- Laura McClay | Cavan Institute
Laura McClay from Donegal studied Psychology & Social Science Level 5 in Cavan Institute and received a Round Zero offer for BSc in Psychology in University of Limerick. Laura tells us about her experience in Cavan Institute: “After not getting the high points needed for psychology in the leaving cert, I was very disappointed and unsure of my future. Following some research, I discovered that a PLC could help me get into college. I chose Cavan Institute in particular as I felt it would give me the best chance and I liked the sound of the modules. Having never properly been to Cavan, I was extremely nervous about my decision. However, I can now say that the decision to study here was the best one I could have made. Studying in Cavan Institute gave me the chance to experience living away from home for the first time. I gained independence and confidence. I always looked forward to the social aspect of college and I’ve made incredible friends along the way that I will definitely stay in contact with. On top of that, I also gained invaluable knowledge on research, IT, and the structuring of professional writing. The modules I studied solidified that psychology was the right path for me, and I learned many things that I will bring forward with me when I continue my studies. While the assignments were sometimes stressful, the tutors at Cavan Institute were always friendly and caring, and it’s clear that they put in great effort towards the success of their students. No matter the problem or query, there was always someone willing to help. As well as that, our tutors were always willing to have a laugh with us which kept our classes fun and made learning more interesting for us all. With the help of guidance counsellors Aoife and Orla, I reapplied to CAO as well as UCAS. I was lucky this time around to be offered my preferred choice which is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick. I received this offer in the Round Zero for QQI applicants which would not have been possible without completing the Level 5 at Cavan Institute. My year at Cavan institute was unforgettable and has been nothing but beneficial in terms of preparing me for university. “ We wish Laura the very best of luck with the rest of her studies. - Thomas Hanley | Cavan Institute
Thomas Hanley completed the Leaving Certificate at Virginia College in June 2015 and like so many Leaving Certificate students was unsure of which career path to choose. After considering a number of courses, Thomas chose the Motor Vehicle Maintenance QQI level 5 course at Cavan Institute. He believed the course would provide him with a number of progression opportunities either to an apprenticeship, QQI level 6 here at Cavan Institute or a Level 7 Degree in DIT. Thomas believes that the Motor Vehicle Maintenance course at Cavan Institute with its practical aspect also helps the student with other subjects such as electronics, motor vehicle theory, team working and auto electricity Thomas said "I enjoyed attending Cavan Institute and found the pace and content of classes ideal". Thomas completed the course in May 2016 and attained a Full Award with Distinction in all subjects. Thomas has now enrolled in DIT Bolton Street where he will study a level 7 Degree in Engineering. Thomas attributes his achievement in securing a place in DIT to the course content at Cavan Institute so much so that his younger brother Richard has now enrolled for Motor Vehicle Maintenance and has already started his studies here in Cavan Institute. - Dylan Hickey | Cavan Institute
Thanks for sharing your story Dylan. "When I originally finished my leaving cert in 2016 I unfortunately didn’t get the points that I wanted for my course and because I had no plan B, I decided to work for 3 years. In 2019, I chose to study Music and Sound Production in Cavan Institute as this was a subject area that I had a strong passion for. Studying at Cavan Institute was the best decision I ever made. Throughout my two years there I learned everything I could possibly need to go to higher education or even to join the world of work. My modules varied from theory elements, to practical elements of the music industry. We learned how to use industry standard equipment to a high level, I even gained a full qualification in Pro Tools which was included on top of my other modules and I also completed work experience which gave me insight into what life is like in the music industry outside of an academic institution. In terms of academic learning, I gained knowledge in how to complete assignments to a high standard and how to reference and complete thesis level papers. I have made some life-long friends during my time at Cavan Institute and thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience. On campus life and even virtual life during the pandemic felt great and I had all the help I could ever need from my tutors. I feel prepared to start the next step of my journey in a level 8 music production course, and would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anybody who has a passion for this subject."
