Siobhan O’Reilly from Crosserlough, Co Cavan completed the QQI Level 5 Occupational Therapy Studies course at Cavan Institute in 2019/20. She completed her LC in St. Clare’s College, Ballyjamesduff and decided to progress her studies at Cavan Institute in an effort to take the first step in becoming and Occupational Therapist. After successfully completing her course she used her QQI Level 5 award and applied through UCAS (UK based organisation whose main role is to operate the application process for British Universities) for the Masters in Occupational Therapy at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen and was offered a place on the programme. Siobhan says that “during my year at Cavan Institute studying Occupational Therapy Studies, I made so many new friends both in my course and in other courses. The atmosphere was always very pleasant and welcoming. I found the subjects fascinating in my course and really enjoyed learning what occupational therapy is and the many ways in which occupational therapists help people to recover and live with their congenital or acquired injuries. As a result of completing this course at Cavan Institute I am now heading to Aberdeen and to get my Masters in Occupational Therapy. It was always my goal to get my masters and being able to do so within 4 years is ideal! Unfortunately, my course will be online for the first semester but I am still moving over to student accommodation and there will be loads of opportunities to meet people in my course and on the university football team. I feel more than prepared for this high-intensity and professional course as a result of the work I did in CI and the assignments given by the tutors. They were very practical assignments and really gave me a feel for the work I will be doing in the future.” Siobhan O’Reilly Pre-University Occupational Therapy Assistant Siobhan O’Reilly Pre-University Occupational Therapy Assistant Student testimonials Previous Next

- Eli Mellor | Cavan Institute
Eli from Lough Gowna, Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Sports Therapy /Physiotherapy Studies at Cavan Institute and progressed to study Physiotherapy in Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, Holland. "Without Cavan Institute, I doubt that I would be in the position that I am in today. I knew that I would not get the points needed in the Leaving Cert to do a Physiotherapy Course in Ireland, so I used Cavan Institute as a stepping stone to get into a University abroad. The course itself in Cavan Institute is filled with interesting topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Injury Treatment and Prevention, Nutrition and Taping and Strapping. The knowledge that I attained in this course gave me a great start to University. I had a good foundation in the basics of Physiotherapy. Outside of the course, the college is perfect for educating people on how to prepare for life in University by allowing them to take on a more responsible role in their education. This includes completing assignments, practising self-study and meeting deadlines. If progressing into physiotherapy is not for you, there are still opportunities available to work within the sports sector. Before I started my physiotherapy degree, I gained knowledge during the Summer of 2018 by working with various football and soccer teams as a sports physio throughout the Cavan-Leitrim region, but mainly with Gowna GAA. It allowed me to develop my skills in taping and strapping, performing sports massage and using first aid as well. All of these skills are very desirable in the world of sport. My two years in Cavan Institute have allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a Physiotherapist and for that, I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute for anyone who wants to do Physiotherapy or become a Sports Physio." - Philip McKeon | Cavan Institute
Philip from Aughnacliffe, Co Longford attended Moyne Community School and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Architectural Technology course in May 2019. Philip decided to continue his studies at Cavan Institute and enrolled on the Level 6 Renewable and Engineering Technology course. "When I finished my leaving cert I went straight to college in Galway and realised that the high numbers in lectures and the intense nature of college wasn’t suited to me. I then made the decision to leave and join a course in Cavan Institute which was closer to home and also provided me with far more tuition than any IT or university could ever provide. I always had a keen interest in the built environment and CAD so I decided to do Architectural Technology Level 5. The skills and work that I completed felt like they were way out of my depth before I started but through a lot of 1 on 1 guidance with tutors and also making themselves available for any questions whether through email or phone, I found that this was the best experience I could have had post leaving cert. In the space of a year I managed to complete modules containing AutoCAD, Revit and Photoshop while also completing standard modules such as communications and maths. After year one, I decided to branch off and study Renewable and Engineering Technology. This course was brilliant for me as it was a three day a week course. The course left the opportunity for work experience which I believe is the best way to learn an industry or trade. I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anyone, whether if you are not sure what you want to do or if you’re interested in a pre university course, the guidance of the tutors and opportunities such as work experience in my case led to a job. I would like to thanks my tutors, Shane McCabe and Stacey Gardiner as they were very helpful throughout my time in Cavan Institute and has paved my way from school to the working life." - Imani Tutu | Cavan Institute
Imani from Cavan town enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law course at Cavan Institute in September 2016. After successfully completing the course, he was offered a place in BCL (Hons) in UCC. "I was just completing my QQI level 4 award, ESOL programme (English for Speakers of Other Languages) 2015-2016. After completing that programme I did not know what was my next step, things like what course, what college were occurring in my head. Then I heard that Cavan Institute were holding an Open Day for the academic year 2016-2017. Without hesitation I attended. As I have always been interested in legal and political matters, I brightly foresaw my future after attending Cavan Institute's open day and then I realised that Cavan Institute offers a legal studies course (Pre-University Law) QQI level 5, I did not think twice. This course (Pre-University law) in Cavan Institute provided me a foundation knowledge of Irish law and Irish legal systems. During my time spent in Cavan Institute, I had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus Plus Programme (Erasmus plus programme allows student to undertake a work placement abroad). Cavan Institute and the Pre-University law course provided a great qualification which allowed me to secure a place in BCL (Hons) in the University College Course (UCC). Our tutors were very friendly and they were always willing to help. In Cavan Institute all student are treated equally no matter their backgrounds, race or gender. The students’ nights out were amazing, just wow…. If there were a level 8-degree course I would love to stay there for few more years. - Eamonn Cahill | Cavan Institute
Eamonn from Lisduff, Virginia, Co Cavan studied year 1 and 2 of the Multimedia and Web Development course at Cavan Institute. "I began my studies in Multimedia at Cavan Institute in 2007, not really knowing what it was I wanted to do career-wise. I knew I had a keen interest in computers and art, but I didn’t feel confident enough to pursue these interests further in employment after leaving school. Studying at Cavan Institute, I was able to explore the wider multimedia industry - learning my craft in graphic design, animation and web design - while still being able to pursue my main interest in video production. Working together with other motivated classmates and tutors, I learned first-hand how to work in a team on creative projects and got my first sense of working in the professional industry through work placements provided by the college. It was here that I first began to develop a great network of creative professionals and lifelong friends that I still often work with to this day. It was also at Cavan Institute that I developed a good understanding of the creative process and learned many of the tools and software that I use today in much of my work. Since my time studying Multimedia at Cavan Institute from 2007 - 2009, I went on to study for a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology – with a strong head start given to me by my studies at Cavan Institute. I then followed this with studies for an MA in Creative Media Practices at Filmbase (University of West Scotland), which included my role as Head Of Post Production & Editor on the Filmbase feature film Fading Away (2015). My time at Cavan Institute had given me a unique set of skills on which to draw on during my time here – not many video editors can claim to have experience in graphic design, animation, web design AND video production. I have since been kept busy with my freelance editor/videographer work on various productions. I have been involved in promotional work for the likes of Dublin City Council, Mountain Moot Scouting, Rogue Nation and Sky - Worked on postproduction for short films such as Late Check-Out (2015), The Legend of Fritzy & Geraldine (2016), Man To Man (2017) and The Emerald Stone (Currently in Post) – Produced video content for monthly live music event The Friday Night Platform for use online – As well as produced various music videos for artists such as Aine Cahill, Paul McCann, JJ Jupiter and Ivan McCabe. I most recently completed work as assembly editor on the new hidden camera show Senior Moments for RTE - And I am currently in post on a short documentary about independent Irish film as part of my MA studies." - Emma Carolan | Cavan Institute
"I choose Cavan Institute because it was convenient to me and I had heard good reports about the college and tutors. During my second year at Cavan Institute, studying Early Childhood Care and Education Year 2 , I received great assistance and support from my tutors. Work experience was very beneficial to me as it allowed me to gain an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers. I also learned about the day to day running of a childcare setting. As a result of my work experience, I have been given a full-time position in my work placement childcare setting. I developed skills in assignment presentation as well as communication skills. Cavan Institute is a great learning environment, but there is also a good social aspect of it. There were numerous days in which events were arranged for us to attend e.g. Mental Health Awareness, Well Being etc." We wish you all the best in your career Emma and thanks for sharing your story with us.
