- Kostyantyn Shavrin | Cavan Institute
Kostyantyn is from Cavan and studied QQI Level 5 Tourism with Airline Studies course at Cavan Institute. "I am a graduate of Technological University Dublin holding a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Aviation Technology and Bachelor of Science (1st Class Honours) Degree in Transport Technology. I am currently employed as a Technical Project Manager within the Aircraft Redelivery Department in Santos Dumont, primarily focusing on the management of aircraft transitions between the airlines, lessors, and aircraft owners, technical records audit, aircraft physical inspections, and aircraft repossession at the time of airline default. Like every student out there when I completed my Leaving Certificate, I had no idea which course to choose and where I wanted to go and study further. The only interests I had were in aviation, business and languages. After spending some time searching the available courses that provided the opportunity to study all three, I chose to go to Cavan Institute and study Tourism. After completing the course, it gave me a clear understanding of where and how to move further using the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). After much thought and deliberation around CAO time, I went the aviation route which brought me to where I am now. The tourism course itself gives you a good overall understanding of tourism, heritage, aviation and customer service and prepares you to get work in all these areas. Basically, by choosing this course you can decide where you want to progress your career further if you are still not sure after completing you Leaving Cert, and even during the course while you are still studying. Sometimes it is hard to know what career to pursue after your Leaving Cert but doing this course gives you time to think about and research all your options. With so many courses out there to choose from in all the universities and institutes of technologies going to Cavan Institute to do this course gives you the time and space to do this. For anyone thinking of studying at Cavan Institute and further progressing your career, I would highly recommend completing the Tourism and Business course. Enjoy your studies." Alan McCormack - Bailieborough, Co Cavan. Alan is currently studying for his Professional Masters in Social Work in UCD. He is also working as a social care worker. "Without my time at Cavan Institute, I would not be doing what I am doing now. The friendly helpful learning environment at Cavan Institute set me on my way to becoming a Social Worker with a level 9 qualification. The level 8 honours degree secured me a place on the Social Work Masters programme and also a job in Social Care so that I could pay for that Masters qualification. It all started in Cavan Institute. Without the firm foundation I got there, I would still be stuck in a job I hated." Thanks for your input Alan. Hopefully you will inspire others to make a change and choose Cavan Institute to start a new path of discovery. - Laura Kellegher | Cavan Institute
Laura from Ballyconnell, Co Cavan attended Loreto College, Cavan. Laura was unsure what career path she wanted and decided to study QQI Level 5 in Multimedia and Web Development at Cavan Institute. Laura successfully completed this course in May 2014 and continued her studies in Multimedia at Dublin City University. "After completing the Leaving Cert in 2013, unsure of what career path I wanted to pursue, I deferred my CAO offer for a year and chose to take a year to study Multimedia and Web Development in Cavan Institute. I did this for two reasons; one being I always had an interest in working with computers, and by studying this course I would get the chance to learn valuable skills that would benefit me regardless of what career path I found myself on at the end of the year, and thought it would be particularly useful due to the rate at which technology and the use of social media are advancing at present. Secondly, I decided to take a year to study at Cavan Institute, to bridge the gap between leaving secondary school and starting a third level college. It allowed me to develop my independence and gave me an insight into what to expect when I when I did go on to study at third level, and the amount of work and self-motivation that was necessary. It also showed me the standard and expectations I would be required to meet. The Multimedia & Web Development course offers a wide range of modules from Image Processing and Film Production to Web Design and Work Experience, it really has something for everyone. It gives you a brilliant insight into the different areas of multimedia and what they involve. The understanding and knowledge I had of the Adobe Suite software, was invaluable to me in my first year at in college, as it meant that I already had a good grasp of what others were only learning about for the first time, which left it more enjoyable and less stressful for me. The tutors and staff provided an excellent support system and were always there to help me, offering advice and guidance whenever I had any questions or problems, no matter how big or small. I also found that the smaller class sizes were of huge benefit. This meant that not only were the classes tailored to our abilities and interests when possible, we were able to communicate with the tutors directly. We were more than just a number, they took the time to sit down with us and help us if we found something difficult, going through it step-by-step if necessary. At the end of the year, I decided to do a complete U-turn and change my CAO application form (from Social Studies!) and applied to study the Multimedia course at Dublin City University. I graduated in 2017 and am currently working within the Marketing industry, where no two days are the same! All of this wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to study at Cavan Institute, where I developed my skills and knowledge of Multimedia, while receiving the support and encouragement of the staff and tutors there."
