Laura Kelleher - Multimedia - Student Testimonial
Laura Kelleher - Multimedia - Student Testimonial
Student Name: Laura Kelleher
Course: Multimedia and Web Development

"After completing the Leaving Cert in 2013, unsure of what career path I wanted to pursue, I deferred my CAO offer for a year and chose to take a year to study Multimedia and Web Development in Cavan Institute. I did this for two reasons; one being I always had an interest in working with computers, and by studying this course I would get the chance to learn valuable skills that would benefit me regardless of what career path I found myself on at the end of the year, and thought it would be particularly useful due to the rate at which technology and the use of social media are advancing at present. Secondly, I decided to take a year to study at Cavan Institute, to bridge the gap between leaving secondary school and starting a third level college.
It allowed me to develop my independence and gave me an insight into what to expect when I when I did go on to study at third level, and the amount of work and self-motivation that was necessary. It also showed me the standard and expectations I would be required to meet.
The Multimedia & Web Development course offers a wide range of modules from Image Processing and Film Production to Web Design and Work Experience, it really has something for everyone. It gives you a brilliant insight into the different areas of multimedia and what they involve. The understanding and knowledge I had of the Adobe Suite software, was invaluable to me in my first year at in college, as it meant that I already had a good grasp of what others were only learning about for the first time, which left it more enjoyable and less stressful for me.
The tutors and staff provided an excellent support system and were always there to help me, offering advice and guidance whenever I had any questions or problems, no matter how big or small. I also found that the smaller class sizes were of huge benefit. This meant that not only were the classes tailored to our abilities and interests when possible, we were able to communicate with the tutors directly. We were more than just a number, they took the time to sit down with us and help us if we found something difficult, going through it step-by-step if necessary.
At the end of the year, I decided to do a complete U-turn and change my CAO application form (from Social Studies!) and applied to study the Multimedia course at Dublin City University. I graduated in 2017 and am currently working within the Marketing industry, where no two days are the same!
All of this wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to study at Cavan Institute, where I developed my skills and knowledge of Multimedia, while receiving the support and encouragement of the staff and tutors there."
We wish you continued success in life and your career Laura.

Andrea Pownall - Pre-University Law
Andrea Pownall - Pre-University Law

Student: Andrea Pownall
“My name is Andrea Pownall. I studied Pre-University Law at Cavan Institute for the academic year 17/18. I have always had a keen interest in Law, however, school just wasn’t for me. I ended up leaving secondary school in sixth year and I didn’t complete my Leaving Certificate.
At the time, I thought that I had completely ruined my chances of becoming a solicitor and working in the legal industry. I applied for the Pre-University Law course at Cavan Institute, expecting not to get accepted.
One year later, I am now heading to Maynooth University to study Law and Psychology. I am so thankful to everyone at Cavan Institute for their continued support throughout the whole year. All of the tutors did their absolute best to ensure that I was having an enjoyable and reasonably stress-free experience at Cavan Institute. They motivated me to work hard and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Not only did I learn the key basics of the legal system through classes such as Business Law and Criminal Law, but, I am now more prepared for entering into the university environment. I have learned key essay writing skills; thanks to my Communications class and I know how to complete research for important assignments.
I will forever be grateful to Cavan Institute for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity and skills necessary to go to university. Thank you so much.”

It is great to hear from our past students. We wish you all the best with your studies in Maynooth University Andrea. Dreams really do come true. Keep in touch. Congrats on all your achievements to date.

Student: Sean McGovern
Course: Pre-University Arts in Cultural and Heritage Studies

"After completing my Leaving Cert in 2016 and not getting the results I wished for I was naturally very disappointed, confused and not left with many options having gotten no offers. After weighing up my options I discovered the Pre-University Arts in Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute and decided to apply.

During the duration of the course, I was able to discover a great depth of history of my local area, gain an understanding of the Irish Culture and folklore, make some great friends and lastly experience life in the workplace and job interviews.

During my time in Cavan Institute, I went from being someone who felt like any chance of having a future in education was gone, to someone who is now confident enough to stand up and deliver presentations, I learned how to structure college assignments and various other skills which have stood to me.

Today I am currently in my second year in Tourism Management in Dublin Institute Of Technology (renamed this year as TUD ( Technological University Dublin)) and soon I will start my work placement.

I can't express enough how well the hard work and assistance that my tutors provided along with the course and it's modules that prepared me for my course in Dublin. I am very grateful for the stepping stone that Cavan Institute provided me and highly recommend anyone to explore their great range of courses who may be in a similar position that I was in."

We wish you all the best on your learning journey Sean. Well done and thank you for your contribution.

Mary Kiernan's experience of Cavan Institute.

"I attended Cavan Institute in the 2016/2017 academic year as a full time student on the Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies. I was a mature student, in my fifties, and enjoyed every minute of my time there. I was looking for a career change and this course came highly recommended by a past student.

The course itself was very interesting with a range of modules including Heritage, Appreciation of Irish Culture, Local History, Folklore Studies and also modules that prepared me for going into the workforce. There was a great Communications module involving interview techniques, CV preparation etc. and Word Processing to bring us up to speed on computer skills. We got an opportunity to do Work Experience, which was a great confidence boost. The course also allowed us to do a modern language; I chose French, which I hadn’t done since Leaving Cert, many years earlier.

With over thirteen hundred students it still felt like there was a genuine interest in everyone’s wellbeing and as a mature student I did not feel at all out of place, in fact, it was lovely to be surrounded by young, enthusiastic and energetic people.

The support from tutors was excellent and I always felt I could ask for help when struggling. The Class Tutor of this module is Patrick Cassidy and he is exceptional in his commitment and enthusiasm and his wide range of knowledge. The lectures were fascinating.

With this course, I was able to secure employment in a library where my local history skills are called upon as well as computer skills, communication skills and lots more that I credit to my time in Cavan Institute.

I highly recommend the college and it has so many courses to choose from."

We wish you continued success in your career Mary. Thanks for sharing your story as a student of CI. It is also great to hear from our mature learners.
