  • Year-End Celebrations: Pre-University Primary and Post Primary Teaching

The first cohort of students on the Pre-University Primary and Post-Primary Teaching course had a year-end get-together organised by class tutor, Margaret Tiernan. This event marked a hugely successful first run of this course and acknowledged the efforts of both students and teachers alike throughout the year. Margaret was joined by students, subject tutors Finola, Bryan and Michelle, who taught on the course, as well as school head, Bridget McGibney, and deputy director, Louise Clarke. Among the students are future primary teachers and post-primary teachers, including PE teachers and teachers of Home Economics, Agricultural Science and English. All the students have clear pathways mapped out and colleges identified to which they hope to progress. Career guidance and one-to-one mentorship was the USP of this course and it's clear the students are ready to take the next step, confident in their future as aspiring teachers. This was an exceptional class of young future teachers, and Cavan Institute looks forward to welcoming and training the next class of future teachers from September 2023. Applications are now open for this course.

  • CI Students Work in Sunny Seville thanks to Erasmus+

The Erasmus+ programme, which enables our students to secure a two-week vocationally orientated work placement abroad, is back up and running at Cavan Institute after its two-year hibernation owing to the pandemic. Seven students from the Tourism with Business and Culture and Heritage Studies courses landed in Seville on Saturday 4 March. As beginners' Spanish is on the curriculum of both courses, all are staying with host families in order to fully embrace the culture and improve their language skills. Three students secured work placements at the 5* EME Catedral Mercer Hotel, located in the heart of the city in front of the Giralda and the Cathedral of Seville. Vanessa, Anna and Nelly are working on reception, gaining hands-on skills in welcoming and checking in guests, and dealing with all of the issues typical of a busy front desk. “Everyone is like family here,” said Vanessa, “and they’re treating us so well, ensuring we get a chance to learn as many new skills as possible”. The front desk manager, Luis, was very complementary of the students’ work ethic, saying it was a pleasure to have them on placement. Cavan Institute is extremely grateful to Luis and his team at the EME Mercer Hotel for the excellent opportunities afforded to our students, and to Asun at Praktika Training and Consulting for securing these prestigious placements. More students from the Institute arrived in Seville on Saturday 11 March, and we look forward to sharing details of their placements and experience in another post. Cavan Institute is indebted to the support it receives from Léargas, the Irish National Agency with responsibility for managing funds on behalf of the EU's Erasmus+ and other programmes.

  • Major Reduction in Course Fees

As part of a plan to tackle the rising cost of living and make learning more accessible for all, Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) has announced a significant reduction to fees on full time courses for the new academic year. All Cavan Institute course fees have been reduced to a maximum of €200 per learner per year. Further reductions apply to applicants who are in receipt of a benefit (e.g. Medical Card/Social Welfare Payment) where the fee will be just €150. This announcement marks a great opportunity for students to embark on courses at a significantly reduced cost where all course materials, exam fees, toolkits and uniforms are now included in the yearly fee. CMETB will be processing refunds to learners who have already applied and paid in excess of €200 for the incoming academic year, ensuring the cost savings are passed on to every learner. Students can expect to save up to €1300 on certain courses. For example; a learner enrolling on the Level 5 Hairdressing course will now pay €200 where previously course fees were approx. €1,000. Nursing Studies which previously cost €420 will now cost €200. For the Pre-University Education and Teaching course which would normally cost €330, students will save €130. Explore Courses Now
