  • Michael Brady | Cavan Institute

Michael from Clones, Co Monaghan attended Largy College, Clones. Michael studied year 1 and year 2 of the Music and Sound Production course at Cavan Institute. "Leaving school, music was always something I wanted to study. I needed to consider my options for the future. I chose Cavan Institute. That decision helped me reach my goals and helped me to get where I am today. I have been accepted into DKIT Music Production - 2nd Year Advanced Entry. Cavan Institute was definitely a positive experience and one I hope to never forget. The atmosphere, the staff, the canteen ladies, the whole place is like one big family! They couldn't make you feel more comfortable. The facilities are great and Cavan Institute had me more than prepared walking into advanced entry and a new facility which I had never witnessed before. I have very fond memories of Cavan Institute and hopefully will continue to return and see everybody. • Daniel Morgan | Cavan Institute

Daniel Morgan from Killygarry, Co Cavan, studied the Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant course at Cavan Institute and progressed to Queen Margaret University Edinburgh where he is beginning his 4th and final year of BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course. “It is safe to say I would not be where I am today without having chosen to go to Cavan Institute. I knew I wouldn’t get the leaving cert points required to get a place on a BSc Physiotherapy course, so I did the Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant course as a stepping stone to get to University. The course is ideal for anyone hoping to become a Physiotherapist as I learned about anatomy and physiology, exercise and fitness, injury treatment and prevention and nutrition. These are basic skills required for any Physiotherapist. The course also helps prepare you for University e.g. completing assignments, meeting deadlines, taking responsibility for your own learning as well as giving you a strong base of knowledge. The course is not just for those wanting to be Physiotherapists, its ideal for anyone wanting to work in the sports industry. I’ve worked with rugby and football teams using my sports massage, first aid, taping and strapping skills as well as helping players recover from injury by developing personalised exercises programs. All these skills can be used in any sports. I really enjoyed my two years at Cavan Institute and would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to be a Physiotherapist or work in sports." • Charlotte McGauran | Cavan Institute

Charlotte from Ballinagh, Co Cavan attended Carrigallen Vocational School. Charlotte studied Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute and progressed to study European Studies with Law and Spanish in National University of Ireland - Maynooth. "When I was doing the leaving cert I was so clueless about what I wanted to do in college. I got accepted into Art School but I really didn't know if it was what I really wanted to do, so I decided to take a course in Pre-University Cultural and Heritage Studies in Cavan Institute. I wanted to try something different and see what was for me before committing to a four year course. I loved the course as it covered such a broad range of interesting topics, I felt that there was never a dull moment as everything being taught was so relevant, local and fascinating. Throughout the year I completely changed my opinion of what I wanted to do in the future. The course was great because it was really open-ended - as a result, you have so many options for follow-up education/progression in so many areas. I was accepted into National University of Ireland - Maynooth based on my results from Cavan Institute. I am now studying European Studies with Law and Spanish. I fell in love with Spanish while attending Cavan Institute and decided I wanted to pursue it in university. The language option offered by Cavan Institute really opened doors for me as it was something I never really felt capable of studying prior to attending this course. It was taught so clearly and proficiently that it really appealed to me as a vocation, and because of it I will now be spending next year in Spain studying on the Erasmus Scheme. I also have the option to undertake an English Language Assistantship in Spain. A huge highlight of the year for me was being selected to represent Cavan Institute at the 1916 National Flag Post Primary Presentation Ceremony in Croke Park where I was presented an Irish Flag by our President Michael D Higgins. Cavan Institute also helped me to secure a two-week work placement with my local politician Joe O'Reilly. During my work placement I got to experience working in his office in Leinster House just before the 2016 General Elections. My success in Cavan Institute was down to my exceptionally helpful lecturers who always made sure I completely understood all of my assignments and prepared me for the dreaded exams. As well as that, Cavan Institute itself was always such a lovely and friendly environment to study in. I made so many friends since day one and I always felt like there was someone there if I needed help with anything. I would completely recommend Cavan Institute to everybody! It really set me up for university and I met some of my best friends during the year." • Sharon Monaghan | Cavan Institute

Sharon from Virginia, Co Cavan successfully completed QQI Level 5 Nail and Beauty Care course at Cavan Institute in May 2017. “I studied Nail and Beauty Care last year in Cavan Institute. This wasn’t my first time studying with Cavan Institute. I attended Cavan College in 2003 -2005, studying reception studies and advanced business and computer studies. I then started a job in Quinn Direct/Liberty Insurance where I worked for 11 years. Unfortunately, in 2016, I was made redundant from my job. In 2014 I completed a skin care, eye treatment and make-up evening course in Cavan Institute. I realised I had a passion for this type of work, so when I was made redundant I decided to further my education and return to college. I was keen to attend Cavan Institute because it isn’t too far from home and as I and my two sisters had previously attended here I knew it was an excellent college. I looked at the courses available and narrowed it down to Beauty Therapy or Nail and Beauty Care. The Beauty Therapy course is a two year course and I was not able to commit to this. I looked into the Nail and Beauty Care further and it seemed to be ideal. It’s a one year course, it covers nail technology which includes gel and acrylic nails which are very popular in salons. It also covers manicure, pedicure, waxing, massage, skin care, eye treatments and make up. All of which are the main treatments in a salon. I completed my work experience in December and as a result of my placement I was offered a full time job in May when the course is completed. I really enjoyed the course and the tutors are excellent. I am very happy with the course I choose to do and would recommend it to anyone. I'm now working 4 days in a salon in Kells. I do gel, acrylic, shellac, manicures, pedicure, waxing, tinting, massage, facials, microdermabrasion, make up and tanning. I am working here almost 2 years. I started here after I completed my work experience while studying for the course.” Sharon Monaghan Nail and Beauty Care Sharon Monaghan Nail and Beauty Care Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Laura McClay | Cavan Institute

Laura McClay from Donegal studied Psychology & Social Science Level 5 in Cavan Institute and received a Round Zero offer for BSc in Psychology in University of Limerick. Laura tells us about her experience in Cavan Institute: “After not getting the high points needed for psychology in the leaving cert, I was very disappointed and unsure of my future. Following some research, I discovered that a PLC could help me get into college. I chose Cavan Institute in particular as I felt it would give me the best chance and I liked the sound of the modules. Having never properly been to Cavan, I was extremely nervous about my decision. However, I can now say that the decision to study here was the best one I could have made. Studying in Cavan Institute gave me the chance to experience living away from home for the first time. I gained independence and confidence. I always looked forward to the social aspect of college and I’ve made incredible friends along the way that I will definitely stay in contact with. On top of that, I also gained invaluable knowledge on research, IT, and the structuring of professional writing. The modules I studied solidified that psychology was the right path for me, and I learned many things that I will bring forward with me when I continue my studies. While the assignments were sometimes stressful, the tutors at Cavan Institute were always friendly and caring, and it’s clear that they put in great effort towards the success of their students. No matter the problem or query, there was always someone willing to help. As well as that, our tutors were always willing to have a laugh with us which kept our classes fun and made learning more interesting for us all. With the help of guidance counsellors Aoife and Orla, I reapplied to CAO as well as UCAS. I was lucky this time around to be offered my preferred choice which is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick. I received this offer in the Round Zero for QQI applicants which would not have been possible without completing the Level 5 at Cavan Institute. My year at Cavan institute was unforgettable and has been nothing but beneficial in terms of preparing me for university. “ We wish Laura the very best of luck with the rest of her studies.
