  • Ewelyn Oliveria Mac Uaid | Cavan Institute

"Before the course started, I had no idea of what was to come but as soon as classes started, I realised I was in the right place. The modules for this course were very beneficial; we got to learn about the development of children and what to expect from each age group. We learned how to prepare activities for infants and how they can be beneficial to their development. During the year I also got a chance to take part in different courses and workshops. Cavan Institute provided all students with first aid, manual handling and the building communications workshop which better prepared us to work in the Early Years Sector. When the year started, I was scared and did not think I was going to manage the course but everything was very manageable as the tutors helped, assisted and guided me throughout the whole course; making the experience more enjoyable and less stressful. At Cavan Institute, people come in with a dream and leave with a career. Going to college in Ireland was something I have always wanted but did not think was possible. From the very high rates to the long list of documents required, this dream seemed very difficult to reach but Cavan Institute made this dream reachable." Thank you for your very kind and inspirational words Ewelyn. We wish you all the best in your career. • Dylan Hickey | Cavan Institute

Thanks for sharing your story Dylan. "When I originally finished my leaving cert in 2016 I unfortunately didn’t get the points that I wanted for my course and because I had no plan B, I decided to work for 3 years. In 2019, I chose to study Music and Sound Production in Cavan Institute as this was a subject area that I had a strong passion for. Studying at Cavan Institute was the best decision I ever made. Throughout my two years there I learned everything I could possibly need to go to higher education or even to join the world of work. My modules varied from theory elements, to practical elements of the music industry. We learned how to use industry standard equipment to a high level, I even gained a full qualification in Pro Tools which was included on top of my other modules and I also completed work experience which gave me insight into what life is like in the music industry outside of an academic institution. In terms of academic learning, I gained knowledge in how to complete assignments to a high standard and how to reference and complete thesis level papers. I have made some life-long friends during my time at Cavan Institute and thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience. On campus life and even virtual life during the pandemic felt great and I had all the help I could ever need from my tutors. I feel prepared to start the next step of my journey in a level 8 music production course, and would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anybody who has a passion for this subject." • Orla O'Brien | Cavan Institute

Orla from Edenticlare, attended Loreto College, Cavan. "I completed the level 5 course in Science and Laboratory Techniques in 2020. I decided to go to Cavan Institute to prepare myself for University. As I was living at home I could work part-time as well as do my studies, this gave me an opportunity to save up before moving to college. Studying science and laboratory techniques at Cavan Institute gave me an excellent grasp on the essential skills that I will need in university. As a result of completing this course, I have learned the importance of completing assignments on time, submitting them online and referencing researched information correctly. I loved how the modules in this course had a balance between practical and theory classes. This helped to keep me engaged and gave me a deeper understanding of the topics. We went on field trips throughout the year. I enjoyed visiting Maynooth University to do an investigation on the effect of TB on milk production in cows. I found it very interesting. I would like to thank my class tutor Nora Hennessey, for her continuous support, encouragement, and guidance all year. Without her, I would not have got my 10 distinctions. I had the privilege of being selected to travel to Tartu, Estonia on an Erasmus trip. I worked in a veterinary surgical practice and a milk analysis laboratory. I got the opportunity to experience the Estonian culture which certainly was one of the highlights of the year. I would like to thank Dawn Graham for her hard work organising this opportunity. I was part of the student council which helped organise multiple events for the college community throughout the year. I would like to thank Anne Traynor for her continuous support for events all year. She has all students’ best interests at heart. As a result of completing my year in Cavan Institute, I am going on to study a Masters in Diagnostic Radiography in Robert Gordon University Aberdeen. I am grateful for all the support from staff members in Cavan Institute for helping me achieve this. I would highly recommend the Science and Laboratory Techniques course to anyone who is interested in progressing to a third level course in a science-related discipline. It gives you an excellent foundation for core science subjects and teaches you the essential skills that you will need in college. As an aside, I applied to all 3 Scottish Universities and Ulster University and received an offer in all 4. I also received a Round 0 offer to study Clinical Measurement Science in TUD all thanks to my year in Cavan Institute."
