- Aisling Rose McDonald | Cavan Institute
Aisling Rose studied Cultural and Heritage Studies QQI Level 5 with us last year. She is about to start her Higher Education journey in DCU to study for her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in International Relations. We hope you have a great time in DCU Aisling Rose and thank you for your contribution. It might help another student to make the leap towards Further Education in Cavan Institute. Aisling Rose - "There is an abundance of nice things I would love to express about my time at Cavan Institute. For me, it will remain one of the most beneficial, enlightening and rewarding years of my life. My course enabled me to gain a range of invaluable skills and a fountain of knowledge going forward on my educational journey. The Cultural and Heritage Studies course meant that a multitude of possibilities was opened to me, and I had the brilliant opportunity to learn about the origins and historical background of my home town, delve into and discover how important it is to preserve and protect Irish Heritage and all that it encompasses. I enhanced my French-speaking skills and so much more. The year also rewarded me with being able to acquire practical skills and learn how to incorporate referencing into my assignments. Completing assignments within the time constraints given did supply some stress I will admit, but with the ever-accommodating tutors there to support and guide you, and some self-belief and determination, achieving a high standard of work is possible. The tutors will go above and beyond and answer any queries you may have. I am truly glad that I went to Cavan Institute, and for anyone unsure about whether or not to pursue to a university course, Cavan Institute offers so many courses that will not only gain you a recognised educational achievement but allow many people to have their dreams of moving forward in their pursuit of education manifested into a reality. Anyone who studies the Cultural and Heritage Studies course will not regret it and I can testify to that. I will now be attending DCU for the 2019/2020 academic year, studying International Relations. My experience would not have been the same, if it had not been for some of the overly accommodating, compassionate and helpful tutors, including Patrick Cassidy and Margaret Tiernan among others. I will never forget what they did for me, nor the time I spent there." - Fidelma Reilly | Cavan Institute
Fidelma Reilly from Drumalee, Cavan tells us about her move from the beauty therapy industry to our Reception and Frontline Office Management course and then employment in administration with HSE. "After being a Beauty Therapist for over 13 years, I decided to go back to education full time as the Beauty Industry was badly affected by the Covid19 Pandemic. I looked at many courses, both part time and full time, and settled on the Reception and Frontline Office Management course in Cavan Institute as I felt it would give me the skills I needed to gain employment as a Clerical Officer or in Administration. I was also drawn to the course due to it offering Manual & Computerised Bookkeeping, an area I had particular interest in as I had seen many jobs advertised throughout the pandemic in this area. I was nervous about returning to studying full time especially as some classes were taught online through Microsoft Teams. The tutors were very supportive and when the course transitioned to being completely taught online the tutors’ support was second to none. They are all very helpful, obliging and encouraging. They were always available for any question or query and the attention to the course work was exactly the same as it had been in the classroom setting. I completed this course in May 2021 and have gained employment as an Administrator in the HSE. I also have made a panel for a Clerical Officer position in the Civil Service. I feel this is due to the modules I completed on the Reception and Frontline Office Management Course in Cavan Institute. I hope to continue to study to gain my Level 6 in BookKeeping part time in the Institute. I would highly recommend this course as I feel it has opened a new door to a new career path for me." Fidelma outlines the many benefits that can be gained from retraining and up-skilling. Well done Fidelma and thanks for sharing your insights with us. We wish you continued success in your (new) career. Fidelma Reilly Office Administration and Technology Fidelma Reilly Office Administration and Technology Student testimonials Previous Next

- Philip McKeon | Cavan Institute
Philip from Aughnacliffe, Co Longford attended Moyne Community School and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Architectural Technology course in May 2019. Philip decided to continue his studies at Cavan Institute and enrolled on the Level 6 Renewable and Engineering Technology course. "When I finished my leaving cert I went straight to college in Galway and realised that the high numbers in lectures and the intense nature of college wasn’t suited to me. I then made the decision to leave and join a course in Cavan Institute which was closer to home and also provided me with far more tuition than any IT or university could ever provide. I always had a keen interest in the built environment and CAD so I decided to do Architectural Technology Level 5. The skills and work that I completed felt like they were way out of my depth before I started but through a lot of 1 on 1 guidance with tutors and also making themselves available for any questions whether through email or phone, I found that this was the best experience I could have had post leaving cert. In the space of a year I managed to complete modules containing AutoCAD, Revit and Photoshop while also completing standard modules such as communications and maths. After year one, I decided to branch off and study Renewable and Engineering Technology. This course was brilliant for me as it was a three day a week course. The course left the opportunity for work experience which I believe is the best way to learn an industry or trade. I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anyone, whether if you are not sure what you want to do or if you’re interested in a pre university course, the guidance of the tutors and opportunities such as work experience in my case led to a job. I would like to thanks my tutors, Shane McCabe and Stacey Gardiner as they were very helpful throughout my time in Cavan Institute and has paved my way from school to the working life." - Aoibhinn McPhilips | Cavan Institute
Aoibhinn from Cootehill, Co Cavan attended St Aidans Comprehensive School, Cootehill. "My name is Aoibhinn McPhillips and I studied Pre-University Law at Cavan Institute. After my Leaving Cert, I was unsure as to what I wanted to do. Law was always in the back of my mind which is why I choose Pre-University Law. Cavan Institute was a great asset as it taught me how to write assignments and it was my first experience of self-directed learning and the tutors were very helpful. The course also gave me the option to work, for example, I am now qualified to be a legal secretary. The Pre-University Law course made me realise that Law was a road I definitely wanted to go down, especially after my work experience with a solicitor. I am now studying a Level 8 BA in English, Law and Business Management in Maynooth University." - Sharon Monaghan | Cavan Institute
Sharon from Virginia, Co Cavan successfully completed QQI Level 5 Nail and Beauty Care course at Cavan Institute in May 2017. “I studied Nail and Beauty Care last year in Cavan Institute. This wasn’t my first time studying with Cavan Institute. I attended Cavan College in 2003 -2005, studying reception studies and advanced business and computer studies. I then started a job in Quinn Direct/Liberty Insurance where I worked for 11 years. Unfortunately, in 2016, I was made redundant from my job. In 2014 I completed a skin care, eye treatment and make-up evening course in Cavan Institute. I realised I had a passion for this type of work, so when I was made redundant I decided to further my education and return to college. I was keen to attend Cavan Institute because it isn’t too far from home and as I and my two sisters had previously attended here I knew it was an excellent college. I looked at the courses available and narrowed it down to Beauty Therapy or Nail and Beauty Care. The Beauty Therapy course is a two year course and I was not able to commit to this. I looked into the Nail and Beauty Care further and it seemed to be ideal. It’s a one year course, it covers nail technology which includes gel and acrylic nails which are very popular in salons. It also covers manicure, pedicure, waxing, massage, skin care, eye treatments and make up. All of which are the main treatments in a salon. I completed my work experience in December and as a result of my placement I was offered a full time job in May when the course is completed. I really enjoyed the course and the tutors are excellent. I am very happy with the course I choose to do and would recommend it to anyone. I'm now working 4 days in a salon in Kells. I do gel, acrylic, shellac, manicures, pedicure, waxing, tinting, massage, facials, microdermabrasion, make up and tanning. I am working here almost 2 years. I started here after I completed my work experience while studying for the course.” Sharon Monaghan Diploma In Beauty Therapy Sharon Monaghan Diploma In Beauty Therapy Student testimonials Previous Next

- Kostyantyn Shavrin | Cavan Institute
Kostyantyn is from Cavan and studied QQI Level 5 Tourism with Airline Studies course at Cavan Institute. "I am a graduate of Technological University Dublin holding a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Aviation Technology and Bachelor of Science (1st Class Honours) Degree in Transport Technology. I am currently employed as a Technical Project Manager within the Aircraft Redelivery Department in Santos Dumont, primarily focusing on the management of aircraft transitions between the airlines, lessors, and aircraft owners, technical records audit, aircraft physical inspections, and aircraft repossession at the time of airline default. Like every student out there when I completed my Leaving Certificate, I had no idea which course to choose and where I wanted to go and study further. The only interests I had were in aviation, business and languages. After spending some time searching the available courses that provided the opportunity to study all three, I chose to go to Cavan Institute and study Tourism. After completing the course, it gave me a clear understanding of where and how to move further using the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). After much thought and deliberation around CAO time, I went the aviation route which brought me to where I am now. The tourism course itself gives you a good overall understanding of tourism, heritage, aviation and customer service and prepares you to get work in all these areas. Basically, by choosing this course you can decide where you want to progress your career further if you are still not sure after completing you Leaving Cert, and even during the course while you are still studying. Sometimes it is hard to know what career to pursue after your Leaving Cert but doing this course gives you time to think about and research all your options. With so many courses out there to choose from in all the universities and institutes of technologies going to Cavan Institute to do this course gives you the time and space to do this. For anyone thinking of studying at Cavan Institute and further progressing your career, I would highly recommend completing the Tourism and Business course. Enjoy your studies." - Nathan Cassidy | Cavan Institute
Nathan is from Bundoran, Co Donegal. He attended ColAiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Music and Sound Production course. “After receiving my Leaving Cert results in 2019 I was very disappointed with my results as I just missed out on my CAO course by 6 points as I wanted to go to Maynooth University. I knew that I wanted to study music in college, but I didn’t want to repeat my leaving cert. So, I decided to do a level 5 QQI/Btec course in music and sound production here in Cavan Institute. Little did I know that doing a PLC in Cavan Institute was the best thing for me at that time, as I made a lot of new friends who were interested in music as much as I am. In my course, I got to learn the piano and I improved on my music theory also. When I went to Cavan Institute I had little to no knowledge about music production nor music technology which was a worry for me at first but with the help of my tutors and my fellow colleagues I learned so much about the production/technology side of the course. Studying in Cavan Institute has taught me very important skills for college such as getting used to ‘Moodle’, academic referencing in assignments was very important for me to learn as I'll always have to do that in college. I also learned how to take in information in a college unlike secondary school, college has a different way of teaching you the information you need for your assignments/exams. I also got to do work experience in a recording studio in Sligo called ‘Electric Eye Recording Studio’. This was a big benefit for me as I learn skills in the recording studio that will help me for my career in the future and the information that I learned about the recording studio will help me understand future topics that will come up in my studies. I got involved in the music society in Cavan Institute which gave me more confidence when performing as I got to play at different events such as the ‘Cavan Institute Song Contest’. I was the interval act and I got to meet an Irish Eurovision Winner ‘Charlie McGettigan’ that was awesome! I was also involved in the GAA for Cavan Institute. We had an excellent season winning the All Ireland Shield. When our college closed to due Covid-19, our exams were changed to assignments. I had to work hard on them so that I get the chance to get an offer from Maynooth University. I was really determined to get an offer from Maynooth University, so I had worked hard since September. Once I finished my final assessments for college, I had to wait until August to see if I got an offer from Maynooth University by the CAO. I was delighted that I received a ‘Round 0’ offer from Maynooth as they accepted me from my QQI grades here in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Music and Music Technology at Maynooth University. My advice if you're not happy with your Leaving Cert results, and that you know what you want to study, a PLC course is right for you. The best thing about a PLC is that you get to enjoy what your studying and you will be given great opportunities to improve your skills, you get a certification at the end of the year and you can aim to get on the CAO course you wanted by your QQI grades, and lastly, the best thing for me was that I got to meet new people and to make friends with the coolest people ever in my course.” Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Nathan Cassidy Music and Sound Production Student testimonials Previous Next
