About This Course

Speech and Language Therapists support and care for people of all ages with speech, language, communication and feeding, eating and drinking difficulties. Working with other professionals in multidisciplinary teams, the therapist works closely with patients and their families to establish a therapeutic programme to help each patient as part of their recovery journey.

The Pre-University Speech and Language Therapy Assistant course will focus on developing the students understanding of a variety of communication and swallowing disorders and their impact on every aspect of a person’s life. Students can obtain work experience in a variety of healthcare settings for a two-week block. The practical aspects of the course will give students a good understanding of clinical life, and the qualities and characteristics required for a successful career as a Speech and Language Therapist/Assistant.

During their placement, students will develop an understanding of how to engage the patient in self-care activities and examine the components of the Speech and Language therapy process, from assessment through planning, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic programmes.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or QQI Level 4 Award. Consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.

Course Fees
