  • Brianna McGorman | Cavan Institute

Brianna from Rockcorry, Co Monaghan attended St Louis Secondary School, Carrickmacross and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete QQI Level 5 Business Studies course in May 2019. "I choose to study this course as I had just completed my leaving certificate and I was very unsure about what career path I wanted to take before heading to a University. The Business Studies course was very educational and highly beneficial. Throughout the year, I studied 10 different modules, work experience being mandatory. The tutors were very helpful and were always there to guide and support the students. This course gave me great practical skills and really boosted my confidence while completing presentations and submitting class assignments. The highlight of the year for me would be the Erasmus Trip in which I got the opportunity to travel to Slovenia with the college to work in a business environment for two weeks. This trip really broadened my understanding of business while travelling and taking in a new culture which is something I would love to do in the future. The work experience trip made me realise that I wanted to pursue my studies in Business. I cannot recommend Cavan Institute enough with all the experience that I gained which I now will benefit from while studying Business Studies in Dundalk Institute of Technology. A huge thank you to my tutors Michelle Marron and Maureen Lynch for being so helpful and supportive throughout the year." • Shauna Courtney | Cavan Institute

"My life as a Cavan Institute Student showed me the possibilities and the career paths that I could take in the Performance Industry. From working behind the scenes of a production, to being centre stage in a show, there were many progression routes. Cavan Institute gave me a hopeful insight on what my life could look like in the future. And thanks to the Theatre Performance Course, and the Qualification I’ve received, I am one of many students attending the new Atlantic Technological University in Sligo to further my career in this field. I chose Cavan Institute because it was close to home, and I could commute to the college. I also chose this course to see if I wanted to have a career in Acting. I've learnt so much there, like how to make a portfolio, the basics in Acting and Theatre. The Course also helps you to come out of your comfort zone, and for me, I’ve gained a lot more confidence. I gained work experience at Backstage Theatre Longford and I learnt so much working there and was treated equally to the rest of the team. Through doing this course, not only did I learn so much, but I met like-minded people and made friends for life. We’ve been with each other through this journey, and we finished this chapter of our lives together. It's true what they say: If you love what you do, then you NEVER work a day in your Life!!!" Siobhan says that “during my year at Cavan Institute studying Occupational Therapy Studies, I made so many new friends both in my course and in other courses. The atmosphere was always very pleasant and welcoming. I found the subjects fascinating in my course and really enjoyed learning what occupational therapy is and the many ways in which occupational therapists help people to recover and live with their congenital or acquired injuries. As a result of completing this course at Cavan Institute I am now heading to Aberdeen and to get my Masters in Occupational Therapy. It was always my goal to get my masters and being able to do so within 4 years is ideal! Unfortunately, my course will be online for the first semester but I am still moving over to student accommodation and there will be loads of opportunities to meet people in my course and on the university football team. I feel more than prepared for this high-intensity and professional course as a result of the work I did in CI and the assignments given by the tutors. They were very practical assignments and really gave me a feel for the work I will be doing in the future.” Siobhan O’Reilly Pre-University Occupational Therapy Assistant Siobhan O’Reilly Pre-University Occupational Therapy Assistant Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Paul McArdle | Cavan Institute

Paul from Cootehill, Co Cavan attended Beech Hill College, Monaghan. "I came to Cavan Institute in September 2016 to do the Nursing Studies course with the intention of trying to get to adult nursing in Dublin. I had left school at 15 without any education. After only two months at Cavan Institute I discovered it was possible to study adult nursing in the UK. I then applied for some universities in London and also in Dublin. With the results I gained at Cavan institute I was offered two universities in London and also Trinity College Dublin. I am 100 percent certain I would not be at London South Bank University today without having attended Cavan Institute last year. I am at present half way through my first year and doing my placements at one of the bigger hospitals in the centre of London. Doing the nursing studies course was the perfect stepping stone for my first year at London South Bank University. The first year at university is very similar to the year I had at Cavan Institute. I found all the Cavan Institute lecturers in the nursing studies course very helpful and they work tirelessly to help students gain places at different universities. This varies from helping with personal statements or advice on nursing matters as all the lecturers at Cavan Institute are fully experienced nurses with different nursing backgrounds. The nursing studies course is designed perfectly in all modules to help the nursing student progress to the next academic level. Also while at Cavan institute I was chairperson of the students committee. I found this a great way of meeting other students studying in other disciplines. Once again, I am very grateful to everyone at Cavan Institute for giving me the opportunity that I have now in front of me in the UK and my future career as a nurse." • Laura Kellegher | Cavan Institute

Laura from Ballyconnell, Co Cavan attended Loreto College, Cavan. Laura was unsure what career path she wanted and decided to study QQI Level 5 in Multimedia and Web Development at Cavan Institute. Laura successfully completed this course in May 2014 and continued her studies in Multimedia at Dublin City University. "After completing the Leaving Cert in 2013, unsure of what career path I wanted to pursue, I deferred my CAO offer for a year and chose to take a year to study Multimedia and Web Development in Cavan Institute. I did this for two reasons; one being I always had an interest in working with computers, and by studying this course I would get the chance to learn valuable skills that would benefit me regardless of what career path I found myself on at the end of the year, and thought it would be particularly useful due to the rate at which technology and the use of social media are advancing at present. Secondly, I decided to take a year to study at Cavan Institute, to bridge the gap between leaving secondary school and starting a third level college. It allowed me to develop my independence and gave me an insight into what to expect when I when I did go on to study at third level, and the amount of work and self-motivation that was necessary. It also showed me the standard and expectations I would be required to meet. The Multimedia & Web Development course offers a wide range of modules from Image Processing and Film Production to Web Design and Work Experience, it really has something for everyone. It gives you a brilliant insight into the different areas of multimedia and what they involve. The understanding and knowledge I had of the Adobe Suite software, was invaluable to me in my first year at in college, as it meant that I already had a good grasp of what others were only learning about for the first time, which left it more enjoyable and less stressful for me. The tutors and staff provided an excellent support system and were always there to help me, offering advice and guidance whenever I had any questions or problems, no matter how big or small. I also found that the smaller class sizes were of huge benefit. This meant that not only were the classes tailored to our abilities and interests when possible, we were able to communicate with the tutors directly. We were more than just a number, they took the time to sit down with us and help us if we found something difficult, going through it step-by-step if necessary. At the end of the year, I decided to do a complete U-turn and change my CAO application form (from Social Studies!) and applied to study the Multimedia course at Dublin City University. I graduated in 2017 and am currently working within the Marketing industry, where no two days are the same! All of this wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to study at Cavan Institute, where I developed my skills and knowledge of Multimedia, while receiving the support and encouragement of the staff and tutors there."
