- Sharon Monaghan | Cavan Institute
Sharon from Virginia, Co Cavan successfully completed QQI Level 5 Nail and Beauty Care course at Cavan Institute in May 2017. “I studied Nail and Beauty Care last year in Cavan Institute. This wasn’t my first time studying with Cavan Institute. I attended Cavan College in 2003 -2005, studying reception studies and advanced business and computer studies. I then started a job in Quinn Direct/Liberty Insurance where I worked for 11 years. Unfortunately, in 2016, I was made redundant from my job. In 2014 I completed a skin care, eye treatment and make-up evening course in Cavan Institute. I realised I had a passion for this type of work, so when I was made redundant I decided to further my education and return to college. I was keen to attend Cavan Institute because it isn’t too far from home and as I and my two sisters had previously attended here I knew it was an excellent college. I looked at the courses available and narrowed it down to Beauty Therapy or Nail and Beauty Care. The Beauty Therapy course is a two year course and I was not able to commit to this. I looked into the Nail and Beauty Care further and it seemed to be ideal. It’s a one year course, it covers nail technology which includes gel and acrylic nails which are very popular in salons. It also covers manicure, pedicure, waxing, massage, skin care, eye treatments and make up. All of which are the main treatments in a salon. I completed my work experience in December and as a result of my placement I was offered a full time job in May when the course is completed. I really enjoyed the course and the tutors are excellent. I am very happy with the course I choose to do and would recommend it to anyone. I'm now working 4 days in a salon in Kells. I do gel, acrylic, shellac, manicures, pedicure, waxing, tinting, massage, facials, microdermabrasion, make up and tanning. I am working here almost 2 years. I started here after I completed my work experience while studying for the course.” Sharon Monaghan Nail and Beauty Care Sharon Monaghan Nail and Beauty Care Student testimonials Previous Next

- Laura McClay | Cavan Institute
Laura McClay from Donegal studied Psychology & Social Science Level 5 in Cavan Institute and received a Round Zero offer for BSc in Psychology in University of Limerick. Laura tells us about her experience in Cavan Institute: “After not getting the high points needed for psychology in the leaving cert, I was very disappointed and unsure of my future. Following some research, I discovered that a PLC could help me get into college. I chose Cavan Institute in particular as I felt it would give me the best chance and I liked the sound of the modules. Having never properly been to Cavan, I was extremely nervous about my decision. However, I can now say that the decision to study here was the best one I could have made. Studying in Cavan Institute gave me the chance to experience living away from home for the first time. I gained independence and confidence. I always looked forward to the social aspect of college and I’ve made incredible friends along the way that I will definitely stay in contact with. On top of that, I also gained invaluable knowledge on research, IT, and the structuring of professional writing. The modules I studied solidified that psychology was the right path for me, and I learned many things that I will bring forward with me when I continue my studies. While the assignments were sometimes stressful, the tutors at Cavan Institute were always friendly and caring, and it’s clear that they put in great effort towards the success of their students. No matter the problem or query, there was always someone willing to help. As well as that, our tutors were always willing to have a laugh with us which kept our classes fun and made learning more interesting for us all. With the help of guidance counsellors Aoife and Orla, I reapplied to CAO as well as UCAS. I was lucky this time around to be offered my preferred choice which is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick. I received this offer in the Round Zero for QQI applicants which would not have been possible without completing the Level 5 at Cavan Institute. My year at Cavan institute was unforgettable and has been nothing but beneficial in terms of preparing me for university. “ We wish Laura the very best of luck with the rest of her studies. Conor from Kells, Co Meath attended St Ciaran s Community School, Kells. When I completed my Leaving Cert, An Garda Síochána was not recruiting. I attended Cavan Institute for two years studying Security Studies and Security Operations and Administrations. Completing both courses helped me build a strong foundation that assisted me in joining An Garda Síochána. The classes I attended at Cavan Institute prepared me for what was to come while training in Templemore. Currently I am a Trainee Garda and I am nearly finished phase one of my training. I could not have got this far without the help and guidance I received from the Security Studies team at Cavan Institute.' - Eli Mellor | Cavan Institute
Eli from Lough Gowna, Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Sports Therapy /Physiotherapy Studies at Cavan Institute and progressed to study Physiotherapy in Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, Holland. "Without Cavan Institute, I doubt that I would be in the position that I am in today. I knew that I would not get the points needed in the Leaving Cert to do a Physiotherapy Course in Ireland, so I used Cavan Institute as a stepping stone to get into a University abroad. The course itself in Cavan Institute is filled with interesting topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Injury Treatment and Prevention, Nutrition and Taping and Strapping. The knowledge that I attained in this course gave me a great start to University. I had a good foundation in the basics of Physiotherapy. Outside of the course, the college is perfect for educating people on how to prepare for life in University by allowing them to take on a more responsible role in their education. This includes completing assignments, practising self-study and meeting deadlines. If progressing into physiotherapy is not for you, there are still opportunities available to work within the sports sector. Before I started my physiotherapy degree, I gained knowledge during the Summer of 2018 by working with various football and soccer teams as a sports physio throughout the Cavan-Leitrim region, but mainly with Gowna GAA. It allowed me to develop my skills in taping and strapping, performing sports massage and using first aid as well. All of these skills are very desirable in the world of sport. My two years in Cavan Institute have allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a Physiotherapist and for that, I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute for anyone who wants to do Physiotherapy or become a Sports Physio." Casey Maher attended St. Clare’s College, Ballyjamesduff before enrolling on the QQI Level 5 Nursing Studies – Maternity Care course at Cavan Institute during 2019/20. She passed all modules on the course and used her QQI Level 5 award to progress to Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge to undertake the Midwifery BSc (Hons) Degree programme. When Casey was asked how her year at Cavan Institute she replied "it really gave me the chance to mature and realise that this was the profession I wanted to pursue. It also showed me the other options for becoming a midwife such as the UK (through UCAS). It gave me a good insight into the work required such as referencing to use now at third level. Cavan Institute was definitely the stepping stone I needed to get me here today." - Aoife O'Flynn | Cavan Institute
Aoife from Ballyhaise, Co Cavan enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Hairdressing at Cavan Institute in September 2019. "Starting college as a mature student with children was very nerve wrecking, however Cavan Institute made the transition very relaxed and smooth. They helped with grant applications, childcare and even with my total lack of computer knowledge. There are a number of resources available in the college that are available to all students. The knowledge and experience I gained on the Hairdressing course last year I will carry with my throughout my life. It's not just about throwing a colour in or a quick trim you are taught everything from the hair structure to layer cuts, mens cuts, hair extensions and wigs to name but a few. Doing assignments was a whole new concept to me but with the help of fellow students and lecturers I ended up really enjoying them. My advice to anyone thinking of joining Cavan Institute is 'if in doubt go check it out'. There is a course for everyone. Last year I ended up picking up extra modules and doing make up and massage and I also did a gel nail course while juggling home life and the kids, all with the help and thanks of my family, friends and Cavan Institute." - Fidelma Reilly | Cavan Institute
Fidelma Reilly from Drumalee, Cavan tells us about her move from the beauty therapy industry to our Reception and Frontline Office Management course and then employment in administration with HSE. "After being a Beauty Therapist for over 13 years, I decided to go back to education full time as the Beauty Industry was badly affected by the Covid19 Pandemic. I looked at many courses, both part time and full time, and settled on the Reception and Frontline Office Management course in Cavan Institute as I felt it would give me the skills I needed to gain employment as a Clerical Officer or in Administration. I was also drawn to the course due to it offering Manual & Computerised Bookkeeping, an area I had particular interest in as I had seen many jobs advertised throughout the pandemic in this area. I was nervous about returning to studying full time especially as some classes were taught online through Microsoft Teams. The tutors were very supportive and when the course transitioned to being completely taught online the tutors’ support was second to none. They are all very helpful, obliging and encouraging. They were always available for any question or query and the attention to the course work was exactly the same as it had been in the classroom setting. I completed this course in May 2021 and have gained employment as an Administrator in the HSE. I also have made a panel for a Clerical Officer position in the Civil Service. I feel this is due to the modules I completed on the Reception and Frontline Office Management Course in Cavan Institute. I hope to continue to study to gain my Level 6 in BookKeeping part time in the Institute. I would highly recommend this course as I feel it has opened a new door to a new career path for me." Fidelma outlines the many benefits that can be gained from retraining and up-skilling. Well done Fidelma and thanks for sharing your insights with us. We wish you continued success in your (new) career. Fidelma Reilly Office Administration and Technology Fidelma Reilly Office Administration and Technology Student testimonials Previous Next
