Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or QQI Level 4 Award. Consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.
Further Study
At Cavan Institute:
Graduates are eligible to progress to the QQI level 6 Social Care with Counselling Skills course available at Cavan Institute.
Elsewhere:
Graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular institution regarding local eligibility requirements). Options to study in the UK are also available.
Career Opportunities

The course will also include workshops in teaching skills and strategies which contribute to supporting communication and speech and language development.
About This Course
Speech and Language Therapists support and care for people of all ages with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties. Working with other professionals in multidisciplinary teams, the therapist works closely with patients and their families to establish a therapeutic programme to help each patient communicate as effectively as possible as part of their recovery journey.
The Speech and Language Therapy Assistant course will focus on developing the students understanding of a variety of communication and swallowing disorders and their impact on every aspect of a person’s life. Students can obtain work experience in a variety of areas, from schools to hospitals and other clinical settings for a two-week block. The practical aspects of the course will give students a good understanding of clinical life, and the qualities and characteristics required for a successful career as a Speech and Language Therapist.
During their placement, students will develop an understanding of how to engage the patient in self-care activities and examine the components of the Speech and Language therapy process, from assessment through planning, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic programmes.
