  • Shane Bell | Cavan Institute

Shane is from Ballybofey, Co Donegal. Shane studied Applied Science - Forensics at Cavan Institute. "After receiving my leaving certificate results in 2019, I was very disappointed. I had enough points for the course I wanted to do in the LYIT but I had failed Maths. I decided to do a level 5 QQI course in forensic science at Cavan Institute. Little did I know that a PLC (Post Leaving Cert) course was the best thing for me at that time. I made a lot of new friends along the way. When I went to Cavan Institute I had some information about forensics but not a lot. So that was a bit of a worry for me, but with help, I gradually learned more and more about forensics and science in general. When I was studying at Cavan Institute, I learned many important skills like getting used to Moodle and Teams. Learning to reference assignments properly was a huge asset. All universities and IoT's insist on academically referenced assignments so I will be confident starting college with this knowledge. I also got to do work experience in a laboratory in Donegal. It was in a creamery called Green Pastures. This was a big help as I learned things that I could use in the future. I got involved in many things while I was studying at Cavan Institute like the Open Days and when the 6th class students came in for science week. I was also involved in soccer for Cavan Institute. In March when Cavan Institute was closed because of Covid-19, we adjusted our learning to an online experience. I had to work hard as I really wanted to get an offer from LYIT. I was determined to get an offer so I worked hard from September. I was delighted when I received a Round 1 CAO offer from LYIT as I got accepted from my QQI grades that I received in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Digital and Security Forensics at Letterkenny Institute of Technology My advice for you is if you're not happy with your leaving cert results or you don't get an offer, don't panic, there are other routes. A PLC course could be the best option for you. With a PLC course, you get to enjoy what you are doing, you also get a certificate at the end of the year and if you work hard enough you can get an offer from the CAO for the college you want to study at. Finally, the best thing for me was, I got to meet new people and made great friends on my course." The course gave me a great combination of subjects – a good mix of practical and theory subjects. It helped me mature and it gave me the skills to get my summer job and I now have this job at weekends while I attend NCI. I had fantastic tutors, they gave me great advice, encouragement and guidance. They always looked out for me. I made many great friends and joined the College soccer team. I really enjoyed this. • Charlotte McGauran | Cavan Institute

Charlotte from Ballinagh, Co Cavan attended Carrigallen Vocational School. Charlotte studied Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute and progressed to study European Studies with Law and Spanish in National University of Ireland - Maynooth. "When I was doing the leaving cert I was so clueless about what I wanted to do in college. I got accepted into Art School but I really didn't know if it was what I really wanted to do, so I decided to take a course in Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute. I wanted to try something different and see what was for me before committing to a four year course. I loved the course as it covered such a broad range of interesting topics, I felt that there was never a dull moment as everything being taught was so relevant, local and fascinating. Throughout the year I completely changed my opinion of what I wanted to do in the future. The course was great because it was really open-ended - as a result, you have so many options for follow-up education/progression in so many areas. I was accepted into National University of Ireland - Maynooth based on my results from Cavan Institute. I am now studying European Studies with Law and Spanish. I fell in love with Spanish while attending Cavan Institute and decided I wanted to pursue it in university. The language option offered by Cavan Institute really opened doors for me as it was something I never really felt capable of studying prior to attending this course. It was taught so clearly and proficiently that it really appealed to me as a vocation, and because of it I will now be spending next year in Spain studying on the Erasmus Scheme. I also have the option to undertake an English Language Assistantship in Spain. A huge highlight of the year for me was being selected to represent Cavan Institute at the 1916 National Flag Post Primary Presentation Ceremony in Croke Park where I was presented an Irish Flag by our President Michael D Higgins. Cavan Institute also helped me to secure a two-week work placement with my local politician Joe O'Reilly. During my work placement I got to experience working in his office in Leinster House just before the 2016 General Elections. My success in Cavan Institute was down to my exceptionally helpful lecturers who always made sure I completely understood all of my assignments and prepared me for the dreaded exams. As well as that, Cavan Institute itself was always such a lovely and friendly environment to study in. I made so many friends since day one and I always felt like there was someone there if I needed help with anything. I would completely recommend Cavan Institute to everybody! It really set me up for university and I met some of my best friends during the year."
