He attended ColAiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Music and Sound Production course. “After receiving my Leaving Cert results in 2019 I was very disappointed with my results as I just missed out on my CAO course by 6 points as I wanted to go to Maynooth University. I knew that I wanted to study music in college, but I didn’t want to repeat my leaving cert. So, I decided to do a level 5 QQI/Btec course in music and sound production here in Cavan Institute. Little did I know that doing a PLC in Cavan Institute was the best thing for me at that time, as I made a lot of new friends who were interested in music as much as I am. In my course, I got to learn the piano and I improved on my music theory also. When I went to Cavan Institute I had little to no knowledge about music production nor music technology which was a worry for me at first but with the help of my tutors and my fellow colleagues I learned so much about the production/technology side of the course. Studying in Cavan Institute has taught me very important skills for college such as getting used to ‘Moodle’, academic referencing in assignments was very important for me to learn as I'll always have to do that in college. I also learned how to take in information in a college unlike secondary school, college has a different way of teaching you the information you need for your assignments/exams. I also got to do work experience in a recording studio in Sligo called ‘Electric Eye Recording Studio’. This was a big benefit for me as I learn skills in the recording studio that will help me for my career in the future and the information that I learned about the recording studio will help me understand future topics that will come up in my studies. I got involved in the music society in Cavan Institute which gave me more confidence when performing as I got to play at different events such as the ‘Cavan Institute Song Contest’. I was the interval act and I got to meet an Irish Eurovision Winner ‘Charlie McGettigan’ that was awesome! I was also involved in the GAA for Cavan Institute. We had an excellent season winning the All Ireland Shield. When our college closed to due Covid-19, our exams were changed to assignments. I had to work hard on them so that I get the chance to get an offer from Maynooth University. I was really determined to get an offer from Maynooth University, so I had worked hard since September. Once I finished my final assessments for college, I had to wait until August to see if I got an offer from Maynooth University by the CAO. I was delighted that I received a ‘Round 0’ offer from Maynooth as they accepted me from my QQI grades here in Cavan Institute. Now I will be studying Music and Music Technology at Maynooth University. My advice if you're not happy with your Leaving Cert results, and that you know what you want to study, a PLC course is right for you. The modules for this course were very beneficial; we got to learn about the development of children and what to expect from each age group. We learned how to prepare activities for infants and how they can be beneficial to their development. During the year I also got a chance to take part in different courses and workshops. After successfully completing the course, he was offered a place in BCL (Hons) in UCC. "I was just completing my QQI level 4 award, ESOL programme (English for Speakers of Other Languages) 2015-2016. After completing that programme I did not know what was my next step, things like what course, what college were occurring in my head. Then I heard that Cavan Institute were holding an Open Day for the academic year 2016-2017. Without hesitation I attended. As I have always been interested in legal and political matters, I brightly foresaw my future after attending Cavan Institute's open day and then I realised that Cavan Institute offers a legal studies course (Pre-University Law) QQI level 5, I did not think twice. This course (Pre-University law) in Cavan Institute provided me a foundation knowledge of Irish law and Irish legal systems. During my time spent in Cavan Institute, I had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus Plus Programme (Erasmus plus programme allows student to undertake a work placement abroad). Cavan Institute and the Pre-University law course provided a great qualification which allowed me to secure a place in BCL (Hons) in the University College Course (UCC). Our tutors were very friendly and they were always willing to help. In Cavan Institute all student are treated equally no matter their backgrounds, race or gender. Early Learning and Care with Special Needs Assisting QQI Level 5 Course Code CJ Major Award Code 5M21473 Apply Now About This Course The Early Learning Care with Special Needs Assisting course equips the student with the knowledge, experience and practical skills necessary to work in a range of childcare and early years services, promoting and supporting the holistic needs of children 0-6 years. This award also provides the student with the opportunity to progress into the Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care and into higher education and training. Students must complete 150 hours of professional practice placement in a minimum of two Tusla approved settings: (1) working directly with children aged between 0- 2 years 8 months, and (2) working directly with children aged 2 years 8 months – 6 years. Students who are registered on the ELC programmes and undertake a placement relating to children will require National Garda Vetting and Police Vetting if applicable. NB – It is important to note that the six mandatory programme modules are not accredited awards in their own right. The level 5 QQI certificate in Early Learning and Care will be awarded on successful completion of all the 6 mandatory programme modules. The Level 5 QQI Component award 5N1786 in Special Needs Assisting will be awarded on successful completion of the module Special Needs Assisting. Entry Requirements Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or QQI Level 4 Award. Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements. Applicants whose first language is not English require proficiency at the B2 standard on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) level.
