Have you ever wanted a career where you can make a genuine difference in people's lives every single day? Intellectual Disability Nursing is a deeply rewarding, specialised branch of healthcare that focuses on promoting independence, health, and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities.
If you have been thinking about a degree in nursing but weren't sure how to take that first step, our BSc (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing offers a unique, supportive pathway to help you get there.
A Pioneering Partnership
This programme is designed to widen participation, making third-level education accessible to individuals and communities who might not have traditionally considered the university route.
It is a unique collaboration between Cavan Institute and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). You get the best of both worlds:
Year 1 (Local): You spend your first year right here at Cavan Institute, completing your QQI Level 5 Nursing Studies. This gives you a gentle, supported start to your degree journey in a familiar, local environment.
Years 2–5 (DkIT): Upon successful completion of Year 1, you progress directly to DkIT to complete your four-year BSc (Hons) degree.
Why Choose This Path?
We know that starting a degree is a big commitment, so we’ve built in extra supports to help you succeed:
Additional Academic Support: Throughout your first year, you will receive extra guidance in mathematics, ICT, and study skills to ensure you are fully prepared and confident for your move to DkIT.
Hands-on Experience: The course includes a clinical placement in an intellectual disability setting (between 72 and 150 hours), giving you real-world experience early on.
Expert Modules: Your studies cover everything from Anatomy & Physiology and Nursing Theory & Practice to Understanding Mental Health and Human Growth & Development.
Is This Course for You?
We welcome a diverse range of students, including school leavers, mature applicants (aged 23 or over), and those with relevant QQI Level 4 awards. Because we want to ensure this programme is the right fit for your future, all applicants are invited to an interview as part of the application process.
Affordable, Accessible Education
At Cavan Institute, we believe quality education should be within reach for everyone. Our course fees are a straightforward €200 in total (with a further reduction for medical card holders), with no hidden costs.
