  • Abigail Brennan | Cavan Institute

Abigail Brennan joined us in September 2021. She is from Longford and tells her story here. "In 2021, I was unsure of what career path to follow. After researching many courses, I decided on the Office Administration and Technology course at Cavan Institute. It has a range of both practical and theoretical modules, with good employment and progression opportunities. Travel to the college was convenient for me and the fees were low. The course has more than met my expectations and has been enjoyable, rewarding and confidence boosting. The teachers are all, without exception, enthusiastic, encouraging, helpful, supportive and positive. Work experience is a key element of the course, and we were required to find a ten-day placement. I had no experience of office work and was unsure of how to find a placement that would be beneficial, suitable and enjoyable for me. My work experience teacher gave me advice on job finding, CV preparation and interview skills as well as the contact details of local employers who were, at that time, offering placements to suitable candidates. This gave me the confidence to apply for and secure a part time receptionist’s job at the Cavan Crystal Hotel. This I have been able to do at weekends whilst I complete my course. A collaborative approach to learning is encouraged and, as a result, our class group were really friendly and sociable both online and on site. It was a very effective way to work and learn and it helped us all progress very well. There was a good mix of students with some who had just left school, mature students and both male and female in the class. It meant we mixed with people of different ages and backgrounds and nationalities. We forged great friendships and made time for tea breaks and laughter along the way. Under the guidance of our tutor, we became a connected and inclusive group. My advice is if you are unsure of what career path to follow the Office Administration and Technology course is a great place to start as the skills learned are useful no matter what area of work you eventually decide to enter." • Devorca McCann | Cavan Institute

Devorca from Cavan town, completed QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law and QQI Level 6 Administration and IT for Business at Cavan Institute. "I studied level 5 pre-university law and level 6 administration and IT skills. I chose to do the pre-university law course in Cavan Institute. It provided me with a great insight into the Irish law system. It provided me with practical skills that are required in the work place. As part of both courses, one mandatory subject was work experience. I believe that if I had not completed my work experience in a solicitor's office, I wouldn't be where I am today. The work experience gave me great knowledge on how a legal office works. I was also trained up on the software which is used in many legal offices. I am now working in a solicitor's office, being trained as a legal secretary. My courses in Cavan Institute gave me a great insight and has helped me in many ways. I now have the opportunity to become a qualified legal secretary. I can progress to a level 7 Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice in Griffith College." After successfully completing the course, she used her QQI Level 5 to apply through CAO and was offered her first choice, the BSc (Hons) in Health and Physical Activity at Dundalk Institute of Technology. The encouragement I received from my lecturers was excellent. As a result of this, I qualified as a pool lifeguard and received numerous coaching and gym qualifications. From completing the Sports Coaching and Leisure Management course it allowed me to build my confidence and communication skills as I presented numerous coaching classes and class presentations in front of my classmates. The encouragement and enthusiasm I received throughout the entire year allowed me to achieve excellent grades and the student of the year award. Cavan Institute provides a broad range of courses and I would highly recommend it to students unsure of their future studies as it is a great indicator to gain more knowledge of the course you may wish to complete in an Institute of Technology or University. During my time at Cavan Institute, I played alongside very skilled girls on the Gaelic football team, as a result of the talent we reached the semi-final stages. I would also like to thank Bryan Bates and Shane McCabe for coaching us throughout the year helping us to achieve this and selecting me as ladies footballer of the year. I had the privilege of being chosen to travel to Torquay in England on an Erasmus trip which allowed me to learn more about leisure facilities and the fitness sector in general. I would like to thank Dawn Graham for making the Erasmus trip possible. Without the people mentioned above, my experience would not have been the same and I will forever be grateful." • Laura McClay | Cavan Institute

Laura McClay from Donegal studied Psychology & Social Science Level 5 in Cavan Institute and received a Round Zero offer for BSc in Psychology in University of Limerick. Laura tells us about her experience in Cavan Institute: “After not getting the high points needed for psychology in the leaving cert, I was very disappointed and unsure of my future. Following some research, I discovered that a PLC could help me get into college. I chose Cavan Institute in particular as I felt it would give me the best chance and I liked the sound of the modules. Having never properly been to Cavan, I was extremely nervous about my decision. However, I can now say that the decision to study here was the best one I could have made. Studying in Cavan Institute gave me the chance to experience living away from home for the first time. I gained independence and confidence. I always looked forward to the social aspect of college and I’ve made incredible friends along the way that I will definitely stay in contact with. On top of that, I also gained invaluable knowledge on research, IT, and the structuring of professional writing. The modules I studied solidified that psychology was the right path for me, and I learned many things that I will bring forward with me when I continue my studies. While the assignments were sometimes stressful, the tutors at Cavan Institute were always friendly and caring, and it’s clear that they put in great effort towards the success of their students. No matter the problem or query, there was always someone willing to help. As well as that, our tutors were always willing to have a laugh with us which kept our classes fun and made learning more interesting for us all. With the help of guidance counsellors Aoife and Orla, I reapplied to CAO as well as UCAS. I was lucky this time around to be offered my preferred choice which is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick. I received this offer in the Round Zero for QQI applicants which would not have been possible without completing the Level 5 at Cavan Institute. My year at Cavan institute was unforgettable and has been nothing but beneficial in terms of preparing me for university. “ We wish Laura the very best of luck with the rest of her studies.
