- Laura McClay | Cavan Institute
Laura McClay from Donegal studied Psychology & Social Science Level 5 in Cavan Institute and received a Round Zero offer for BSc in Psychology in University of Limerick. Laura tells us about her experience in Cavan Institute: “After not getting the high points needed for psychology in the leaving cert, I was very disappointed and unsure of my future. Following some research, I discovered that a PLC could help me get into college. I chose Cavan Institute in particular as I felt it would give me the best chance and I liked the sound of the modules. Having never properly been to Cavan, I was extremely nervous about my decision. However, I can now say that the decision to study here was the best one I could have made. Studying in Cavan Institute gave me the chance to experience living away from home for the first time. I gained independence and confidence. I always looked forward to the social aspect of college and I’ve made incredible friends along the way that I will definitely stay in contact with. On top of that, I also gained invaluable knowledge on research, IT, and the structuring of professional writing. The modules I studied solidified that psychology was the right path for me, and I learned many things that I will bring forward with me when I continue my studies. While the assignments were sometimes stressful, the tutors at Cavan Institute were always friendly and caring, and it’s clear that they put in great effort towards the success of their students. No matter the problem or query, there was always someone willing to help. As well as that, our tutors were always willing to have a laugh with us which kept our classes fun and made learning more interesting for us all. With the help of guidance counsellors Aoife and Orla, I reapplied to CAO as well as UCAS. I was lucky this time around to be offered my preferred choice which is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick. I received this offer in the Round Zero for QQI applicants which would not have been possible without completing the Level 5 at Cavan Institute. My year at Cavan institute was unforgettable and has been nothing but beneficial in terms of preparing me for university. “ We wish Laura the very best of luck with the rest of her studies. - Dylan Hickey | Cavan Institute
Thanks for sharing your story Dylan. "When I originally finished my leaving cert in 2016 I unfortunately didn’t get the points that I wanted for my course and because I had no plan B, I decided to work for 3 years. In 2019, I chose to study Music and Sound Production in Cavan Institute as this was a subject area that I had a strong passion for. Studying at Cavan Institute was the best decision I ever made. Throughout my two years there I learned everything I could possibly need to go to higher education or even to join the world of work. My modules varied from theory elements, to practical elements of the music industry. We learned how to use industry standard equipment to a high level, I even gained a full qualification in Pro Tools which was included on top of my other modules and I also completed work experience which gave me insight into what life is like in the music industry outside of an academic institution. In terms of academic learning, I gained knowledge in how to complete assignments to a high standard and how to reference and complete thesis level papers. I have made some life-long friends during my time at Cavan Institute and thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience. On campus life and even virtual life during the pandemic felt great and I had all the help I could ever need from my tutors. I feel prepared to start the next step of my journey in a level 8 music production course, and would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anybody who has a passion for this subject." - Daniel Morgan | Cavan Institute
Daniel Morgan from Killygarry, Co Cavan, studied the Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant course at Cavan Institute and progressed to Queen Margaret University Edinburgh where he is beginning his 4th and final year of BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course. “It is safe to say I would not be where I am today without having chosen to go to Cavan Institute. I knew I wouldn’t get the leaving cert points required to get a place on a BSc Physiotherapy course, so I did the Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy Assistant course as a stepping stone to get to University. The course is ideal for anyone hoping to become a Physiotherapist as I learned about anatomy and physiology, exercise and fitness, injury treatment and prevention and nutrition. These are basic skills required for any Physiotherapist. The course also helps prepare you for University e.g. completing assignments, meeting deadlines, taking responsibility for your own learning as well as giving you a strong base of knowledge. The course is not just for those wanting to be Physiotherapists, its ideal for anyone wanting to work in the sports industry. I’ve worked with rugby and football teams using my sports massage, first aid, taping and strapping skills as well as helping players recover from injury by developing personalised exercises programs. All these skills can be used in any sports. I really enjoyed my two years at Cavan Institute and would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to be a Physiotherapist or work in sports." - Aoife O'Flynn | Cavan Institute
Aoife from Ballyhaise, Co Cavan enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Hairdressing at Cavan Institute in September 2019. "Starting college as a mature student with children was very nerve wrecking, however Cavan Institute made the transition very relaxed and smooth. They helped with grant applications, childcare and even with my total lack of computer knowledge. There are a number of resources available in the college that are available to all students. The knowledge and experience I gained on the Hairdressing course last year I will carry with my throughout my life. It's not just about throwing a colour in or a quick trim you are taught everything from the hair structure to layer cuts, mens cuts, hair extensions and wigs to name but a few. Doing assignments was a whole new concept to me but with the help of fellow students and lecturers I ended up really enjoying them. My advice to anyone thinking of joining Cavan Institute is 'if in doubt go check it out'. There is a course for everyone. Last year I ended up picking up extra modules and doing make up and massage and I also did a gel nail course while juggling home life and the kids, all with the help and thanks of my family, friends and Cavan Institute." Jarlath from Derrycramph, Cavan attended St Patrick's College, Cavan. Jarlath studied QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law in Cavan Institute and progressed to IT Carlow to study Honours Bachelor of Laws LLB degree. "Having completed my leaving cert I was unsure of what I wanted to study at higher education however I always had a keen interest in law and current affairs. I had been offered an arts with history degree in NUIG but I did not feel ready to leave home at that time. I choose to study the pre university law programme in Cavan Institute and it provided me with a foundation insight into the Irish legal system in both civil and criminal proceedings. I would greatly recommend students who have just completed their leaving certs to complete a QQI/FETAC course before you progress to higher education because it provides students with the practical skills required in the modern workplace through the completion of the work experience programme. The modules in this course include law modules such as business law and criminal law as well as business based subjects such as business administration skills. There is a wide variety of arts, business, law, theology or social science degrees of which this course can be used as a progression route to. Tutors in Cavan Institute are supportive and cooperative with their students. I have now started the Honours Bachelor of Laws LLB degree this year in IT Carlow and I know the help and support I received from Cavan Institute will be of tremendous benefit to me both academically and socially."
