Keep Your Cool: Study Tips to De-Stress and Prioritise

With the Leaving Cert starting on Wednesday, June 3rd, we are officially in the "home stretch." We know the pressure is ramping up, but the next few weeks don't have to be a blur of stress.

The secret to finishing strong isn't just about working harder; it’s about working smarter and taking care of yourself. Here is our study tips for staying grounded while you get the work done.

1. Prioritise with the "Big Rock" Method

Not all chapters are created equal. If you try to learn everything at once, you’ll likely remember nothing.

  • Check the Trends: Look at past papers. Which topics appear every single year? These are your "Big Rocks." Secure these first before moving on to the smaller, less frequent topics.

  • Eat the Frog: Start your day with the subject you find the hardest. Once it's out of the way, your stress levels will drop, and everything else will feel easier.

2. The Pomodoro Technique (Work with Your Brain)

Your brain isn't built to focus for four hours straight. To avoid burnout, try the 25/5 rule:

  • Study intensely for 25 minutes (no phone, no distractions).

  • Take a 5-minute break (get up, stretch, grab water).

  • Every four "Pomodoros," take a longer 20-minute break. This keeps your concentration sharp and prevents that mid-afternoon brain fog.

3. De-Stress: The "Off Switch" is Essential

You might feel guilty for not studying, but resting is actually part of the job.

  • Change Your Environment: If you’ve been at your desk for hours, go for a 15-minute walk. The change in scenery and fresh air helps reset your nervous system.

  • The Power of Sleep: Your brain processes and stores what you learned during the day while you sleep. Pulling all-nighters actually makes it harder to remember information during the exam.

  • Put the Phone Down: Scrolling through social media during your breaks doesn't count as rest—it actually keeps your brain stimulated. Try a real "digital detox" in the hour before you go to bed.

4. Secure Your Peace of Mind - Study Tips

One of the biggest stressors is the "What If?" factor. What if I don't get the points? What if I'm not ready for university?

Eliminate that stress by securing your Cavan Institute place now. Because we offer direct entry and don't rely on the points system, having your offer letter in your hand before 3rd June takes a massive weight off your shoulders. You can walk into the exam hall knowing that your future is already sorted.
