- Orla O'Brien | Cavan Institute
Orla from Edenticlare, attended Loreto College, Cavan. "I completed the level 5 course in Science and Laboratory Techniques in 2020. I decided to go to Cavan Institute to prepare myself for University. As I was living at home I could work part-time as well as do my studies, this gave me an opportunity to save up before moving to college. Studying science and laboratory techniques at Cavan Institute gave me an excellent grasp on the essential skills that I will need in university. As a result of completing this course, I have learned the importance of completing assignments on time, submitting them online and referencing researched information correctly. I loved how the modules in this course had a balance between practical and theory classes. This helped to keep me engaged and gave me a deeper understanding of the topics. We went on field trips throughout the year. I enjoyed visiting Maynooth University to do an investigation on the effect of TB on milk production in cows. I found it very interesting. I would like to thank my class tutor Nora Hennessey, for her continuous support, encouragement, and guidance all year. Without her, I would not have got my 10 distinctions. I had the privilege of being selected to travel to Tartu, Estonia on an Erasmus trip. I worked in a veterinary surgical practice and a milk analysis laboratory. I got the opportunity to experience the Estonian culture which certainly was one of the highlights of the year. I would like to thank Dawn Graham for her hard work organising this opportunity. I was part of the student council which helped organise multiple events for the college community throughout the year. I would like to thank Anne Traynor for her continuous support for events all year. She has all students’ best interests at heart. As a result of completing my year in Cavan Institute, I am going on to study a Masters in Diagnostic Radiography in Robert Gordon University Aberdeen. I am grateful for all the support from staff members in Cavan Institute for helping me achieve this. I would highly recommend the Science and Laboratory Techniques course to anyone who is interested in progressing to a third level course in a science-related discipline. It gives you an excellent foundation for core science subjects and teaches you the essential skills that you will need in college. As an aside, I applied to all 3 Scottish Universities and Ulster University and received an offer in all 4. I also received a Round 0 offer to study Clinical Measurement Science in TUD all thanks to my year in Cavan Institute." - Mandy Freehill | Cavan Institute
Mandy Freehill studied Office Administration and Technology at Cavan Institute. Here is Mandy's story: "I decided I wanted to leave the retail sector. I felt I needed a new challenge and a change in direction. I enjoyed working in an office environment prior to retail but knew that I would need to upskill. I applied for the Office Administration and Technology course at Cavan Institute. As a mature student, I can’t recommend Cavan Institute highly enough. One of the best decisions I made recently was returning to full time education. The staff and tutors were amazing in their support and encouragement on my journey back to education. I am delighted I took the plunge and went back to college. Work experience is a very useful part of the course and can be in a local business. I was lucky enough to take part in the Erasmus programme where I spent my two weeks work experience in Slovenia. I worked in a company which was involved in the development of local and regional projects. My job was to review documents and reports that were translated into English and check and correct grammar errors. I found it very beneficial as it was my first taste of “real office work” for a long time. I would strongly advise and encourage anyone, especially mature people or people who have been out of education for a while to go back and give it a go! There are many supports available to you in Cavan Institute and a dedicated team of staff and teachers on hand to guide and help you on your way. As a result of graduating from the Office Administration and Technology course, I am now working as a secretary at a local school." We wish you continued success Mandy. - Kevin Patterson Hayes | Cavan Institute
Kevin from Carlanstown, Co Meath studied year 1 and year 2 of the Hairdressing course at Cavan Institute. "In the down turn in the economy, I found myself wanting to up-skill in the workplace, I had always had a keen interest in Hairdressing and decided that at 41 years of age, it was the time. Next for me was to find the right college and that was Cavan Institute. Cavan Institute was ideally located, very affordable and importantly, offered a worldwide recognised City and Guilds International Diploma that could be used anywhere. Throughout the course I had fantastic mentoring, continuous assessment of my improving skills and was able to participate in an overseas student exchange programme. Since finishing my studies I have kept full time employment in a job I love and I am in the process of opening a new business in the coming months. I would highly recommend Cavan Institute and their friendly staff and tutors to anyone with aspirations, of any age, to enhance their knowledge or skills."
