Section A - General Queries

Q. HOW DO I APPLY?

On-line applications for the 2017/18 academic year are Open.  Apply Here.  
A valid email address must be used as correspondence may be made via email. Your PPS Number is also required as part of the application process. 

Q WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATION?

28 April 2018 is the closing date for applications for first round offers. However, late applications will be accepted and processed on courses where places are available after this date.


Q WHAT IS THE ENTRY/AGE REQUIREMENT? 

The PLC programme caters for:
  • students who have completed senior cycle education, and require further vocational education and training to enhance their prospects of employment or progression to other studies.
  • Adults returning to education who may not have completed the senior cycle but are deemed by the provider to have the necessary competencies and capacity to undertake the programme.
  • Participants must be at least 16 years of age on commencing the course.
  • Academic entry requirements should be appropriate to the award being offered and may include the Established Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP), Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA), FETAC/QQI Level 4 or equivalent.

Q DO I HAVE TO ATTEND FOR AN INTERVIEW?

There are no interviews held in Cavan Institute for obtaining a place on your course, but all students will be inducted on commencement of their course in September. 

Q I HAVE SPECIAL/ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Download, complete and return the Student Support Form to access@cavaninstitute.ie including all relevant documentation as indicated on this form. Q WHERE CAN I OBTAIN INFORMATION ON ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF MY COURSE AT CAVAN INSTITUTE?

Q HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED? 

You will receive an automated response if you apply online, and by post in all other cases.


Q WHAT ARE THE FEES AND HOW DO I PAY?

Payments are made online. No cash will be accepted. There is a €250 registration fee, €200 Student Contribution PLC Government Levy and €50 QQI exam fee, payable by all students. There are other fees relating to your course so please check the fees relating to your course  on www.cavaninstitute.ie.


Q WHAT IS THE REGISTRATION FEE?

Registrations fee of €250 is payable by all students upon receipt of the conditional offer letter in early June, (refers to applicants who have applied before the closing date in April). Conditional offer letters for remaining places will also be issued throughout the Summer. 

Q ARE THE FEES REFUNDABLE IF I DO NOT COMMENCE A COURSE?


Refunds are made in respect of the registration fee (€250 of the full registration fee is refundable and is returned to the card which you used to pay this fee), plus any other fees paid to Cavan Institute in relation to your course, if you do not take up your place.

Q I HAVE A MEDICAL CARD – WHAT DO I PAY?


Your medical card covers payment of the €200 PLC Government Levy and QQI exam fees of €50 only. It does not cover registration fees, course fees, etc. 

A copy of your medical card should be uploaded to your CI account using your login and password (forwarded to you by email when you applied) or alternatively, scanned to admin@cavaninstitute.ie to obtain this exemption. Registration fees, course fees and other exam fees (check your course details) are paid by all applicants. 


Q I’M UNEMPLOYED, DO I PAY FEES, ARE THERE ANY REDUCTIONS OR EXEMPTIONS?



Registration fees, course fees and other exam fees are payable to Cavan Institute even if you are unemployed. Contact your local Department of Social Protection with regard to funding (BTEA).

If you are 21 or over, in receipt of Social Welfare payment, you may be eligible for Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS). You can download a form here. For more information contact Cavan Adult Education Guidance and Information Service at 049 4377001.

Q ARE PLC COURSES COVERED BY THE GRANT?


Level 5 and 6 courses offered in Cavan Institute are covered by the SUSI grant (subject to eligibility). Applications are made online. Contact Student Universal Support Ireland SUSI - https://www.grantsonline.ie/

Q WHEN IS MY GRANT PAID? 

If the grant application is processed, the 1st instalment is usually paid by the end of October subject to meeting the minimum attendance. 



Q IS MY COURSE FEE REFUNDABLE ON RECEIPT OF GRANT?



Unlike Universities and Institutes of Technology, your grant only covers €200 (PLC Government Levy) of the total of your fees owing to Cavan Institute. Therefore, all payments made in relation to your course are, unfortunately, not refundable upon obtaining the grant.



Q DOES THE GRANT PAY MY REGISTRATION/COURSE FEES?



No.

Q I WANT TO CHANGE MY COURSE CHOICE PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT. WHAT DO I DO? 

Prior to commencement of your course, please contact us by phone 049 4332633 or email admin@cavaninstitute.ie outlining your request to transfer. 

Transfers to a different course may be obtained following commencement of your course subject to numbers etc. In this instance, download and complete a Change of Details Form.

Q I WANT TO CHANGE MY DETAILS. WHAT DO I DO?

Please call our admin office on 049 4332633 or email admin@cavaninstitute.ie in order to update any personal details following your application. 

Q WHEN DO I RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE?

Conditional offer letters, requesting payment of €300 registration fee, will be issued in June and throughout the Summer. 


Q WHEN DO I REGISTER? 


Registration takes place in late August and you will be notified by post/email. Social Welfare, Children's Allowance forms etc will be stamped and signed on this day. 

Q WHERE DO I FIND ACCOMMODATION DETAILS? 

There are many letting agencies in Cavan town and also on the internet. A noticeboard is available in our Cathedral Road campus should you wish to advertise there or look for contact details. You can also post a query on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/studentaccommodationcavan 


Section B - Registered and Attending Students Only

Q LETTERS OF REGISTRATION/ATTENDANCE

Letters of registration/attendance will be issued automatically to all registered students in early September. 

Q STAMPING OF SOCIAL WELFARE/MEDICAL FORMS ETC

Forms requiring official Cavan Institute stamp, will be stamped on registration day, alternatively, the can be posted to the Administrative Office with a stamped addressed envelope. This form will be returned to the name shown within 10 working days. Outside office hours, forms can be left in the box provided outside the Administrative Office. Please include a stamped addressed envelope for return of same. Forms will not be processed without the inclusion of the SAE.

Q WHEN DO I GET MY TIMETABLE? 

Classes are scheduled from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Timetables are available from September (which are subject to change).

Q I HAVE COMPLETED A QQI/FETAC COURSE PREVIOUSLY AND AM EXEMPT FROM SOME MODULES. WHAT DO I DO? 

In relation to prior certifications, you need to contact your class tutor upon commencement of your course to discuss possible exemptions. 


Q WHAT ARE THE OFFICE HOURS FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED AT CAVAN INSTITUTE? 

The office hours are 8.45am – 10.30am and 2.00pm – 3.30pm only. Forms for stamping or signing should be placed in the box outside the Admin office with a stamped self addressed envelope for processing or forwarded by post with a SAE


Q I DID NOT GET MY GRANT, WHAT DO I DO? 

Grant payments are made directly to your bank account by Student Univeral Support Ireland (SUSI) and are attendance based. Queries in relation to attendance should be discussed with your class tutor. 

Q WHEN ARE THE HOLIDAYS? 

The holiday calendar is outlined on the Department of Education & Skills website.

Q IF I'M OUT SICK WHAT DO I DO? 

Contact your class tutor. 

Q WHEN ARE MY ASSIGNMENTS DUE? 

Assessment Schedules will be available for all Students in September. Your tutor will notify you of your assignments. Assignments for tutors must be given to your subject tutor directly.


Q HOW DO I ARRANGE TO SEE THE GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR? 

There is a Drop-In Careers Service available to all students from 10.00am to 12.00noon from Monday to Thursday in Block B, room B005 and B207. No appointment is necessary. This service is for quick queries for up to 15 minutes or alternatively students can email the guidance counsellor on  guidance@cavaninstitute.ie


Q I WANT TO WITHDRAW FROM MY COURSE. WHAT DO I DO? 


You should discuss your intention to withdraw with your class tutor or career guidance counsellor. You need to complete a course withdrawal form, and you can request same by calling into the Admin Office or emailing admin@cavaninstitute.ie. A letter stating you have left the course will be issued on receipt of this completed form together with your student card.


Q WHEN ARE THE FINAL QQI RESULTS AVAILABLE?

Results will be posted end of June to students who have paid all their fees, no results will be given over the phone.

Q WHEN IS GRADUATION?

The Graduation Ceremony will be held on 12 October 2018. Details will be forwarded following the issue of exam results and subject to all outstanding fees owing to Cavan Institute having been paid in full. 

Q HOW DO I ARRANGE TO SEE THE DOCTOR?

The Institute Doctor will visit the Health Centre Thursday from 2.00 to 4.00pm. The Health Centre is located beside Lecture Rm A202. Refer to pages 34-35 of your Student Handbook for further details. Our Facebook page will post any changes to this arrangement.
