  • Sharon Monaghan | Cavan Institute

Sharon from Virginia, Co Cavan successfully completed QQI Level 5 Nail and Beauty Care course at Cavan Institute in May 2017. “I studied Nail and Beauty Care last year in Cavan Institute. This wasn’t my first time studying with Cavan Institute. I attended Cavan College in 2003 -2005, studying reception studies and advanced business and computer studies. I then started a job in Quinn Direct/Liberty Insurance where I worked for 11 years. Unfortunately, in 2016, I was made redundant from my job. In 2014 I completed a skin care, eye treatment and make-up evening course in Cavan Institute. I realised I had a passion for this type of work, so when I was made redundant I decided to further my education and return to college. I was keen to attend Cavan Institute because it isn’t too far from home and as I and my two sisters had previously attended here I knew it was an excellent college. I looked at the courses available and narrowed it down to Beauty Therapy or Nail and Beauty Care. The Beauty Therapy course is a two year course and I was not able to commit to this. I looked into the Nail and Beauty Care further and it seemed to be ideal. It’s a one year course, it covers nail technology which includes gel and acrylic nails which are very popular in salons. It also covers manicure, pedicure, waxing, massage, skin care, eye treatments and make up. All of which are the main treatments in a salon. I completed my work experience in December and as a result of my placement I was offered a full time job in May when the course is completed. I really enjoyed the course and the tutors are excellent. I am very happy with the course I choose to do and would recommend it to anyone. I'm now working 4 days in a salon in Kells. I do gel, acrylic, shellac, manicures, pedicure, waxing, tinting, massage, facials, microdermabrasion, make up and tanning. I am working here almost 2 years. I started here after I completed my work experience while studying for the course.” Sharon Monaghan Diploma In Beauty Therapy Sharon Monaghan Diploma In Beauty Therapy Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Kostyantyn Shavrin | Cavan Institute

Kostyantyn is from Cavan and studied QQI Level 5 Tourism with Airline Studies course at Cavan Institute. "I am a graduate of Technological University Dublin holding a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Aviation Technology and Bachelor of Science (1st Class Honours) Degree in Transport Technology. I am currently employed as a Technical Project Manager within the Aircraft Redelivery Department in Santos Dumont, primarily focusing on the management of aircraft transitions between the airlines, lessors, and aircraft owners, technical records audit, aircraft physical inspections, and aircraft repossession at the time of airline default. Like every student out there when I completed my Leaving Certificate, I had no idea which course to choose and where I wanted to go and study further. The only interests I had were in aviation, business and languages. After spending some time searching the available courses that provided the opportunity to study all three, I chose to go to Cavan Institute and study Tourism. After completing the course, it gave me a clear understanding of where and how to move further using the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). After much thought and deliberation around CAO time, I went the aviation route which brought me to where I am now. The tourism course itself gives you a good overall understanding of tourism, heritage, aviation and customer service and prepares you to get work in all these areas. Basically, by choosing this course you can decide where you want to progress your career further if you are still not sure after completing you Leaving Cert, and even during the course while you are still studying. Sometimes it is hard to know what career to pursue after your Leaving Cert but doing this course gives you time to think about and research all your options. With so many courses out there to choose from in all the universities and institutes of technologies going to Cavan Institute to do this course gives you the time and space to do this. For anyone thinking of studying at Cavan Institute and further progressing your career, I would highly recommend completing the Tourism and Business course. Enjoy your studies." • Nathan Cassidy | Cavan Institute

Nathan is from Bundoran, Co Donegal. He attended ColAiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Music and Sound Production course. “After receiving my Leaving Cert results in 2019 I was very disappointed with my results as I just missed out on my CAO course by 6 points as I wanted to go to Maynooth University. I knew that I wanted to study music in college, but I didn’t want to repeat my leaving cert. So, I decided to do a level 5 QQI/Btec course in music and sound production here in Cavan Institute. Little did I know that doing a PLC in Cavan Institute was the best thing for me at that time, as I made a lot of new friends who were interested in music as much as I am. In my course, I got to learn the piano and I improved on my music theory also. When I went to Cavan Institute I had little to no knowledge about music production nor music technology which was a worry for me at first but with the help of my tutors and my fellow colleagues I learned so much about the production/technology side of the course. Studying in Cavan Institute has taught me very important skills for college such as getting used to ‘Moodle’, academic referencing in assignments was very important for me to learn as I'll always have to do that in college. I also learned how to take in information in a college unlike secondary school, college has a different way of teaching you the information you need for your assignments/exams. I also got to do work experience in a recording studio in Sligo called ‘Electric Eye Recording Studio’. This was a big benefit for me as I learn skills in the recording studio that will help me for my career in the future and the information that I learned about the recording studio will help me understand future topics that will come up in my studies. I got involved in the music society in Cavan Institute which gave me more confidence when performing as I got to play at different events such as the ‘Cavan Institute Song Contest’. I was the interval act and I got to meet an Irish Eurovision Winner ‘Charlie McGettigan’ that was awesome! I was also involved in the GAA for Cavan Institute. We had an excellent season winning the All Ireland Shield. When our college closed to due Covid-19, our exams were changed to assignments. I had to work hard on them so that I get the chance to get an offer from Maynooth University. I was really determined to get an offer from Maynooth University, so I had worked hard since September. Once I finished my final assessments for college, I had to wait until August to see if I got an offer from Maynooth University by the CAO. I was delighted that I received a ‘Round 0’ offer from Maynooth as they accepted me from my QQI grades here in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Music and Music Technology at Maynooth University. My advice if you're not happy with your Leaving Cert results, and that you know what you want to study, a PLC course is right for you. The best thing about a PLC is that you get to enjoy what your studying and you will be given great opportunities to improve your skills, you get a certification at the end of the year and you can aim to get on the CAO course you wanted by your QQI grades, and lastly, the best thing for me was that I got to meet new people and to make friends with the coolest people ever in my course.” Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Edward Davis | Cavan Institute

Edward Davis studied the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies at Cavan Institute. He wasn't sure about what he wanted to do after his leaving cert. Edward shares his story here. "The only subject I enjoyed doing in school was business. I decided to go to Cavan Institute to see was business really for me. After attending Cavan Institute I realised that I did enjoy business and felt this is what I should stick at. I was still unsure about the type of business course I would like to branch off into, so I decided to use the Cavan Institute career guidance service. By attending a career guidance meeting it made me realise the various courses I could get into by getting good grades in Cavan Institute. This motivated me to aim higher. To get into my chosen course, Bachelor of Commerce Global Experience in NUIG, I used my QQI Level 5 award in Business, applying through the CAO under the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). I was offered Commerce Global Experience in NUIG in the CAO round zero offers. The various modules in the business course in Cavan Institute helps give a better understanding of what you may or may not like. I enjoyed the accounting and economics modules a lot, which is why I am doing global commerce as it also includes them, even though I did neither of these subjects in secondary school. All subjects in Cavan Institute are taught from scratch. I also do excel in my current course and it is similar to the spreadsheet module in Cavan Institute, so I felt I had a bit of an advantage. Another big benefit from Cavan Institute is that we learned from the start how important referencing is and it does carry on to college. I was lucky to also have a good knowledge of Harvard referencing before starting my course. For my work experience in Cavan Institute I applied for the Erasmus placement and fortunately was accepted, this gave me the opportunity to work abroad, which in my case was in the UK. I went for 2 weeks on paid work placement which benefited me a lot as I gained a lot of experience in a business over the 2 weeks. One of the main reasons I enjoyed Cavan Institute was the continuous assessment, I feel this suited me a lot more than studying for just one big exam at the end. I feel it is the best way for students to succeed instead of one big exam at the end of the year. Cavan Institute helped benefit me in various ways and got me into the course that I’m in today. I would recommend studying at Cavan Institute to anyone. I didn’t realise myself that by achieving in Cavan Institute it can help you get into nearly any college business course at higher education level." Thanks for sharing your great insights with us Edward. We wish you continued success in your studies and career. • Chloe Creighton | Cavan Institute

Chloe from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan attended Inver College, Carrickmacross. Chloe completed the QQI Level 5 Make-up Artistry in Cavan Institute in May 2017. "I have always had a passion for Makeup Artistry and from a young age I new that it was the career path that I was going to follow. In my final year of school I spent a lot of time searching for courses which were solely focused on makeup artistry. Most of them were private, which came with a big price and I began to think would it be worth it? Until one day my career guidance teacher told me about Cavan Institute and their Makeup Artistry course that covered all aspects of makeup artistry and offered you your full ITEC Diploma, just like a private college would but for a lot less. I decided to go for the course and it was the best decision I've made. The course covered everything from skincare & hygiene to makeup artistry & business skills which helped shape the makeup artist that I am today. My makeup artistry tutor Patricia Loughlin had a huge impact on me throughout the year, she pushed me to the best of my ability and helped me to not lose focus on the end result. Patricia puts so much time and effort into each and every student with projects, portfolios and assignments which made our college experience a lot less stressful and more enjoyable. After a full year of hard work and dedication to makeup artistry, I was delighted to pass all my exams and receive my ITEC Diploma. I can't thank all the amazing tutors enough for pushing me and helping me along the way. Since completion of this course I was lucky enough to have been offered my dream job with Inglot Dundalk, just 4 months after qualifying. I want to push myself within the company and achieve as much as I can, and with hard work and dedication I was promoted to Inglot Dundalk's Product Specialist in January. Inglot Ireland hosted their first ever annual awards ceremony in March 2018. I was nominated as a finalist under the category Product Specialist of the Year. After the voting stages were over, I attended the the awards ceremony. On the night I was so grateful and overwhelmed to have won and be presented the award for Inglot Ireland's first ever Product Specialist of the year. This is just the beginning! With hard work, motivation and dedication I will continue to grow and achieve all that I possibly can in the future!" Mark McDermott from Killygarry, Cavan began his Engineering Technology studies with us in September 2022. After successfully completing his QQI Level 5 award with 8 distinctions, Mark secured a round zero offer on 3 August 2023 for a level 8 degree in Mechanical Engineering at TUD. Mark secured a sports scholarship while studying at Cavan Institute. "Before going to Cavan Institute I was unaware of the opportunities that were available to me. I had thoughts of entering an Engineering course but was unsure if it was right for me. Cavan Institute had Level 5 Engineering Technology course that I really liked the sound of. My plan was to do a one-year course and gain my qualification. Cavan Institute provided me with a great insight into the engineering world. In my year of study on this course, many topics were covered to help confirm my interest in engineering. I had various modules throughout the year that helped me gain confidence and knowledge in engineering subjects I had not studied previously. Previously I had no experience of the engineering workshop processes module. It was a great introduction to using new tools and technologies. My favourite module was Auto-Cad (Computer Aided Draughting 2D) as it was great to learn a new software from scratch, I know it will be very useful to me in my future studies and work. There are great work experience opportunities. I spent 10 days at ATA Group Cavan. I found working in a successful company was a great help in understanding how qualified engineers work from day to day. In my year at Cavan Institute, I played football. I was delighted to have the opportunity to play for another team and compete against other colleges and universities in Ireland. I was fortunate to gain a sports scholarship. I also must give a big thanks to all my tutors. They were more than helpful throughout my year. They were very understanding and supportive. They made sure each assignment was completed to a very high standard. I had great support from the Career Guidance team. Aoife Ward helped me become aware of the many opportunities of progression there was from this Engineering Technology course." Best of luck with your future studies and career! • Strategic Plan | Cavan Institute | Cavan, Ireland

Cavan Institute's strategic plan reflects two years of staff-led collaboration, focused on excellence, innovation, and embracing change for future success. Strategic Plan This strategic plan, the culmination of two years’ work by a wide variety of stakeholders, has been driven largely by Cavan Institute’s staff, who have demonstrated their capacity to identify new opportunities, seek excellence and embrace change. They have been central to the Institute’s success and will readily accept the responsibilities associated with the implementation of the proposed strategy. The development of the plan involved extensive teamwork. In addition to a Strategic Planning Steering Group, led by the management team, working groups were established for specific tasks. The contribution of staff members who joined these groups was highly significant in that they conducted the research, undertook the data collection and put forward ideas of central importance to the future of the Institute. Institute students and graduates, who were consulted by different means and at various stages, have also helped to shape this vision. The involvement of staff from post-primary schools, Youthreach, the adult education sector, Institutes of Technology (AIT, DKIT and ITB) and NUI Maynooth has helped to determine the thrust of the final document and, through an ongoing partnership, to reflect the important role played by this Institute in Irish further education. It is expected that the extent and level of consultation associated with this plan will provide added credibility to its ultimate aim, which is to enrich the lives and enhance the career prospects of each student whom Cavan Institute is privileged to serve Download More from Cavan Institute Courses All Courses Apply Online Start Here Supports Support Services FAQs Get Answers Contact Us If you have any questions, please get in touch.
