- Charlotte McGauran | Cavan Institute
Charlotte from Ballinagh, Co Cavan attended Carrigallen Vocational School. Charlotte studied Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute and progressed to study European Studies with Law and Spanish in National University of Ireland - Maynooth. "When I was doing the leaving cert I was so clueless about what I wanted to do in college. I got accepted into Art School but I really didn't know if it was what I really wanted to do, so I decided to take a course in Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute. I wanted to try something different and see what was for me before committing to a four year course. I loved the course as it covered such a broad range of interesting topics, I felt that there was never a dull moment as everything being taught was so relevant, local and fascinating. Throughout the year I completely changed my opinion of what I wanted to do in the future. The course was great because it was really open-ended - as a result, you have so many options for follow-up education/progression in so many areas. I was accepted into National University of Ireland - Maynooth based on my results from Cavan Institute. I am now studying European Studies with Law and Spanish. I fell in love with Spanish while attending Cavan Institute and decided I wanted to pursue it in university. The language option offered by Cavan Institute really opened doors for me as it was something I never really felt capable of studying prior to attending this course. It was taught so clearly and proficiently that it really appealed to me as a vocation, and because of it I will now be spending next year in Spain studying on the Erasmus Scheme. I also have the option to undertake an English Language Assistantship in Spain. A huge highlight of the year for me was being selected to represent Cavan Institute at the 1916 National Flag Post Primary Presentation Ceremony in Croke Park where I was presented an Irish Flag by our President Michael D Higgins. Cavan Institute also helped me to secure a two-week work placement with my local politician Joe O'Reilly. During my work placement I got to experience working in his office in Leinster House just before the 2016 General Elections. My success in Cavan Institute was down to my exceptionally helpful lecturers who always made sure I completely understood all of my assignments and prepared me for the dreaded exams. As well as that, Cavan Institute itself was always such a lovely and friendly environment to study in. I made so many friends since day one and I always felt like there was someone there if I needed help with anything. I would completely recommend Cavan Institute to everybody! It really set me up for university and I met some of my best friends during the year." Niamh committed fully to her studies and engaged with every event and task assigned during her time at Cavan Institute. No doubt Niamh's excellent design skills and knowledge will be well utilised. Niamh told us that "Cavan Institute is such a good stepping stone to getting what you want to do in life. I was inexperienced after my Leaving Cert and was super disappointed with my results, but going to Cavan Institute has helped me so much in doing what I want to do with my life. I’ve had the opportunity to go work in Finland through Léargas and Erasmus+ and attended an Adobe Design competition in London. Before COVID-19 hit, I had an opportunity to do an Internship in America for a year. However, I got my dream job out of Cavan Institute which I am in right now. The tutors in CI are really kind and understanding. A PLC is definitely worth doing if you don’t know where to go from Leaving Cert." - Grace Irwin | Cavan Institute
Grace from Magheravelly, Shannock, Co. Fermanagh studied year 1 and year 2 of the Accounting Technician - Computerised Accounting course at Cavan Institute. "Prior to studying at Cavan Institute, I completed a BSc in Architecture in Queens University Belfast. However, given the lack of local work in the industry, I ended up working in a local shop for a year and then decided to head back to the books and change my direction of career to Accountancy. Given the vast change in direction in career path I was nervous about starting again but, the staff in Cavan Institute made this very easy. Each Tutor put every ounce of passion they had for their subjects into the classes and were more than helpful with tailoring the classes to suit the students’ needs and not just focused on getting through the syllabus. With a lot of hard work and dedication I am pleased to say I completed the 2 year full time course in Cavan Institute and finished with a Distinction. As I already had a degree, there was no help financially for me to go back to college so I started baking cakes. Through the power of Facebook, word of mouth and recommendations the little enterprise I set up was soon known near and far. It was tough to get the balance right between books and cakes sometimes, but I believe this has made me the person I am today, strong willed, determined and will put everything into the job in hand. It taught me the need and importance of being organised which is a big asset to have when in the work place. During the 2 years at Cavan the course schedule allows for 1 day of work experience and again the tutors were ever so helpful in making sure everyone who wanted to gain experience got a job. I am delighted to say I got work experience in M O’Toole Accountants Ltd. I worked one day a week up until Christmas when they kindly offered me a full time job for when I finished my exams in May. The experience I gained from this placement was invaluable to the course; I found it really helped relate the content from the class to real world situations and also to bring a real situation into the classroom to help understand the course. I am now a full time member of the team at M O’Toole Accountants Ltd and love every minute of it. I hope to continue my accounting journey with CPA. With the option to do this online it means I can continue working while studying. Cavan Institute was the stepping stone I needed to get into Accountancy and it has been a truly amazing experience from start to finish. I couldn’t recommend the course enough to anyone thinking of going back to college, whether that be a student fresh from school or heading back as a mature student, the tutors have an amazing ability to cater for the needs of all abilities." - Aisling Rose McDonald | Cavan Institute
Aisling Rose studied Cultural and Heritage Studies QQI Level 5 with us last year. She is about to start her Higher Education journey in DCU to study for her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in International Relations. We hope you have a great time in DCU Aisling Rose and thank you for your contribution. It might help another student to make the leap towards Further Education in Cavan Institute. Aisling Rose - "There is an abundance of nice things I would love to express about my time at Cavan Institute. For me, it will remain one of the most beneficial, enlightening and rewarding years of my life. My course enabled me to gain a range of invaluable skills and a fountain of knowledge going forward on my educational journey. The Cultural and Heritage Studies course meant that a multitude of possibilities was opened to me, and I had the brilliant opportunity to learn about the origins and historical background of my home town, delve into and discover how important it is to preserve and protect Irish Heritage and all that it encompasses. I enhanced my French-speaking skills and so much more. The year also rewarded me with being able to acquire practical skills and learn how to incorporate referencing into my assignments. Completing assignments within the time constraints given did supply some stress I will admit, but with the ever-accommodating tutors there to support and guide you, and some self-belief and determination, achieving a high standard of work is possible. The tutors will go above and beyond and answer any queries you may have. I am truly glad that I went to Cavan Institute, and for anyone unsure about whether or not to pursue to a university course, Cavan Institute offers so many courses that will not only gain you a recognised educational achievement but allow many people to have their dreams of moving forward in their pursuit of education manifested into a reality. Anyone who studies the Cultural and Heritage Studies course will not regret it and I can testify to that. I will now be attending DCU for the 2019/2020 academic year, studying International Relations. My experience would not have been the same, if it had not been for some of the overly accommodating, compassionate and helpful tutors, including Patrick Cassidy and Margaret Tiernan among others. I will never forget what they did for me, nor the time I spent there." - Martina O'Reilly | Cavan Institute
Martina from Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Accounting Technician - Computerised Accounting course at Cavan Institute. "At the end of my maternity leave I was due to return to work as a care assistant. I was now a mother to four children and I wanted more for my future. I decided to look into returning to education and on my 35th birthday made the big decision to apply to Cavan Institute for the two year Accounting Technician course and shortly afterwards I received the acceptance letter. I experienced so many emotions over the coming weeks. I was excited about the new challenge but I was also petrified of the new beginning. I felt I had got a second chance and I promised myself I would give it my all. I knew my biggest challenge would be juggling my family and college life but looking back there was no need to worry. The support I received from my classmates was fantastic, but the support I received from the Accounting Technician tutors was outstanding. It went above and beyond my expectations. I cannot thank them enough. At the end of May 2016 I had passed all my exams with Distinction. Three years on from that big decision and I'm working in an accounts office in Bernard Reilly Plant Hire Ltd in Cavan, putting all the skills and knowledge I learned during my time in Cavan Institute into practice. I am continuing my studies online through Cenit College and preparing to sit my first CPA exam. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Institute and looking back it was a very positive and life changing experience. I would highly recommend the Accounting Technician at Cavan institute especially for the mature student." - Tracey O'Rourke | Cavan Institute
Tracey is from Cavan and attended Breifne College, Cavan. Tracey completed QQI Level 5 and Level 6 in Early Childhood Care and Education in Cavan Institute. "When I completed my Level 6 award, I then applied to Letterkenny Institute of Technology via direct entry. This got me into a Higher Certificate level 6 [Year 2 of the Degree]. I am now currently in my 1st Year of my level 7 Degree. I successfully completed my exams in January and then on the last week of January I started my 12 week placement in an early childhood care and education placement in Donegal. When I attended Cavan Institute to complete my Level 5 and Level 6 modules in Early Childhood Care and Education, to be honest, it was tough. There was a lot of work involved, so I just studied and knuckled down as this is what I wanted to do. Some days were better than others and there are days I guess I wanted to give up but I didn't, I pushed on. My tutors in Cavan Institute were such an amazing help and if it wasn't for them and the girls in my class I don’t think I would have got to this point in my studies. The most important skills I developed when doing the course was to know that we all have goals we want to achieve, and sometimes it can be hard to reach the goals but that it is important to be learning in a supportive environment. I saw how important it is to also help each other as much as we can. Everyone is aiming to achieve the same goals at the end of the day! And most of all, never be afraid to ask for help as it was always on hand and the tutors were amazing at it. Cavan Institute prepares you so well for progressing onto another college. The work is tough but it’s extremely beneficial in the long run. I never thought I would have gotten this far, four years are almost complete with my final year to go. Hopefully in May 2019, I will be graduating with a Level 8 Honours Degree in Early Childhood Care Health and Education. If I can do it so can you!"
