  • Mark McDermott | Cavan Institute

Mark McDermott from Killygarry, Cavan began his Engineering Technology studies with us in September 2022. After successfully completing his QQI Level 5 award with 8 distinctions, Mark secured a round zero offer on 3 August 2023 for a level 8 degree in Mechanical Engineering at TUD. Mark secured a sports scholarship while studying at Cavan Institute. "Before going to Cavan Institute I was unaware of the opportunities that were available to me. I had thoughts of entering an Engineering course but was unsure if it was right for me. Cavan Institute had Level 5 Engineering Technology course that I really liked the sound of. My plan was to do a one-year course and gain my qualification. Cavan Institute provided me with a great insight into the engineering world. In my year of study on this course, many topics were covered to help confirm my interest in engineering. I had various modules throughout the year that helped me gain confidence and knowledge in engineering subjects I had not studied previously. Previously I had no experience of the engineering workshop processes module. It was a great introduction to using new tools and technologies. My favourite module was Auto-Cad (Computer Aided Draughting 2D) as it was great to learn a new software from scratch, I know it will be very useful to me in my future studies and work. There are great work experience opportunities. I spent 10 days at ATA Group Cavan. I found working in a successful company was a great help in understanding how qualified engineers work from day to day. In my year at Cavan Institute, I played football. I was delighted to have the opportunity to play for another team and compete against other colleges and universities in Ireland. I was fortunate to gain a sports scholarship. I also must give a big thanks to all my tutors. They were more than helpful throughout my year. They were very understanding and supportive. They made sure each assignment was completed to a very high standard. I had great support from the Career Guidance team. Aoife Ward helped me become aware of the many opportunities of progression there was from this Engineering Technology course." Best of luck with your future studies and career! Ivan successfully gained a place on the level 8 Degree in Accounting and Finance in GMIT, using the CAO ‘Round Zero’ Offers, and was delighted to hear in early August 2021, that he had secured his place using this new system. "I chose to do the accounting and finance course, as it was something that I also wanted to do since secondary school. The course provided me with a great insight into the Irish business and accounting practices. We used both manual and computerised accounting systems and I found this very interesting. I knew that this course would help me to develop and grow for my future career and give me many opportunities. The tutors were all so friendly and supportive, and so dedicated to their work. I also went to career guidance, who steered me into the right path after my course in Cavan Institute. Thanks to all the wonderful tutors and staff for giving me a great start to college life." • Caoimhe Garvey | Cavan Institute

Caoimhe from Kells, Co Meath attended St Ciaran s Community School, Kells. Caoimhe enrolled on the QQI Level 5 course in Theatre Performance at Cavan Institute in September 2015. After successfully completing the course, she progressed to NUI Galway to study Performing Arts with Arts. "Hi - My name is Caoimhe Garvey. I am 19 years old. I am from Kells, Co Meath. I completed The Theatre Performance course when I was in Cavan Institute from 2015-2016. I am now studying Performing Arts with Arts in NUI Galway. My QQI points from Cavan Institute got me into NUI Galway. (Minimum 5 Distinctions). I believe that Cavan Institute helped me with my confidence. I would have never thought that I would be able to write short films and be able to get them out there. It gave me the confidence to not be afraid of trying new things, which I have. This year I hope to get my very first play on the stage and I hope to direct it. I wouldn't be doing that without Cavan Institute or the amazing talent I met there. The Institute has had an amazing impact upon my life. I loved my time in Cavan Institute so much. It made me take the first steps towards my future. I recommend it and have recommended it to so many people including my Mum, Shelley Garvey, who hopes to be joining you there next year. Thank you Cavan Institute for helping me achieve my success." • Nathan Cassidy | Cavan Institute

Nathan is from Bundoran, Co Donegal. He attended ColAiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Music and Sound Production course. “After receiving my Leaving Cert results in 2019 I was very disappointed with my results as I just missed out on my CAO course by 6 points as I wanted to go to Maynooth University. I knew that I wanted to study music in college, but I didn’t want to repeat my leaving cert. So, I decided to do a level 5 QQI/Btec course in music and sound production here in Cavan Institute. Little did I know that doing a PLC in Cavan Institute was the best thing for me at that time, as I made a lot of new friends who were interested in music as much as I am. In my course, I got to learn the piano and I improved on my music theory also. When I went to Cavan Institute I had little to no knowledge about music production nor music technology which was a worry for me at first but with the help of my tutors and my fellow colleagues I learned so much about the production/technology side of the course. Studying in Cavan Institute has taught me very important skills for college such as getting used to ‘Moodle’, academic referencing in assignments was very important for me to learn as I'll always have to do that in college. I also learned how to take in information in a college unlike secondary school, college has a different way of teaching you the information you need for your assignments/exams. I also got to do work experience in a recording studio in Sligo called ‘Electric Eye Recording Studio’. This was a big benefit for me as I learn skills in the recording studio that will help me for my career in the future and the information that I learned about the recording studio will help me understand future topics that will come up in my studies. I got involved in the music society in Cavan Institute which gave me more confidence when performing as I got to play at different events such as the ‘Cavan Institute Song Contest’. I was the interval act and I got to meet an Irish Eurovision Winner ‘Charlie McGettigan’ that was awesome! I was also involved in the GAA for Cavan Institute. We had an excellent season winning the All Ireland Shield. When our college closed to due Covid-19, our exams were changed to assignments. I had to work hard on them so that I get the chance to get an offer from Maynooth University. I was really determined to get an offer from Maynooth University, so I had worked hard since September. Once I finished my final assessments for college, I had to wait until August to see if I got an offer from Maynooth University by the CAO. I was delighted that I received a ‘Round 0’ offer from Maynooth as they accepted me from my QQI grades here in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Music and Music Technology at Maynooth University. My advice if you're not happy with your Leaving Cert results, and that you know what you want to study, a PLC course is right for you. The best thing about a PLC is that you get to enjoy what your studying and you will be given great opportunities to improve your skills, you get a certification at the end of the year and you can aim to get on the CAO course you wanted by your QQI grades, and lastly, the best thing for me was that I got to meet new people and to make friends with the coolest people ever in my course.” Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Year 1 Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Year 1 Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Ewelyn Oliveria Mac Uaid | Cavan Institute

"Before the course started, I had no idea of what was to come but as soon as classes started, I realised I was in the right place. The modules for this course were very beneficial; we got to learn about the development of children and what to expect from each age group. We learned how to prepare activities for infants and how they can be beneficial to their development. During the year I also got a chance to take part in different courses and workshops. Cavan Institute provided all students with first aid, manual handling and the building communications workshop which better prepared us to work in the Early Years Sector. When the year started, I was scared and did not think I was going to manage the course but everything was very manageable as the tutors helped, assisted and guided me throughout the whole course; making the experience more enjoyable and less stressful. At Cavan Institute, people come in with a dream and leave with a career. Going to college in Ireland was something I have always wanted but did not think was possible. From the very high rates to the long list of documents required, this dream seemed very difficult to reach but Cavan Institute made this dream reachable." Thank you for your very kind and inspirational words Ewelyn. We wish you all the best in your career. • Tracey O'Rourke | Cavan Institute

Tracey is from Cavan and attended Breifne College, Cavan. Tracey completed QQI Level 5 and Level 6 in Early Childhood Care and Education in Cavan Institute. "When I completed my Level 6 award, I then applied to Letterkenny Institute of Technology via direct entry. This got me into a Higher Certificate level 6 [Year 2 of the Degree]. I am now currently in my 1st Year of my level 7 Degree. I successfully completed my exams in January and then on the last week of January I started my 12 week placement in an early childhood care and education placement in Donegal. When I attended Cavan Institute to complete my Level 5 and Level 6 modules in Early Childhood Care and Education, to be honest, it was tough. There was a lot of work involved, so I just studied and knuckled down as this is what I wanted to do. Some days were better than others and there are days I guess I wanted to give up but I didn't, I pushed on. My tutors in Cavan Institute were such an amazing help and if it wasn't for them and the girls in my class I don’t think I would have got to this point in my studies. The most important skills I developed when doing the course was to know that we all have goals we want to achieve, and sometimes it can be hard to reach the goals but that it is important to be learning in a supportive environment. I saw how important it is to also help each other as much as we can. Everyone is aiming to achieve the same goals at the end of the day! And most of all, never be afraid to ask for help as it was always on hand and the tutors were amazing at it. Cavan Institute prepares you so well for progressing onto another college. The work is tough but it’s extremely beneficial in the long run. I never thought I would have gotten this far, four years are almost complete with my final year to go. Hopefully in May 2019, I will be graduating with a Level 8 Honours Degree in Early Childhood Care Health and Education. If I can do it so can you!"
