- Shane Bell | Cavan Institute
Shane is from Ballybofey, Co Donegal. Shane studied Applied Science - Forensics at Cavan Institute. "After receiving my leaving certificate results in 2019, I was very disappointed. I had enough points for the course I wanted to do in the LYIT but I had failed Maths. I decided to do a level 5 QQI course in forensic science at Cavan Institute. Little did I know that a PLC (Post Leaving Cert) course was the best thing for me at that time. I made a lot of new friends along the way. When I went to Cavan Institute I had some information about forensics but not a lot. So that was a bit of a worry for me, but with help, I gradually learned more and more about forensics and science in general. When I was studying at Cavan Institute, I learned many important skills like getting used to Moodle and Teams. Learning to reference assignments properly was a huge asset. All universities and IoT's insist on academically referenced assignments so I will be confident starting college with this knowledge. I also got to do work experience in a laboratory in Donegal. It was in a creamery called Green Pastures. This was a big help as I learned things that I could use in the future. I got involved in many things while I was studying at Cavan Institute like the Open Days and when the 6th class students came in for science week. I was also involved in soccer for Cavan Institute. In March when Cavan Institute was closed because of Covid-19, we adjusted our learning to an online experience. I had to work hard as I really wanted to get an offer from LYIT. I was determined to get an offer so I worked hard from September. I was delighted when I received a Round 1 CAO offer from LYIT as I got accepted from my QQI grades that I received in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Digital and Security Forensics at Letterkenny Institute of Technology My advice for you is if you're not happy with your leaving cert results or you don't get an offer, don't panic, there are other routes. A PLC course could be the best option for you. With a PLC course, you get to enjoy what you are doing, you also get a certificate at the end of the year and if you work hard enough you can get an offer from the CAO for the college you want to study at. Finally, the best thing for me was, I got to meet new people and made great friends on my course." - Mark McDermott | Cavan Institute
Mark McDermott from Killygarry, Cavan began his Engineering Technology studies with us in September 2022. After successfully completing his QQI Level 5 award with 8 distinctions, Mark secured a round zero offer on 3 August 2023 for a level 8 degree in Mechanical Engineering at TUD. Mark secured a sports scholarship while studying at Cavan Institute. "Before going to Cavan Institute I was unaware of the opportunities that were available to me. I had thoughts of entering an Engineering course but was unsure if it was right for me. Cavan Institute had Level 5 Engineering Technology course that I really liked the sound of. My plan was to do a one-year course and gain my qualification. Cavan Institute provided me with a great insight into the engineering world. In my year of study on this course, many topics were covered to help confirm my interest in engineering. I had various modules throughout the year that helped me gain confidence and knowledge in engineering subjects I had not studied previously. Previously I had no experience of the engineering workshop processes module. It was a great introduction to using new tools and technologies. My favourite module was Auto-Cad (Computer Aided Draughting 2D) as it was great to learn a new software from scratch, I know it will be very useful to me in my future studies and work. There are great work experience opportunities. I spent 10 days at ATA Group Cavan. I found working in a successful company was a great help in understanding how qualified engineers work from day to day. In my year at Cavan Institute, I played football. I was delighted to have the opportunity to play for another team and compete against other colleges and universities in Ireland. I was fortunate to gain a sports scholarship. I also must give a big thanks to all my tutors. They were more than helpful throughout my year. They were very understanding and supportive. They made sure each assignment was completed to a very high standard. I had great support from the Career Guidance team. Aoife Ward helped me become aware of the many opportunities of progression there was from this Engineering Technology course." Best of luck with your future studies and career! - Progression | Cavan Institute | Cavan, Ireland
Round Zero students include QQI applicants for limited-place courses like Nursing, Social Care, Law & more—guided by quality assurance principles. Progression Round Zero Progression Round Zero offers came out on 8 August 2020. Students who fall into the Round Zero category include applicants who are presenting QQI qualifications for courses that have a limited number of places available for these students. These include Nursing, Social Care, Veterinary Nursing, Commerce and Law, to name just a few. We have had many students in Cavan Institute gain access to Higher Education this year using this option. Many courses have an entry route for applicants presenting QQI/FET, but do not have a specific quota. These courses will be offering places in Round One on 11 September 2020. We wish all our students the very best of luck in securing an offer and progressing with their education. National Framework of Qualifications Established in 2003, the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) is a 10-level, single national entity through which all learning achievements may be measured and related to each other. Underpinned by quality assurance principles, the Irish NFQ describes qualifications in the Irish education and training system and sets out what each qualification says about what learners know, understand and are able to do. It also sets out qualifications pathways from one NFQ level to the next. Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is responsible for developing, promoting and maintaining the Irish NFQ. QQI also facilitates the recognition of foreign qualifications. - Paul McArdle | Cavan Institute
Paul from Cootehill, Co Cavan attended Beech Hill College, Monaghan. "I came to Cavan Institute in September 2016 to do the Nursing Studies course with the intention of trying to get to adult nursing in Dublin. I had left school at 15 without any education. After only two months at Cavan Institute I discovered it was possible to study adult nursing in the UK. I then applied for some universities in London and also in Dublin. With the results I gained at Cavan institute I was offered two universities in London and also Trinity College Dublin. I am 100 percent certain I would not be at London South Bank University today without having attended Cavan Institute last year. I am at present half way through my first year and doing my placements at one of the bigger hospitals in the centre of London. Doing the nursing studies course was the perfect stepping stone for my first year at London South Bank University. The first year at university is very similar to the year I had at Cavan Institute. I found all the Cavan Institute lecturers in the nursing studies course very helpful and they work tirelessly to help students gain places at different universities. This varies from helping with personal statements or advice on nursing matters as all the lecturers at Cavan Institute are fully experienced nurses with different nursing backgrounds. The nursing studies course is designed perfectly in all modules to help the nursing student progress to the next academic level. Also while at Cavan institute I was chairperson of the students committee. I found this a great way of meeting other students studying in other disciplines. Once again, I am very grateful to everyone at Cavan Institute for giving me the opportunity that I have now in front of me in the UK and my future career as a nurse."
