Ms Ann Marie Lacey
Director Cavan Institute
Letter from the Director of Adult Education
Thank you for your interest in the program of part time evening courses for 2009/2010 at Cavan Institute. Cavan Institute has evolved over the past year with the opening of a new €7 million campus on Cathedral Road, Cavan, which accommodates state of the art facilities allowing for the expansion of courses within the institute.
Part-time study is a route taken by those who wish to enhance their knowledge or update and develop their skills. Cavan Institute’s, Lifelong Learning Centre offers a broad range of part-time evening courses designed to meet the needs of self-development. The institute is committed to providing opportunities to all groups in society who wish to pursue personal and career development goals.
Courses on offer range from Degree programmes in Business Management and Public Management to ITEC Level 3 Diploma courses to National Certificate programmes provided by FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council), in a variety of disciplines. This is an increasingly popular option for those wishing to obtain certified skills that are nationally and internationally recognised while remaining within the county.
Cavan Institute’s, Lifelong Learning Centre currently registers over 750 students with a considerable influx of students from surrounding counties such as Leitrim, Longford, Fermanagh, Monaghan, and Meath.
The Institute caters for adults who have missed higher education opportunities as well as working adults who are now looking to enhance their career by up-grading their qualifications. The courses on offer provide an opportunity for continuous professional development, while enrolments on other courses are motivated more by personal interest and a desire for self-development. Whatever your motivation, participation in an adult education course increases your confidence and updates your knowledge and skills within your chosen area.
“Research throughout the world has demonstrated the central influence of education on life chances, and in recent years, there has been a growing realisation that education must be lifelong if we are to have an inclusive and democratic society which can adapt successfully to meet new challenges.”
The above quote from the July 2000 Government publication entitled “Learning for Life: White paper on Adult Education” is recognition of the importance of the adult education sector. The School of Lifelong Learning is Cavan Institute’s response to meet the needs of this important sector.
Many courses on offer are certified by FETAC and at the end of each module the student is awarded a Component Certificate. This provides the ideal platform for learners to accumulate Component Certificates and ultimately graduate with a FETAC full award. Students can use their FETAC certification as a means to access, progress and/or transfer to a wide variety of courses throughout the country. Perhaps more relevant to adult learners is the fact that FETAC certification is recognised by employers both nationally and internationally.
Cavan Institute hosts cutting edge technology that is second to none. Among the cutting edge resources available is a state of the art IT environment which consists of over 500 computers and a high-tech MAC lab (with Apple Mac computers for IT and Design), fully equipped Science Lab, Beauty Therapy suite, Hospitality Training Facility (for hotel and catering courses), purpose built Art suite (including photographic dark room), two tiered lecture theatres as well as several classrooms.
These new facilities significantly enhance the academic experience for the students and establish a new standard for learning environments in Cavan. Facilities like these play a key role in one of our biggest challenges – to encourage more people to go back into education. Education is a fundamental cornerstone for growth in Cavan. The availability of this facility will continue to ensure greater student success.
I hope you will find a course that encourages your interest and satisfies your learning requirements. I wish you well with your course selection and look forward to your application.
Ms Margaret Tiernan
Director of Adult Education
