  • Aisling Rose McDonald | Cavan Institute

Aisling Rose studied Cultural and Heritage Studies QQI Level 5 with us last year. She is about to start her Higher Education journey in DCU to study for her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in International Relations. We hope you have a great time in DCU Aisling Rose and thank you for your contribution. It might help another student to make the leap towards Further Education in Cavan Institute. Aisling Rose - "There is an abundance of nice things I would love to express about my time at Cavan Institute. For me, it will remain one of the most beneficial, enlightening and rewarding years of my life. My course enabled me to gain a range of invaluable skills and a fountain of knowledge going forward on my educational journey. The Cultural and Heritage Studies course meant that a multitude of possibilities was opened to me, and I had the brilliant opportunity to learn about the origins and historical background of my home town, delve into and discover how important it is to preserve and protect Irish Heritage and all that it encompasses. I enhanced my French-speaking skills and so much more. The year also rewarded me with being able to acquire practical skills and learn how to incorporate referencing into my assignments. Completing assignments within the time constraints given did supply some stress I will admit, but with the ever-accommodating tutors there to support and guide you, and some self-belief and determination, achieving a high standard of work is possible. The tutors will go above and beyond and answer any queries you may have. I am truly glad that I went to Cavan Institute, and for anyone unsure about whether or not to pursue to a university course, Cavan Institute offers so many courses that will not only gain you a recognised educational achievement but allow many people to have their dreams of moving forward in their pursuit of education manifested into a reality. Anyone who studies the Cultural and Heritage Studies course will not regret it and I can testify to that. I will now be attending DCU for the 2019/2020 academic year, studying International Relations. My experience would not have been the same, if it had not been for some of the overly accommodating, compassionate and helpful tutors, including Patrick Cassidy and Margaret Tiernan among others. I will never forget what they did for me, nor the time I spent there." • Lana McGahern | Cavan Institute

Lana is from Longford and attended Moyne Community School. Lana studied 3D Design & Graphics in 2019-2020 at Cavan Institute. Lana is currently studying Interior Architecture and Design degree at ATU Sligo. Lana chose to go to Cavan Institute after her leaving cert because she was not fully sure what design discipline she wanted to study in college. Lana told us about her journey at Cavan Institute: "I went to the career days and open days at Cavan Institute during the summer and talked with career guidance who guided me in the direction of doing a general design course. This allowed me to study all areas of design and help me decide what area I wanted to go on to study. I think this really helped me see which areas I was best in and which areas I gravitated towards more, although I enjoyed learning new software's (AutoCAD, Photoshop & Solid Works) and also the practical elements of the course (furniture making etc.).I knew I most enjoyed doing AutoCAD. The modules were all helpful to me and all the tutors were really interested in the work you were doing. This was something I felt really made me enjoy my time in Cavan Institute, you had the independence of a college feeling and the work you were doing but help was there all the time whenever you needed it. I think what helped me most in Cavan Institute was how the tutors taught you the very basics and worked the way up to show you everything, this really allowed me to learn how assignments had to be done to the highest standard, even when it was something simple. The continuous help from all my tutors was beneficial to me, they helped you through all your assignments and guided you from the start to the end of the assignments. My course was all continuous assessment which I enjoyed, this broke up the year and did not have you focused on one exam at the end of the year and rather had you working through from the beginning to the end and build a portfolio of work. This helped you to enjoy the classes you were in and the work you were doing in class was going to be marked and graded so you really tried your best when doing it." • Megan Wilson | Cavan Institute

Megan from Lisgar, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 Early Childhood Care and Education at Cavan Institute. "During my first year studying Childcare Level 5 in Cavan Institute, I was overwhelmed with all the support I was given. The staff and people in Cavan Institute always made me feel like I belonged there and never made me feel like an outsider. Everyone did what they could do to help me which made me like the place even more than I already did. Everyone was always friendly and was able to lift the mood when I was having a bad day. One of my favourite experiences was around Christmas time. The canteen and lounge area was filled with Christmas music and decorated all over. The overall setting of the Institute made everyone that little more festive and joyous. The tutors always made sure that we knew what we were doing but then also knew how to keep us on our toes. My tutors knew how to make learning fun by incorporating quizzes and games into the curriculum. Another fond memory/experience I remember was, one of the first days I attended the Institute. The class was brought out to Breffni Park for team building exercises and to get to know everyone better. I can honestly say that it was so much fun and from that day I made some of my best/closest friends. I can honestly say I really enjoyed my time at Cavan Institute for my first year in college and cannot wait to return for my second year to study Early Childhood Care and Education Level 6" Megan Wilson Childcare Megan Wilson Childcare Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Shane Bell | Cavan Institute

Shane is from Ballybofey, Co Donegal. Shane studied Applied Science - Forensics at Cavan Institute. "After receiving my leaving certificate results in 2019, I was very disappointed. I had enough points for the course I wanted to do in the LYIT but I had failed Maths. I decided to do a level 5 QQI course in forensic science at Cavan Institute. Little did I know that a PLC (Post Leaving Cert) course was the best thing for me at that time. I made a lot of new friends along the way. When I went to Cavan Institute I had some information about forensics but not a lot. So that was a bit of a worry for me, but with help, I gradually learned more and more about forensics and science in general. When I was studying at Cavan Institute, I learned many important skills like getting used to Moodle and Teams. Learning to reference assignments properly was a huge asset. All universities and IoT's insist on academically referenced assignments so I will be confident starting college with this knowledge. I also got to do work experience in a laboratory in Donegal. It was in a creamery called Green Pastures. This was a big help as I learned things that I could use in the future. I got involved in many things while I was studying at Cavan Institute like the Open Days and when the 6th class students came in for science week. I was also involved in soccer for Cavan Institute. In March when Cavan Institute was closed because of Covid-19, we adjusted our learning to an online experience. I had to work hard as I really wanted to get an offer from LYIT. I was determined to get an offer so I worked hard from September. I was delighted when I received a Round 1 CAO offer from LYIT as I got accepted from my QQI grades that I received in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Digital and Security Forensics at Letterkenny Institute of Technology My advice for you is if you're not happy with your leaving cert results or you don't get an offer, don't panic, there are other routes. A PLC course could be the best option for you. With a PLC course, you get to enjoy what you are doing, you also get a certificate at the end of the year and if you work hard enough you can get an offer from the CAO for the college you want to study at. Finally, the best thing for me was, I got to meet new people and made great friends on my course."
