Course Fees


The Applied Social Studies course allows students the opportunity to study the impact of society on how we interact, behave and relate as people. It looks at key topics such as culture, racism, addiction and mental health. The course involves a combination of academic and practical skills. It enables the learners to develop key skills in caring for others and themselves while fostering the ability to think critically and in a less judgemental way.  The course also provides students with the opportunity to progress to level 6 and level 8 courses in different colleges and universities.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or QQI Level 4 Award. Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.

Further Study

At Cavan Institute:

Graduates of this Applied Social Studies course may progress to the first year of a BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care, which is a level 7 Athlone lnstitute of Technology degree programme where students take year one in Cavan Institute and remaining years in AIT. 

Graduates may also apply for a place on the one-year level 6 Health Services Supervisory Management or Social Care with Counselling Skills course, also at level 6, both available at Cavan Institute.


Graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular institution regarding local eligibility requirements).

Career Opportunities

This course in Applied Social Studies provides students with the foundation skills required for employment in a social care setting, for example, disability, youth and adolescent services.
