  • Áine McGovern | Cavan Institute

Áine from Ardvaugh, Glangevlin, Co Cavan enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Sports Coaching and Leisure Management at Cavan Institute in September 2019. After successfully completing the course, she used her QQI Level 5 to apply through CAO and was offered her first choice, the BSc (Hons) in Health and Physical Activity at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Áine commented that "my time at Cavan Institute was very enjoyable and beneficial, from attending the college not alone did I receive outstanding help from my tutors but I also grew a bond with them as they treated everyone equally. The encouragement I received from my lecturers was excellent. As a result of this, I qualified as a pool lifeguard and received numerous coaching and gym qualifications. From completing the Sports Coaching and Leisure Management course it allowed me to build my confidence and communication skills as I presented numerous coaching classes and class presentations in front of my classmates. The help I received while carrying out my assignments has prepared me for attending Dundalk Institute of Technology in 2020/21. I would like to thank my two main tutors Bryan Bates and Mary McEnroe for making my experience at Cavan Institute unforgettable. The encouragement and enthusiasm I received throughout the entire year allowed me to achieve excellent grades and the student of the year award. My course enabled me to enhance my knowledge of nutrition, coaching techniques and the different functions of the human body. Attending Cavan Institute was one of my most enjoyable years as I met many inspirational people and some lifelong friends. Cavan Institute provides a broad range of courses and I would highly recommend it to students unsure of their future studies as it is a great indicator to gain more knowledge of the course you may wish to complete in an Institute of Technology or University. During my time at Cavan Institute, I played alongside very skilled girls on the Gaelic football team, as a result of the talent we reached the semi-final stages. I would also like to thank Bryan Bates and Shane McCabe for coaching us throughout the year helping us to achieve this and selecting me as ladies footballer of the year. I had the privilege of being chosen to travel to Torquay in England on an Erasmus trip which allowed me to learn more about leisure facilities and the fitness sector in general. I would like to thank Dawn Graham for making the Erasmus trip possible. Without the people mentioned above, my experience would not have been the same and I will forever be grateful." • Jarlath Gaffney | Cavan Institute

Jarlath from Derrycramph, Cavan attended St Patrick's College, Cavan. Jarlath studied QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law in Cavan Institute and progressed to IT Carlow to study Honours Bachelor of Laws LLB degree. "Having completed my leaving cert I was unsure of what I wanted to study at higher education however I always had a keen interest in law and current affairs. I had been offered an arts with history degree in NUIG but I did not feel ready to leave home at that time. I choose to study the pre university law programme in Cavan Institute and it provided me with a foundation insight into the Irish legal system in both civil and criminal proceedings. I would greatly recommend students who have just completed their leaving certs to complete a QQI/FETAC course before you progress to higher education because it provides students with the practical skills required in the modern workplace through the completion of the work experience programme. The modules in this course include law modules such as business law and criminal law as well as business based subjects such as business administration skills. There is a wide variety of arts, business, law, theology or social science degrees of which this course can be used as a progression route to. Tutors in Cavan Institute are supportive and cooperative with their students. I have now started the Honours Bachelor of Laws LLB degree this year in IT Carlow and I know the help and support I received from Cavan Institute will be of tremendous benefit to me both academically and socially." • Laura McClay | Cavan Institute

Laura McClay from Donegal studied Psychology & Social Science Level 5 in Cavan Institute and received a Round Zero offer for BSc in Psychology in University of Limerick. Laura tells us about her experience in Cavan Institute: “After not getting the high points needed for psychology in the leaving cert, I was very disappointed and unsure of my future. Following some research, I discovered that a PLC could help me get into college. I chose Cavan Institute in particular as I felt it would give me the best chance and I liked the sound of the modules. Having never properly been to Cavan, I was extremely nervous about my decision. However, I can now say that the decision to study here was the best one I could have made. Studying in Cavan Institute gave me the chance to experience living away from home for the first time. I gained independence and confidence. I always looked forward to the social aspect of college and I’ve made incredible friends along the way that I will definitely stay in contact with. On top of that, I also gained invaluable knowledge on research, IT, and the structuring of professional writing. The modules I studied solidified that psychology was the right path for me, and I learned many things that I will bring forward with me when I continue my studies. While the assignments were sometimes stressful, the tutors at Cavan Institute were always friendly and caring, and it’s clear that they put in great effort towards the success of their students. No matter the problem or query, there was always someone willing to help. As well as that, our tutors were always willing to have a laugh with us which kept our classes fun and made learning more interesting for us all. With the help of guidance counsellors Aoife and Orla, I reapplied to CAO as well as UCAS. I was lucky this time around to be offered my preferred choice which is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick. I received this offer in the Round Zero for QQI applicants which would not have been possible without completing the Level 5 at Cavan Institute. My year at Cavan institute was unforgettable and has been nothing but beneficial in terms of preparing me for university. “ We wish Laura the very best of luck with the rest of her studies. • Martina O'Reilly | Cavan Institute

Martina from Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Accounting Technician - Computerised Accounting course at Cavan Institute. "At the end of my maternity leave I was due to return to work as a care assistant. I was now a mother to four children and I wanted more for my future. I decided to look into returning to education and on my 35th birthday made the big decision to apply to Cavan Institute for the two year Accounting Technician course and shortly afterwards I received the acceptance letter. I experienced so many emotions over the coming weeks. I was excited about the new challenge but I was also petrified of the new beginning. I felt I had got a second chance and I promised myself I would give it my all. I knew my biggest challenge would be juggling my family and college life but looking back there was no need to worry. The support I received from my classmates was fantastic, but the support I received from the Accounting Technician tutors was outstanding. It went above and beyond my expectations. I cannot thank them enough. At the end of May 2016 I had passed all my exams with Distinction. Three years on from that big decision and I'm working in an accounts office in Bernard Reilly Plant Hire Ltd in Cavan, putting all the skills and knowledge I learned during my time in Cavan Institute into practice. I am continuing my studies online through Cenit College and preparing to sit my first CPA exam. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Institute and looking back it was a very positive and life changing experience. I would highly recommend the Accounting Technician at Cavan institute especially for the mature student."
