  • Devorca McCann | Cavan Institute

Devorca from Cavan town, completed QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law and QQI Level 6 Administration and IT for Business at Cavan Institute. "I studied level 5 pre-university law and level 6 administration and IT skills. I chose to do the pre-university law course in Cavan Institute. It provided me with a great insight into the Irish law system. It provided me with practical skills that are required in the work place. As part of both courses, one mandatory subject was work experience. I believe that if I had not completed my work experience in a solicitor's office, I wouldn't be where I am today. The work experience gave me great knowledge on how a legal office works. I was also trained up on the software which is used in many legal offices. I am now working in a solicitor's office, being trained as a legal secretary. My courses in Cavan Institute gave me a great insight and has helped me in many ways. I now have the opportunity to become a qualified legal secretary. I can progress to a level 7 Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice in Griffith College." • Shane Bell | Cavan Institute

Shane is from Ballybofey, Co Donegal. Shane studied Applied Science - Forensics at Cavan Institute. "After receiving my leaving certificate results in 2019, I was very disappointed. I had enough points for the course I wanted to do in the LYIT but I had failed Maths. I decided to do a level 5 QQI course in forensic science at Cavan Institute. Little did I know that a PLC (Post Leaving Cert) course was the best thing for me at that time. I made a lot of new friends along the way. When I went to Cavan Institute I had some information about forensics but not a lot. So that was a bit of a worry for me, but with help, I gradually learned more and more about forensics and science in general. When I was studying at Cavan Institute, I learned many important skills like getting used to Moodle and Teams. Learning to reference assignments properly was a huge asset. All universities and IoT's insist on academically referenced assignments so I will be confident starting college with this knowledge. I also got to do work experience in a laboratory in Donegal. It was in a creamery called Green Pastures. This was a big help as I learned things that I could use in the future. I got involved in many things while I was studying at Cavan Institute like the Open Days and when the 6th class students came in for science week. I was also involved in soccer for Cavan Institute. In March when Cavan Institute was closed because of Covid-19, we adjusted our learning to an online experience. I had to work hard as I really wanted to get an offer from LYIT. I was determined to get an offer so I worked hard from September. I was delighted when I received a Round 1 CAO offer from LYIT as I got accepted from my QQI grades that I received in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Digital and Security Forensics at Letterkenny Institute of Technology My advice for you is if you're not happy with your leaving cert results or you don't get an offer, don't panic, there are other routes. A PLC course could be the best option for you. With a PLC course, you get to enjoy what you are doing, you also get a certificate at the end of the year and if you work hard enough you can get an offer from the CAO for the college you want to study at. Finally, the best thing for me was, I got to meet new people and made great friends on my course." • Karla Finnegan | Cavan Institute

Karla, from Cavan Town, studied on our Makeup Artistry course last year. Karla shares her experience with us below. "My experience at Cavan Institute was absolutely amazing. Although it is quite a difficult and heavy course, it was extremely rewarding. I always had a passion for makeup from a very young age and had always dreamed of being a makeup artist. I had researched so many makeup courses around Ireland, most of them being private, which were extremely expensive and quite far away from home. I knew since I was in my 3rd year of secondary school that I wanted to have an ITEC diploma. When I saw Cavan institute offered it, I knew it would be the course for me. While in 6th year in secondary school I attended the open day where I first met my amazing tutor Patricia. Patricia helped me so much throughout the year and I’m extremely grateful to have had such a brilliant, kind and caring tutor. Patricia puts so much time and energy into every single student and always pushed us to do our best. Patricia was always there to help with anything we were struggling with and guide us along the way. Since completing my ITEC diploma, I have opened up a makeup studio and I cannot begin to describe the joy it brings me to be working and doing what I love and have so much passion for. It is the most amazing feeling in the world." Karla Finnegan Make-up Artistry Karla Finnegan Make-up Artistry Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Paul McArdle | Cavan Institute

Paul from Cootehill, Co Cavan attended Beech Hill College, Monaghan. "I came to Cavan Institute in September 2016 to do the Nursing Studies course with the intention of trying to get to adult nursing in Dublin. I had left school at 15 without any education. After only two months at Cavan Institute I discovered it was possible to study adult nursing in the UK. I then applied for some universities in London and also in Dublin. With the results I gained at Cavan institute I was offered two universities in London and also Trinity College Dublin. I am 100 percent certain I would not be at London South Bank University today without having attended Cavan Institute last year. I am at present half way through my first year and doing my placements at one of the bigger hospitals in the centre of London. Doing the nursing studies course was the perfect stepping stone for my first year at London South Bank University. The first year at university is very similar to the year I had at Cavan Institute. I found all the Cavan Institute lecturers in the nursing studies course very helpful and they work tirelessly to help students gain places at different universities. This varies from helping with personal statements or advice on nursing matters as all the lecturers at Cavan Institute are fully experienced nurses with different nursing backgrounds. The nursing studies course is designed perfectly in all modules to help the nursing student progress to the next academic level. Also while at Cavan institute I was chairperson of the students committee. I found this a great way of meeting other students studying in other disciplines. Once again, I am very grateful to everyone at Cavan Institute for giving me the opportunity that I have now in front of me in the UK and my future career as a nurse." • Mark McDermott | Cavan Institute

Mark McDermott from Killygarry, Cavan began his Engineering Technology studies with us in September 2022. After successfully completing his QQI Level 5 award with 8 distinctions, Mark secured a round zero offer on 3 August 2023 for a level 8 degree in Mechanical Engineering at TUD. Mark secured a sports scholarship while studying at Cavan Institute. "Before going to Cavan Institute I was unaware of the opportunities that were available to me. I had thoughts of entering an Engineering course but was unsure if it was right for me. Cavan Institute had Level 5 Engineering Technology course that I really liked the sound of. My plan was to do a one-year course and gain my qualification. Cavan Institute provided me with a great insight into the engineering world. In my year of study on this course, many topics were covered to help confirm my interest in engineering. I had various modules throughout the year that helped me gain confidence and knowledge in engineering subjects I had not studied previously. Previously I had no experience of the engineering workshop processes module. It was a great introduction to using new tools and technologies. My favourite module was Auto-Cad (Computer Aided Draughting 2D) as it was great to learn a new software from scratch, I know it will be very useful to me in my future studies and work. There are great work experience opportunities. I spent 10 days at ATA Group Cavan. I found working in a successful company was a great help in understanding how qualified engineers work from day to day. In my year at Cavan Institute, I played football. I was delighted to have the opportunity to play for another team and compete against other colleges and universities in Ireland. I was fortunate to gain a sports scholarship. I also must give a big thanks to all my tutors. They were more than helpful throughout my year. They were very understanding and supportive. They made sure each assignment was completed to a very high standard. I had great support from the Career Guidance team. Aoife Ward helped me become aware of the many opportunities of progression there was from this Engineering Technology course." Best of luck with your future studies and career! After successfully completing the course, she progressed to NUI Galway to study Performing Arts with Arts. "Hi - My name is Caoimhe Garvey. I am 19 years old. I am from Kells, Co Meath. I completed The Theatre Performance course when I was in Cavan Institute from 2015-2016. I am now studying Performing Arts with Arts in NUI Galway. My QQI points from Cavan Institute got me into NUI Galway. (Minimum 5 Distinctions). I believe that Cavan Institute helped me with my confidence. • Nathan Cassidy | Cavan Institute

Nathan is from Bundoran, Co Donegal. He attended ColAiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Music and Sound Production course. “After receiving my Leaving Cert results in 2019 I was very disappointed with my results as I just missed out on my CAO course by 6 points as I wanted to go to Maynooth University. I knew that I wanted to study music in college, but I didn’t want to repeat my leaving cert. So, I decided to do a level 5 QQI/Btec course in music and sound production here in Cavan Institute. Little did I know that doing a PLC in Cavan Institute was the best thing for me at that time, as I made a lot of new friends who were interested in music as much as I am. In my course, I got to learn the piano and I improved on my music theory also. When I went to Cavan Institute I had little to no knowledge about music production nor music technology which was a worry for me at first but with the help of my tutors and my fellow colleagues I learned so much about the production/technology side of the course. Studying in Cavan Institute has taught me very important skills for college such as getting used to ‘Moodle’, academic referencing in assignments was very important for me to learn as I'll always have to do that in college. I also learned how to take in information in a college unlike secondary school, college has a different way of teaching you the information you need for your assignments/exams. I also got to do work experience in a recording studio in Sligo called ‘Electric Eye Recording Studio’. This was a big benefit for me as I learn skills in the recording studio that will help me for my career in the future and the information that I learned about the recording studio will help me understand future topics that will come up in my studies. I got involved in the music society in Cavan Institute which gave me more confidence when performing as I got to play at different events such as the ‘Cavan Institute Song Contest’. I was the interval act and I got to meet an Irish Eurovision Winner ‘Charlie McGettigan’ that was awesome! I was also involved in the GAA for Cavan Institute. We had an excellent season winning the All Ireland Shield. When our college closed to due Covid-19, our exams were changed to assignments. I had to work hard on them so that I get the chance to get an offer from Maynooth University. I was really determined to get an offer from Maynooth University, so I had worked hard since September. Once I finished my final assessments for college, I had to wait until August to see if I got an offer from Maynooth University by the CAO. I was delighted that I received a ‘Round 0’ offer from Maynooth as they accepted me from my QQI grades here in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Music and Music Technology at Maynooth University. My advice if you're not happy with your Leaving Cert results, and that you know what you want to study, a PLC course is right for you. The best thing about a PLC is that you get to enjoy what your studying and you will be given great opportunities to improve your skills, you get a certification at the end of the year and you can aim to get on the CAO course you wanted by your QQI grades, and lastly, the best thing for me was that I got to meet new people and to make friends with the coolest people ever in my course.” Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Year 1 Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Year 1 Student testimonials Previous Next
