Entry Requirements
This is an entry-level course so no prior knowledge of software development or computer programming is necessary.

The course is suitable for any person with an interest in computer programming, app development, problem solving and a willingness to work. This course may also be of interest to graduates with qualifications in non-computer disciplines who wish to pursue training in the area of software development

Although Leaving Certificate is not required, participants must have reached the statutory school leaving age.

Course Description

This course is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to pursue a career in the vibrant software sector.

Participants will be taught two programming languages - Python and Java. The course provides learners with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills in how to write computer programs to solve a range of common everyday problems.

Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive the Oracle Certified Java Foundations (1Z1-Z11) and the Oracle Certified Java Associate SE 8 Programmer (1Z0-808) Certificates. The course also leads to a full major QQI Level 5 award in Software Development (5M0529) which enables learners to progress with their studies towards a degree and beyond.

As part of this course all students are provided with their own Oracle Student Learning Subscription. This is a 24/7 online learning experience with hands-on labs, specifically designed to help students acquire real-world knowledge and skills that are in high demand in the IT industry. Our expert team of professionally qualified tutors ensure that students are guided through all the necessary learning material, and given regular timely feedback on assessments and project work.

At Cavan Institute: Students who successfully complete this course meet the entry requirements for a range of level 6 courses offered at Cavan Institute, including Software Development (Year 2), Computer Games Development and Computer and Network Technician (Year 2).

Graduates of this course are eligible to apply directly to Cavan Institute to enter Year 1 of the B.Sc. (Level 7 degree) in Computing run in conjunction with Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

Elsewhere: Graduates are also eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular institution regarding local eligibility requirements).
