  • Andrea Pownall | Cavan Institute

Andrea from Virginia, Co. Cavan studied Pre-University Law at Cavan Institute and progressed to Maynooth University to study Law and Psychology. “I have always had a keen interest in Law, however, school just wasn’t for me. I ended up leaving secondary school in sixth year and I didn’t complete my Leaving Certificate. At the time, I thought that I had completely ruined my chances of becoming a solicitor and working in the legal industry. I applied for the Pre-University Law course at Cavan Institute, expecting not to get accepted. One year later, I am now heading to Maynooth University to study Law and Psychology. I am so thankful to everyone at Cavan Institute for their continued support throughout the whole year. All of the tutors did their absolute best to ensure that I was having an enjoyable and reasonably stress-free experience at Cavan Institute. They motivated me to work hard and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Not only did I learn the key basics of the legal system through classes such as Business Law and Criminal Law, but, I am now more prepared for entering into the university environment. I have learned key essay writing skills; thanks to my Communications class and I know how to complete research for important assignments. I will forever be grateful to Cavan Institute for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity and skills necessary to go to university. Thank you so much.” Andrea Pownall Pre-University Law Andrea Pownall Pre-University Law Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Imani Tutu | Cavan Institute

Imani from Cavan town enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law course at Cavan Institute in September 2016. After successfully completing the course, he was offered a place in BCL (Hons) in UCC. "I was just completing my QQI level 4 award, ESOL programme (English for Speakers of Other Languages) 2015-2016. After completing that programme I did not know what was my next step, things like what course, what college were occurring in my head. Then I heard that Cavan Institute were holding an Open Day for the academic year 2016-2017. Without hesitation I attended. As I have always been interested in legal and political matters, I brightly foresaw my future after attending Cavan Institute's open day and then I realised that Cavan Institute offers a legal studies course (Pre-University Law) QQI level 5, I did not think twice. This course (Pre-University law) in Cavan Institute provided me a foundation knowledge of Irish law and Irish legal systems. During my time spent in Cavan Institute, I had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus Plus Programme (Erasmus plus programme allows student to undertake a work placement abroad). Cavan Institute and the Pre-University law course provided a great qualification which allowed me to secure a place in BCL (Hons) in the University College Course (UCC). Our tutors were very friendly and they were always willing to help. In Cavan Institute all student are treated equally no matter their backgrounds, race or gender. The students’ nights out were amazing, just wow…. If there were a level 8-degree course I would love to stay there for few more years. • Leah McDade | Cavan Institute

Leah from Swellan, Cavan attended Breifne College, Cavan and commenced the QQI Level 5 Make-up Artistry course in Cavan Institute in September 2019. "In the year 2019 September, I studied Makeup Artistry in Cavan Institute and received my Fashion, Media and Theatre ITEC Diploma. I loved this course and it was fun to do and I learned many new things throughout the year. I especially enjoyed doing Special Effects as I love doing special effects makeup looks and Halloween is my favourite time of the year. Another favourite element of the course for me was doing the 1920-1980’s period looks, as it was fun to do makeup and dress up my model and create an overall look. I made some good friends in my class and my tutor Patricia was very helpful and encouraging throughout the year. I am so glad I did this course as it was a great experience. After completing my Makeup Artistry Course, in the Summer I started my own makeup and eyelash extensions business from home. I will be attending The Beauty Institute in Athlone to do a Facial Electrical Treatment course and also Brow Lamination and Lash Lift day courses throughout the year and I’m really exited for that!" • Monika Cerekaviciute | Cavan Institute

"There was no doubt in my mind about choosing to enrol in Cavan Institute after seeing the successes my friends have reached in their careers by attending this college. It was the best decision I had ever made to attend here, not only because I got to expand my knowledge and earn a qualification in doing so, but also because I made friends for life who share similar interests as myself. I have my class tutors to thank as they were extremely supportive throughout the year and always offered a helping hand, even if I just needed a chat, or some guidance with an assignment. Every single module that this course delivered was extremely beneficial. I found that having work experience as a module was especially useful because I got hands-on experience in this field of work and will now feel confident seeking full-time employment once I complete my Level 6 in Early Childhood Care and Education next year. I am also very delighted to say that I managed to get a summer job in the creche I did my work experience in. If there was no work experience module, I would not have gotten this amazing opportunity. I know just how nerve-wrecking it can be having to sit a big exam at the end of the year, containing questions about everything you’ve had to take in from September until May. In that situation, a lot of us would crack under pressure and underperform, affecting our final grades. Luckily, Cavan Institute takes a different approach to assess their students, called continuous assessment. I found this method of assessment to be much more effective than any other form of assessment. Having guest speakers come in and talk to us students was very advantageous as it gave us a greater insight as to what childcare and special needs assisting entails. We also got to do a Patient Moving and Handling course, first aid course, and a Lámh course. These courses are very beneficial to us students and I’m incredibly grateful that the college, along with my class tutors, provided us with an opportunity to complete them. I am so happy I chose to enrol in Cavan Institute and I cannot wait to return this September to complete Level 6 Early Childhood Care and Education." Wishing you all the very best in your studies and career Monika.
