  • Paul McArdle | Cavan Institute

Paul from Cootehill, Co Cavan attended Beech Hill College, Monaghan. "I came to Cavan Institute in September 2016 to do the Nursing Studies course with the intention of trying to get to adult nursing in Dublin. I had left school at 15 without any education. After only two months at Cavan Institute I discovered it was possible to study adult nursing in the UK. I then applied for some universities in London and also in Dublin. With the results I gained at Cavan institute I was offered two universities in London and also Trinity College Dublin. I am 100 percent certain I would not be at London South Bank University today without having attended Cavan Institute last year. I am at present half way through my first year and doing my placements at one of the bigger hospitals in the centre of London. Doing the nursing studies course was the perfect stepping stone for my first year at London South Bank University. The first year at university is very similar to the year I had at Cavan Institute. I found all the Cavan Institute lecturers in the nursing studies course very helpful and they work tirelessly to help students gain places at different universities. This varies from helping with personal statements or advice on nursing matters as all the lecturers at Cavan Institute are fully experienced nurses with different nursing backgrounds. The nursing studies course is designed perfectly in all modules to help the nursing student progress to the next academic level. Also while at Cavan institute I was chairperson of the students committee. I found this a great way of meeting other students studying in other disciplines. Once again, I am very grateful to everyone at Cavan Institute for giving me the opportunity that I have now in front of me in the UK and my future career as a nurse." • Imani Tutu | Cavan Institute

Imani from Cavan town enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Pre-University Law course at Cavan Institute in September 2016. After successfully completing the course, he was offered a place in BCL (Hons) in UCC. "I was just completing my QQI level 4 award, ESOL programme (English for Speakers of Other Languages) 2015-2016. After completing that programme I did not know what was my next step, things like what course, what college were occurring in my head. Then I heard that Cavan Institute were holding an Open Day for the academic year 2016-2017. Without hesitation I attended. As I have always been interested in legal and political matters, I brightly foresaw my future after attending Cavan Institute's open day and then I realised that Cavan Institute offers a legal studies course (Pre-University Law) QQI level 5, I did not think twice. This course (Pre-University law) in Cavan Institute provided me a foundation knowledge of Irish law and Irish legal systems. During my time spent in Cavan Institute, I had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus Plus Programme (Erasmus plus programme allows student to undertake a work placement abroad). Cavan Institute and the Pre-University law course provided a great qualification which allowed me to secure a place in BCL (Hons) in the University College Course (UCC). Our tutors were very friendly and they were always willing to help. In Cavan Institute all student are treated equally no matter their backgrounds, race or gender. The students’ nights out were amazing, just wow…. If there were a level 8-degree course I would love to stay there for few more years. • Caoimhe Garvey | Cavan Institute

Caoimhe from Kells, Co Meath attended St Ciaran s Community School, Kells. Caoimhe enrolled on the QQI Level 5 course in Theatre Performance at Cavan Institute in September 2015. After successfully completing the course, she progressed to NUI Galway to study Performing Arts with Arts. "Hi - My name is Caoimhe Garvey. I am 19 years old. I am from Kells, Co Meath. I completed The Theatre Performance course when I was in Cavan Institute from 2015-2016. I am now studying Performing Arts with Arts in NUI Galway. My QQI points from Cavan Institute got me into NUI Galway. (Minimum 5 Distinctions). I believe that Cavan Institute helped me with my confidence. I would have never thought that I would be able to write short films and be able to get them out there. It gave me the confidence to not be afraid of trying new things, which I have. This year I hope to get my very first play on the stage and I hope to direct it. I wouldn't be doing that without Cavan Institute or the amazing talent I met there. The Institute has had an amazing impact upon my life. I loved my time in Cavan Institute so much. It made me take the first steps towards my future. I recommend it and have recommended it to so many people including my Mum, Shelley Garvey, who hopes to be joining you there next year. Thank you Cavan Institute for helping me achieve my success." • Aoife O'Flynn | Cavan Institute

Aoife from Ballyhaise, Co Cavan enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Hairdressing at Cavan Institute in September 2019. "Starting college as a mature student with children was very nerve wrecking, however Cavan Institute made the transition very relaxed and smooth. They helped with grant applications, childcare and even with my total lack of computer knowledge. There are a number of resources available in the college that are available to all students. The knowledge and experience I gained on the Hairdressing course last year I will carry with my throughout my life. It's not just about throwing a colour in or a quick trim you are taught everything from the hair structure to layer cuts, mens cuts, hair extensions and wigs to name but a few. Doing assignments was a whole new concept to me but with the help of fellow students and lecturers I ended up really enjoying them. My advice to anyone thinking of joining Cavan Institute is 'if in doubt go check it out'. There is a course for everyone. Last year I ended up picking up extra modules and doing make up and massage and I also did a gel nail course while juggling home life and the kids, all with the help and thanks of my family, friends and Cavan Institute." • Shane Bell | Cavan Institute

Shane is from Ballybofey, Co Donegal. Shane studied Applied Science - Forensics at Cavan Institute. "After receiving my leaving certificate results in 2019, I was very disappointed. I had enough points for the course I wanted to do in the LYIT but I had failed Maths. I decided to do a level 5 QQI course in forensic science at Cavan Institute. Little did I know that a PLC (Post Leaving Cert) course was the best thing for me at that time. I made a lot of new friends along the way. When I went to Cavan Institute I had some information about forensics but not a lot. So that was a bit of a worry for me, but with help, I gradually learned more and more about forensics and science in general. When I was studying at Cavan Institute, I learned many important skills like getting used to Moodle and Teams. Learning to reference assignments properly was a huge asset. All universities and IoT's insist on academically referenced assignments so I will be confident starting college with this knowledge. I also got to do work experience in a laboratory in Donegal. It was in a creamery called Green Pastures. This was a big help as I learned things that I could use in the future. I got involved in many things while I was studying at Cavan Institute like the Open Days and when the 6th class students came in for science week. I was also involved in soccer for Cavan Institute. In March when Cavan Institute was closed because of Covid-19, we adjusted our learning to an online experience. I had to work hard as I really wanted to get an offer from LYIT. I was determined to get an offer so I worked hard from September. I was delighted when I received a Round 1 CAO offer from LYIT as I got accepted from my QQI grades that I received in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Digital and Security Forensics at Letterkenny Institute of Technology My advice for you is if you're not happy with your leaving cert results or you don't get an offer, don't panic, there are other routes. A PLC course could be the best option for you. With a PLC course, you get to enjoy what you are doing, you also get a certificate at the end of the year and if you work hard enough you can get an offer from the CAO for the college you want to study at. Finally, the best thing for me was, I got to meet new people and made great friends on my course."
