  • Progression | Cavan Institute | Cavan, Ireland

Round Zero students include QQI applicants for limited-place courses like Nursing, Social Care, Law & more—guided by quality assurance principles. Progression Round Zero Progression Round Zero offers came out on 8 August 2020. Students who fall into the Round Zero category include applicants who are presenting QQI qualifications for courses that have a limited number of places available for these students. These include Nursing, Social Care, Veterinary Nursing, Commerce and Law, to name just a few. We have had many students in Cavan Institute gain access to Higher Education this year using this option. Many courses have an entry route for applicants presenting QQI/FET, but do not have a specific quota. These courses will be offering places in Round One on 11 September 2020. We wish all our students the very best of luck in securing an offer and progressing with their education. National Framework of Qualifications Established in 2003, the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) is a 10-level, single national entity through which all learning achievements may be measured and related to each other. Underpinned by quality assurance principles, the Irish NFQ describes qualifications in the Irish education and training system and sets out what each qualification says about what learners know, understand and are able to do. It also sets out qualifications pathways from one NFQ level to the next. Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is responsible for developing, promoting and maintaining the Irish NFQ. QQI also facilitates the recognition of foreign qualifications. • Chloe Creighton | Cavan Institute

Chloe from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan attended Inver College, Carrickmacross. Chloe completed the QQI Level 5 Make-up Artistry in Cavan Institute in May 2017. "I have always had a passion for Makeup Artistry and from a young age I new that it was the career path that I was going to follow. In my final year of school I spent a lot of time searching for courses which were solely focused on makeup artistry. Most of them were private, which came with a big price and I began to think would it be worth it? Until one day my career guidance teacher told me about Cavan Institute and their Makeup Artistry course that covered all aspects of makeup artistry and offered you your full ITEC Diploma, just like a private college would but for a lot less. I decided to go for the course and it was the best decision I've made. The course covered everything from skincare & hygiene to makeup artistry & business skills which helped shape the makeup artist that I am today. My makeup artistry tutor Patricia Loughlin had a huge impact on me throughout the year, she pushed me to the best of my ability and helped me to not lose focus on the end result. Patricia puts so much time and effort into each and every student with projects, portfolios and assignments which made our college experience a lot less stressful and more enjoyable. After a full year of hard work and dedication to makeup artistry, I was delighted to pass all my exams and receive my ITEC Diploma. I can't thank all the amazing tutors enough for pushing me and helping me along the way. Since completion of this course I was lucky enough to have been offered my dream job with Inglot Dundalk, just 4 months after qualifying. I want to push myself within the company and achieve as much as I can, and with hard work and dedication I was promoted to Inglot Dundalk's Product Specialist in January. Inglot Ireland hosted their first ever annual awards ceremony in March 2018. I was nominated as a finalist under the category Product Specialist of the Year. After the voting stages were over, I attended the the awards ceremony. On the night I was so grateful and overwhelmed to have won and be presented the award for Inglot Ireland's first ever Product Specialist of the year. This is just the beginning! With hard work, motivation and dedication I will continue to grow and achieve all that I possibly can in the future!" • Sharon Monaghan | Cavan Institute

Sharon from Virginia, Co Cavan successfully completed QQI Level 5 Nail and Beauty Care course at Cavan Institute in May 2017. “I studied Nail and Beauty Care last year in Cavan Institute. This wasn’t my first time studying with Cavan Institute. I attended Cavan College in 2003 -2005, studying reception studies and advanced business and computer studies. I then started a job in Quinn Direct/Liberty Insurance where I worked for 11 years. Unfortunately, in 2016, I was made redundant from my job. In 2014 I completed a skin care, eye treatment and make-up evening course in Cavan Institute. I realised I had a passion for this type of work, so when I was made redundant I decided to further my education and return to college. I was keen to attend Cavan Institute because it isn’t too far from home and as I and my two sisters had previously attended here I knew it was an excellent college. I looked at the courses available and narrowed it down to Beauty Therapy or Nail and Beauty Care. The Beauty Therapy course is a two year course and I was not able to commit to this. I looked into the Nail and Beauty Care further and it seemed to be ideal. It’s a one year course, it covers nail technology which includes gel and acrylic nails which are very popular in salons. It also covers manicure, pedicure, waxing, massage, skin care, eye treatments and make up. All of which are the main treatments in a salon. I completed my work experience in December and as a result of my placement I was offered a full time job in May when the course is completed. I really enjoyed the course and the tutors are excellent. I am very happy with the course I choose to do and would recommend it to anyone. I'm now working 4 days in a salon in Kells. I do gel, acrylic, shellac, manicures, pedicure, waxing, tinting, massage, facials, microdermabrasion, make up and tanning. I am working here almost 2 years. I started here after I completed my work experience while studying for the course.” Sharon Monaghan Nail and Beauty Care Sharon Monaghan Nail and Beauty Care Student testimonials Previous Next

Brianna from Rockcorry, Co Monaghan attended St Louis Secondary School, Carrickmacross and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete QQI Level 5 Business Studies course in May 2019. "I choose to study this course as I had just completed my leaving certificate and I was very unsure about what career path I wanted to take before heading to a University. The Business Studies course was very educational and highly beneficial. Throughout the year, I studied 10 different modules, work experience being mandatory. The tutors were very helpful and were always there to guide and support the students. This course gave me great practical skills and really boosted my confidence while completing presentations and submitting class assignments. The highlight of the year for me would be the Erasmus Trip in which I got the opportunity to travel to Slovenia with the college to work in a business environment for two weeks. This trip really broadened my understanding of business while travelling and taking in a new culture which is something I would love to do in the future. The work experience trip made me realise that I wanted to pursue my studies in Business. I cannot recommend Cavan Institute enough with all the experience that I gained which I now will benefit from while studying Business Studies in Dundalk Institute of Technology. • Natasha McKenna | Cavan Institute

Natasha is from Ballinagh, Cavan. She attended Breifne College, Cavan. Natasha is currently studying Business Studies (Level 8) in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Natasha tells us how studying at Cavan Institute helped her on her educational journey. "I first decided to go to Cavan Institute as I was young leaving secondary school (17) and still had no idea what course I wanted to study. I decided on business studies as it was something I had not done before at all and would be completely different to any subjects I had taken in school. When I was studying at Cavan institute, I gained a lot of skills that have stood to me today. These skills have been very beneficial to me studying on the Bachelor (Hons) of Business degree in DkIT. These skills included being able to stick to deadlines, completing continuous assessments, being able to use different computer software packages such as Excel and Sage. Being able to reference my work was also a great advantage to my current course. I completed work experience while studying at Cavan Institute. This helped me gain a lot more confidence working with the public and with other people. The tutors at Cavan Institute gave great support and guidance and really helped every student in any way they could. I gained my full distinction award in QQI L5 Business and used this to apply to DKIT through the CAO Higher Education Links Scheme. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cavan institute I made great friends and I would really recommend completing a PLC course before attending college not only are the skills you learn great but it’ll help students decide whether or not the course they want to do is really for them.
