  • Andrea Pownall | Cavan Institute

Andrea from Virginia, Co. Cavan studied Pre-University Law at Cavan Institute and progressed to Maynooth University to study Law and Psychology. “I have always had a keen interest in Law, however, school just wasn’t for me. I ended up leaving secondary school in sixth year and I didn’t complete my Leaving Certificate. At the time, I thought that I had completely ruined my chances of becoming a solicitor and working in the legal industry. I applied for the Pre-University Law course at Cavan Institute, expecting not to get accepted. One year later, I am now heading to Maynooth University to study Law and Psychology. I am so thankful to everyone at Cavan Institute for their continued support throughout the whole year. All of the tutors did their absolute best to ensure that I was having an enjoyable and reasonably stress-free experience at Cavan Institute. They motivated me to work hard and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Not only did I learn the key basics of the legal system through classes such as Business Law and Criminal Law, but, I am now more prepared for entering into the university environment. I have learned key essay writing skills; thanks to my Communications class and I know how to complete research for important assignments. I will forever be grateful to Cavan Institute for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity and skills necessary to go to university. Thank you so much.” Andrea Pownall Pre-University Law Andrea Pownall Pre-University Law Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Mark McDermott | Cavan Institute

Mark McDermott from Killygarry, Cavan began his Engineering Technology studies with us in September 2022. After successfully completing his QQI Level 5 award with 8 distinctions, Mark secured a round zero offer on 3 August 2023 for a level 8 degree in Mechanical Engineering at TUD. Mark secured a sports scholarship while studying at Cavan Institute. "Before going to Cavan Institute I was unaware of the opportunities that were available to me. I had thoughts of entering an Engineering course but was unsure if it was right for me. Cavan Institute had Level 5 Engineering Technology course that I really liked the sound of. My plan was to do a one-year course and gain my qualification. Cavan Institute provided me with a great insight into the engineering world. In my year of study on this course, many topics were covered to help confirm my interest in engineering. I had various modules throughout the year that helped me gain confidence and knowledge in engineering subjects I had not studied previously. Previously I had no experience of the engineering workshop processes module. It was a great introduction to using new tools and technologies. My favourite module was Auto-Cad (Computer Aided Draughting 2D) as it was great to learn a new software from scratch, I know it will be very useful to me in my future studies and work. There are great work experience opportunities. I spent 10 days at ATA Group Cavan. I found working in a successful company was a great help in understanding how qualified engineers work from day to day. In my year at Cavan Institute, I played football. I was delighted to have the opportunity to play for another team and compete against other colleges and universities in Ireland. I was fortunate to gain a sports scholarship. I also must give a big thanks to all my tutors. They were more than helpful throughout my year. They were very understanding and supportive. They made sure each assignment was completed to a very high standard. I had great support from the Career Guidance team. Aoife Ward helped me become aware of the many opportunities of progression there was from this Engineering Technology course." Best of luck with your future studies and career! Devorca from Cavan town, completed QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law and QQI Level 6 Administration and IT for Business at Cavan Institute. "I studied level 5 pre-university law and level 6 administration and IT skills. I chose to do the pre-university law course in Cavan Institute. It provided me with a great insight into the Irish law system. It provided me with practical skills that are required in the work place. As part of both courses, one mandatory subject was work experience. I believe that if I had not completed my work experience in a solicitor's office, I wouldn't be where I am today. The work experience gave me great knowledge on how a legal office works. I was also trained up on the software which is used in many legal offices. I am now working in a solicitor's office, being trained as a legal secretary. My courses in Cavan Institute gave me a great insight and has helped me in many ways.
