  • Martina O'Reilly | Cavan Institute

Martina from Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Accounting Technician - Computerised Accounting course at Cavan Institute. "At the end of my maternity leave I was due to return to work as a care assistant. I was now a mother to four children and I wanted more for my future. I decided to look into returning to education and on my 35th birthday made the big decision to apply to Cavan Institute for the two year Accounting Technician course and shortly afterwards I received the acceptance letter. I experienced so many emotions over the coming weeks. I was excited about the new challenge but I was also petrified of the new beginning. I felt I had got a second chance and I promised myself I would give it my all. I knew my biggest challenge would be juggling my family and college life but looking back there was no need to worry. The support I received from my classmates was fantastic, but the support I received from the Accounting Technician tutors was outstanding. It went above and beyond my expectations. I cannot thank them enough. At the end of May 2016 I had passed all my exams with Distinction. Three years on from that big decision and I'm working in an accounts office in Bernard Reilly Plant Hire Ltd in Cavan, putting all the skills and knowledge I learned during my time in Cavan Institute into practice. I am continuing my studies online through Cenit College and preparing to sit my first CPA exam. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Institute and looking back it was a very positive and life changing experience. I would highly recommend the Accounting Technician at Cavan institute especially for the mature student." • Melanie Moran Flood | Cavan Institute

"I attended Cavan institute for two years, studying Sports Coaching and Development. It's safe to say that Cavan institute has prepared me for University as I was not ready for college after I finished my Leaving Cert. Throughout the two years in Cavan Institute, I have made lifelong friends and it has set me up for my life ahead. I am now going on to study Sports Studies with Physical Education in the University of Cork, which I couldn’t have done without my tutors' help and preparation. I can't thank everyone enough in Cavan Institute for their efforts and help to get me this far in my journey. I would highly recommend Cavan Instititue for anyone who is still indecisive about college after doing their leaving cert, just like I was. They have many courses to offer and excellent facilities to take advantage of. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to attend Cavan Institute Melanie Moran Flood Sport and Fitness Instruction Melanie Moran Flood Sport and Fitness Instruction Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Shane Bell | Cavan Institute

Shane is from Ballybofey, Co Donegal. Shane studied Applied Science - Forensics at Cavan Institute. "After receiving my leaving certificate results in 2019, I was very disappointed. I had enough points for the course I wanted to do in the LYIT but I had failed Maths. I decided to do a level 5 QQI course in forensic science at Cavan Institute. Little did I know that a PLC (Post Leaving Cert) course was the best thing for me at that time. I made a lot of new friends along the way. When I went to Cavan Institute I had some information about forensics but not a lot. So that was a bit of a worry for me, but with help, I gradually learned more and more about forensics and science in general. When I was studying at Cavan Institute, I learned many important skills like getting used to Moodle and Teams. Learning to reference assignments properly was a huge asset. All universities and IoT's insist on academically referenced assignments so I will be confident starting college with this knowledge. I also got to do work experience in a laboratory in Donegal. It was in a creamery called Green Pastures. This was a big help as I learned things that I could use in the future. I got involved in many things while I was studying at Cavan Institute like the Open Days and when the 6th class students came in for science week. I was also involved in soccer for Cavan Institute. In March when Cavan Institute was closed because of Covid-19, we adjusted our learning to an online experience. I had to work hard as I really wanted to get an offer from LYIT. I was determined to get an offer so I worked hard from September. I was delighted when I received a Round 1 CAO offer from LYIT as I got accepted from my QQI grades that I received in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Digital and Security Forensics at Letterkenny Institute of Technology My advice for you is if you're not happy with your leaving cert results or you don't get an offer, don't panic, there are other routes. A PLC course could be the best option for you. With a PLC course, you get to enjoy what you are doing, you also get a certificate at the end of the year and if you work hard enough you can get an offer from the CAO for the college you want to study at. Finally, the best thing for me was, I got to meet new people and made great friends on my course."
