Cavan Institute was founded in 1985 and since then it’s grown to become one of the largest further education and training colleges in the country. With a focus on your achievement, academic and otherwise, our student-centred approach results in higher than average completion and certification rates (approx. 85% each year). Over half of all our graduates (51%) go on to study for higher certificates, diplomas and degrees at Colleges of Further Education, Institutes of Technology and Universities in Ireland and the UK. A further 41% go directly into employment upon completion of their studies with us. Indeed, we’ve been informed that our graduates who progress to Institutes of Technology and Universities demonstrate higher engagement with the curriculum, are better able for continuous assessment at third level and attain excellent completion rates. So, a year or two spent pursuing a course at Cavan Institute is an ideal platform from which to progress to higher education or employment. I hope you find a course or several that appeal to you and I encourage you to visit our campus on one of our Open Days in summer, autumn and spring. As I didn't study a third language for my LC I was unable to go to university so I came to Cavan College to get that third language in, which then helped me get into university. I am now studying at Maynooth University. I would recommend this course to anyone with an interest in Irish History." - Eli Mellor | Cavan Institute
Eli from Lough Gowna, Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Sports Therapy /Physiotherapy Studies at Cavan Institute and progressed to study Physiotherapy in Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, Holland. "Without Cavan Institute, I doubt that I would be in the position that I am in today. I knew that I would not get the points needed in the Leaving Cert to do a Physiotherapy Course in Ireland, so I used Cavan Institute as a stepping stone to get into a University abroad. The course itself in Cavan Institute is filled with interesting topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Injury Treatment and Prevention, Nutrition and Taping and Strapping. The knowledge that I attained in this course gave me a great start to University. I had a good foundation in the basics of Physiotherapy. Outside of the course, the college is perfect for educating people on how to prepare for life in University by allowing them to take on a more responsible role in their education. This includes completing assignments, practising self-study and meeting deadlines. If progressing into physiotherapy is not for you, there are still opportunities available to work within the sports sector. Before I started my physiotherapy degree, I gained knowledge during the Summer of 2018 by working with various football and soccer teams as a sports physio throughout the Cavan-Leitrim region, but mainly with Gowna GAA. It allowed me to develop my skills in taping and strapping, performing sports massage and using first aid as well. All of these skills are very desirable in the world of sport. My two years in Cavan Institute have allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a Physiotherapist and for that, I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute for anyone who wants to do Physiotherapy or become a Sports Physio." - Emma Carolan | Cavan Institute
"I choose Cavan Institute because it was convenient to me and I had heard good reports about the college and tutors. During my second year at Cavan Institute, studying Early Childhood Care and Education Year 2 , I received great assistance and support from my tutors. Work experience was very beneficial to me as it allowed me to gain an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers. I also learned about the day to day running of a childcare setting. As a result of my work experience, I have been given a full-time position in my work placement childcare setting. I developed skills in assignment presentation as well as communication skills. Cavan Institute is a great learning environment, but there is also a good social aspect of it. There were numerous days in which events were arranged for us to attend e.g. Mental Health Awareness, Well Being etc." We wish you all the best in your career Emma and thanks for sharing your story with us. - Kevin Patterson Hayes | Cavan Institute
Kevin from Carlanstown, Co Meath studied year 1 and year 2 of the Hairdressing course at Cavan Institute. "In the down turn in the economy, I found myself wanting to up-skill in the workplace, I had always had a keen interest in Hairdressing and decided that at 41 years of age, it was the time. Next for me was to find the right college and that was Cavan Institute. Cavan Institute was ideally located, very affordable and importantly, offered a worldwide recognised City and Guilds International Diploma that could be used anywhere. Throughout the course I had fantastic mentoring, continuous assessment of my improving skills and was able to participate in an overseas student exchange programme. Since finishing my studies I have kept full time employment in a job I love and I am in the process of opening a new business in the coming months. I would highly recommend Cavan Institute and their friendly staff and tutors to anyone with aspirations, of any age, to enhance their knowledge or skills." - Thomas Hanley | Cavan Institute
Thomas Hanley completed the Leaving Certificate at Virginia College in June 2015 and like so many Leaving Certificate students was unsure of which career path to choose. After considering a number of courses, Thomas chose the Motor Vehicle Maintenance QQI level 5 course at Cavan Institute. He believed the course would provide him with a number of progression opportunities either to an apprenticeship, QQI level 6 here at Cavan Institute or a Level 7 Degree in DIT. Thomas believes that the Motor Vehicle Maintenance course at Cavan Institute with its practical aspect also helps the student with other subjects such as electronics, motor vehicle theory, team working and auto electricity Thomas said "I enjoyed attending Cavan Institute and found the pace and content of classes ideal". Thomas completed the course in May 2016 and attained a Full Award with Distinction in all subjects. Thomas has now enrolled in DIT Bolton Street where he will study a level 7 Degree in Engineering. Thomas attributes his achievement in securing a place in DIT to the course content at Cavan Institute so much so that his younger brother Richard has now enrolled for Motor Vehicle Maintenance and has already started his studies here in Cavan Institute. - Daniel Morgan | Cavan Institute
Daniel Morgan from Killygarry, Co Cavan, studied the Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant course at Cavan Institute and progressed to Queen Margaret University Edinburgh where he is beginning his 4th and final year of BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course. “It is safe to say I would not be where I am today without having chosen to go to Cavan Institute. I knew I wouldn’t get the leaving cert points required to get a place on a BSc Physiotherapy course, so I did the Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant course as a stepping stone to get to University. The course is ideal for anyone hoping to become a Physiotherapist as I learned about anatomy and physiology, exercise and fitness, injury treatment and prevention and nutrition. These are basic skills required for any Physiotherapist. The course also helps prepare you for University e.g. completing assignments, meeting deadlines, taking responsibility for your own learning as well as giving you a strong base of knowledge. The course is not just for those wanting to be Physiotherapists, its ideal for anyone wanting to work in the sports industry. I’ve worked with rugby and football teams using my sports massage, first aid, taping and strapping skills as well as helping players recover from injury by developing personalised exercises programs. All these skills can be used in any sports. I really enjoyed my two years at Cavan Institute and would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to be a Physiotherapist or work in sports."
