Practical Learning in Animal Care and Animal Science at Cavan Institute

Hands on learning is a key part of the Animal Care and Animal Science course at Cavan Institute, giving students the opportunity to explore animal biology in a real laboratory environment.

In a recent practical class, tutor Kathy Crowe demonstrated the main parts of a lamb liver and kidney, explaining their structure and function and linking the anatomy directly to animal health and welfare. Working with real specimens allows students to gain a deeper and more practical understanding of animal science concepts.

Student Led Learning in the Lab

As part of the session, students demonstrated the parts of the heart, helping each other to identify key structures and understand how the heart functions. This active involvement builds confidence, reinforces learning, and encourages teamwork, all essential skills for anyone pursuing a career in animal care or animal science.

Students also examined a cow liver, allowing them to compare organs across different animals and recognise similarities and differences in anatomy. This comparative approach is particularly valuable for developing a broad understanding of animal biology.

Building Strong Scientific Skills

Microscopy was also included in the practical, with students viewing a slide under 40 times magnification. Learning how to use laboratory equipment correctly and interpret what is seen under the microscope is an important skill for animal science students, supporting future studies and work placements.

A Strong Foundation for Animal Care Careers

These practical activities are a core part of the Animal Care – Animal Science course and provide students with the scientific knowledge and confidence needed for further study or careers in animal related fields. The skills developed in these sessions also support progression into related science pathways, including forensics, pharmacy preparation, and pre university science.

At Cavan Institute, animal care and animal science are taught through experience, ensuring students are well prepared for their next steps.
