Veterinary assistants provide basic animal care, assist in laboratory procedures and in the veterinary clinic. They may also work in a variety of other settings including animal hospi­tals and clinics, animal shelters, laboratories, zoos and animal parks. Students study a range of subjects designed to prepare them for further study or to work as a veterinary assistant or in animal care. This course in Animal Care is ideal for students wishing to advance to veterinary nursing degrees in Ireland and the UK.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or QQI Level 4 Award. Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.

Further Study

At Cavan Institute: 

Upon successful completion of this programme, graduates may progress to the level 6 Animal Science (Year 2) course at the Institute.


Elsewhere:

Graduates of this course in Animal Care are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular institution regarding local eligi­bility requirements).

Students are given a firm foundation in the skills needed for employment as a Veterinary Assistant or in Animal Care.
