It includes hands-on practice and will conclude with a final project and detailed course notes and practice sheets. You will learn the basics of the machine, from winding the bobbin, threading the machine and the different functions of the machine. You will also practice basic and decorative stitching using the machine and find out how to apply such stitches in creating garments and textile pieces. You will also be given an opportunity to practice different seams, set seam allowances, blind hemming and complete a buttonhole. Students will be encouraged to complete a finished piece of choice which demonstrates the technical skills learnt within the course. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, but some college machines will be available. Students will also get the opportunity to use an over-locking machine and practice machine troubleshooting. Course notes will be provided. I felt I needed a new challenge and a change in direction. I enjoyed working in an office environment prior to retail but knew that I would need to upskill. I applied for the Office Administration and Technology course at Cavan Institute. As a mature student, I can’t recommend Cavan Institute highly enough. One of the best decisions I made recently was returning to full time education. The staff and tutors were amazing in their support and encouragement on my journey back to education. I am delighted I took the plunge and went back to college. Work experience is a very useful part of the course and can be in a local business. I was lucky enough to take part in the Erasmus programme where I spent my two weeks work experience in Slovenia. I worked in a company which was involved in the development of local and regional projects. My job was to review documents and reports that were translated into English and check and correct grammar errors. I found it very beneficial as it was my first taste of “real office work” for a long time. Emma came to Cavan Institute to study on our Professional Cookery course. Emma has a passion for cooking and she wants to be a chef. She is currently working in Lisgrey House in Virginia, Cavan. Emma told us that "after going to an open day in Cavan Institute, I got an insight into what I would be doing on the professional cookery course. The course helped me build my confidence in my cooking skills as well as my multitasking and organizational skills which are important for being a chef. The course also helped me as I completed 40 days of work experience in a hotel kitchen. This gave me an insight into how a professional kitchen was run and I would have never gotten this experience only for the course. The highlight of the year for me was the Spring meal event that my class and I organised. We planned the event ourselves from drafting up menus to cooking the dishes and I really enjoyed the process as it allowed me to be creative. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Cavan Institute and would recommend the Professional Cookery course to anyone who has a passion for cooking and wants to improve their skills in the kitchen. Edel Hennessy from Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan tells us how Cavan Institute helped her on her way. "When I completed my leaving certificate in St Clares, Ballyjamesduff, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I got accepted to DIT for sports but I opted for sports in Cavan institute which I completed, but didn't continue the sports. Then in September 2013 I started my Hairdressing year 1. Each module was covered in great detail and gave me the love to stay at hairdressing, developing skills I never knew I had. Without the excellent teachers, with great ambition and passion, to help each student to obtain their highest ability, I wouldn't be the hairstylist I am now. During my advanced course I worked part time in a hairdressing salon which lead to full time employment. I felt I was ready to make the jump and open my own hairdressing salon in October 2018. The salon is situated on Main Street Cavan "LUXE the experience". I am always up-skilling with the best in the business and I will continue to bring the best to Cavan.
