- Grace Irwin | Cavan Institute
Grace from Magheravelly, Shannock, Co. Fermanagh studied year 1 and year 2 of the Accounting Technician - Computerised Accounting course at Cavan Institute. "Prior to studying at Cavan Institute, I completed a BSc in Architecture in Queens University Belfast. However, given the lack of local work in the industry, I ended up working in a local shop for a year and then decided to head back to the books and change my direction of career to Accountancy. Given the vast change in direction in career path I was nervous about starting again but, the staff in Cavan Institute made this very easy. Each Tutor put every ounce of passion they had for their subjects into the classes and were more than helpful with tailoring the classes to suit the students’ needs and not just focused on getting through the syllabus. With a lot of hard work and dedication I am pleased to say I completed the 2 year full time course in Cavan Institute and finished with a Distinction. As I already had a degree, there was no help financially for me to go back to college so I started baking cakes. Through the power of Facebook, word of mouth and recommendations the little enterprise I set up was soon known near and far. It was tough to get the balance right between books and cakes sometimes, but I believe this has made me the person I am today, strong willed, determined and will put everything into the job in hand. It taught me the need and importance of being organised which is a big asset to have when in the work place. During the 2 years at Cavan the course schedule allows for 1 day of work experience and again the tutors were ever so helpful in making sure everyone who wanted to gain experience got a job. I am delighted to say I got work experience in M O’Toole Accountants Ltd. I worked one day a week up until Christmas when they kindly offered me a full time job for when I finished my exams in May. The experience I gained from this placement was invaluable to the course; I found it really helped relate the content from the class to real world situations and also to bring a real situation into the classroom to help understand the course. I am now a full time member of the team at M O’Toole Accountants Ltd and love every minute of it. I hope to continue my accounting journey with CPA. With the option to do this online it means I can continue working while studying. Cavan Institute was the stepping stone I needed to get into Accountancy and it has been a truly amazing experience from start to finish. I couldn’t recommend the course enough to anyone thinking of going back to college, whether that be a student fresh from school or heading back as a mature student, the tutors have an amazing ability to cater for the needs of all abilities." - Shauna Courtney | Cavan Institute
"My life as a Cavan Institute Student showed me the possibilities and the career paths that I could take in the Performance Industry. From working behind the scenes of a production, to being centre stage in a show, there were many progression routes. Cavan Institute gave me a hopeful insight on what my life could look like in the future. And thanks to the Theatre Performance Course, and the Qualification I’ve received, I am one of many students attending the new Atlantic Technological University in Sligo to further my career in this field. I chose Cavan Institute because it was close to home, and I could commute to the college. I also chose this course to see if I wanted to have a career in Acting. I've learnt so much there, like how to make a portfolio, the basics in Acting and Theatre. The Course also helps you to come out of your comfort zone, and for me, I’ve gained a lot more confidence. I gained work experience at Backstage Theatre Longford and I learnt so much working there and was treated equally to the rest of the team. Through doing this course, not only did I learn so much, but I met like-minded people and made friends for life. We’ve been with each other through this journey, and we finished this chapter of our lives together. It's true what they say: If you love what you do, then you NEVER work a day in your Life!!!" - Edward Davis | Cavan Institute
Edward Davis studied the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies at Cavan Institute. He wasn't sure about what he wanted to do after his leaving cert. Edward shares his story here. "The only subject I enjoyed doing in school was business. I decided to go to Cavan Institute to see was business really for me. After attending Cavan Institute I realised that I did enjoy business and felt this is what I should stick at. I was still unsure about the type of business course I would like to branch off into, so I decided to use the Cavan Institute career guidance service. By attending a career guidance meeting it made me realise the various courses I could get into by getting good grades in Cavan Institute. This motivated me to aim higher. To get into my chosen course, Bachelor of Commerce Global Experience in NUIG, I used my QQI Level 5 award in Business, applying through the CAO under the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). I was offered Commerce Global Experience in NUIG in the CAO round zero offers. The various modules in the business course in Cavan Institute helps give a better understanding of what you may or may not like. I enjoyed the accounting and economics modules a lot, which is why I am doing global commerce as it also includes them, even though I did neither of these subjects in secondary school. All subjects in Cavan Institute are taught from scratch. I also do excel in my current course and it is similar to the spreadsheet module in Cavan Institute, so I felt I had a bit of an advantage. Another big benefit from Cavan Institute is that we learned from the start how important referencing is and it does carry on to college. I was lucky to also have a good knowledge of Harvard referencing before starting my course. For my work experience in Cavan Institute I applied for the Erasmus placement and fortunately was accepted, this gave me the opportunity to work abroad, which in my case was in the UK. I went for 2 weeks on paid work placement which benefited me a lot as I gained a lot of experience in a business over the 2 weeks. One of the main reasons I enjoyed Cavan Institute was the continuous assessment, I feel this suited me a lot more than studying for just one big exam at the end. I feel it is the best way for students to succeed instead of one big exam at the end of the year. Cavan Institute helped benefit me in various ways and got me into the course that I’m in today. I would recommend studying at Cavan Institute to anyone. I didn’t realise myself that by achieving in Cavan Institute it can help you get into nearly any college business course at higher education level." Thanks for sharing your great insights with us Edward. We wish you continued success in your studies and career. - Aine Smith | Cavan Institute
Aine Smith from Cootehill, Co. Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Childcare course in Cavan Institute and progressed to study BA Hons Degree in Dundalk Institute of Technology. "When I completed my leaving certificate I had no idea what I wanted to do. So, I opted to do a year in Cavan Institute in Childcare, this then progressed on to two years. The modules covered were excellent if you wanted to gain an insight into the early childhood sector in particular, child development and early childhood curriculum these elements were interesting but also are fundamental in the work place today. Each of the modules covered in the course give you the basis and confidence to go on to work in the sector but equally to progress in your studies. I developed skills in assignment presentation but equally in time management and meeting deadlines. The variety and consistency of work placements allowed us, as students, in Cavan Institute to get a taste of what it is like to work in the early years sector. I attended placement in Halle, in Germany as part of my studies with Cavan Institute, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. This experience allowed me to get a flavour of what it is like to work in the early years sector in an international placement. It allowed me to broaden my horizon as to the various job opportunities there are abroad. This childcare course at Cavan Institute really emphasises the importance of early year’s educators to have a good knowledge of child development, but also to provide children with rich learning experiences. As a student you are encouraged to share any thoughts and ideas in relation to each module and this is extremely important as it also broadens your knowledge. It is true to say that I would not have gone on to complete my BA Hons Degree in Dundalk Institute of Technology only for the supportive tutors that I had in Cavan Institute. I am currently working full time as a preschool leader in a prestigious early years' service in Cavan. As the early years sector continues to strive towards quality provision, it is essential to have quality trained staff. At present I am engaging in continual professional development in a Leadership for Inclusion programme (LINC Programme) which is designed to facilitate early years’ educators to promote the inclusion of children with additional needs." - Kostyantyn Shavrin | Cavan Institute
Kostyantyn is from Cavan and studied QQI Level 5 Tourism with Airline Studies course at Cavan Institute. "I am a graduate of Technological University Dublin holding a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Aviation Technology and Bachelor of Science (1st Class Honours) Degree in Transport Technology. I am currently employed as a Technical Project Manager within the Aircraft Redelivery Department in Santos Dumont, primarily focusing on the management of aircraft transitions between the airlines, lessors, and aircraft owners, technical records audit, aircraft physical inspections, and aircraft repossession at the time of airline default. Like every student out there when I completed my Leaving Certificate, I had no idea which course to choose and where I wanted to go and study further. The only interests I had were in aviation, business and languages. After spending some time searching the available courses that provided the opportunity to study all three, I chose to go to Cavan Institute and study Tourism. After completing the course, it gave me a clear understanding of where and how to move further using the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). After much thought and deliberation around CAO time, I went the aviation route which brought me to where I am now. The tourism course itself gives you a good overall understanding of tourism, heritage, aviation and customer service and prepares you to get work in all these areas. Basically, by choosing this course you can decide where you want to progress your career further if you are still not sure after completing you Leaving Cert, and even during the course while you are still studying. Sometimes it is hard to know what career to pursue after your Leaving Cert but doing this course gives you time to think about and research all your options. With so many courses out there to choose from in all the universities and institutes of technologies going to Cavan Institute to do this course gives you the time and space to do this. For anyone thinking of studying at Cavan Institute and further progressing your career, I would highly recommend completing the Tourism and Business course. Enjoy your studies."
