  • Emma Dowd | Cavan Institute

Emma came to Cavan Institute to study on our Professional Cookery course. Emma has a passion for cooking and she wants to be a chef. She is currently working in Lisgrey House in Virginia, Cavan. Emma told us that "after going to an open day in Cavan Institute, I got an insight into what I would be doing on the professional cookery course. The course helped me build my confidence in my cooking skills as well as my multitasking and organizational skills which are important for being a chef. The course also helped me as I completed 40 days of work experience in a hotel kitchen. This gave me an insight into how a professional kitchen was run and I would have never gotten this experience only for the course. The highlight of the year for me was the Spring meal event that my class and I organised. We planned the event ourselves from drafting up menus to cooking the dishes and I really enjoyed the process as it allowed me to be creative. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Cavan Institute and would recommend the Professional Cookery course to anyone who has a passion for cooking and wants to improve their skills in the kitchen. I also had the opportunity to travel to France with Leargas and Erasmus+ which was an amazing experience to work in a French kitchen. I can thoroughly say that the experience was amazing." • Edel Hennessy | Cavan Institute

Edel Hennessy from Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan tells us how Cavan Institute helped her on her way. "When I completed my leaving certificate in St Clares, Ballyjamesduff, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I got accepted to DIT for sports but I opted for sports in Cavan institute which I completed, but didn't continue the sports. Then in September 2013 I started my Hairdressing year 1. Each module was covered in great detail and gave me the love to stay at hairdressing, developing skills I never knew I had. Without the excellent teachers, with great ambition and passion, to help each student to obtain their highest ability, I wouldn't be the hairstylist I am now. During my advanced course I worked part time in a hairdressing salon which lead to full time employment. I felt I was ready to make the jump and open my own hairdressing salon in October 2018. The salon is situated on Main Street Cavan "LUXE the experience". I am always up-skilling with the best in the business and I will continue to bring the best to Cavan. Thank you to my teachers Clare & Katie for helping me through the 4 years in Cavan Institute." Edel Hennessy Hairdressing Edel Hennessy Hairdressing Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Karla Finnegan | Cavan Institute

Karla, from Cavan Town, studied on our Makeup Artistry course last year. Karla shares her experience with us below. "My experience at Cavan Institute was absolutely amazing. Although it is quite a difficult and heavy course, it was extremely rewarding. I always had a passion for makeup from a very young age and had always dreamed of being a makeup artist. I had researched so many makeup courses around Ireland, most of them being private, which were extremely expensive and quite far away from home. I knew since I was in my 3rd year of secondary school that I wanted to have an ITEC diploma. When I saw Cavan institute offered it, I knew it would be the course for me. While in 6th year in secondary school I attended the open day where I first met my amazing tutor Patricia. Patricia helped me so much throughout the year and I’m extremely grateful to have had such a brilliant, kind and caring tutor. Patricia puts so much time and energy into every single student and always pushed us to do our best. Patricia was always there to help with anything we were struggling with and guide us along the way. Since completing my ITEC diploma, I have opened up a makeup studio and I cannot begin to describe the joy it brings me to be working and doing what I love and have so much passion for. It is the most amazing feeling in the world." Karla Finnegan Make-up Artistry Karla Finnegan Make-up Artistry Student testimonials Previous Next

  • Dylan Hickey | Cavan Institute

Thanks for sharing your story Dylan. "When I originally finished my leaving cert in 2016 I unfortunately didn’t get the points that I wanted for my course and because I had no plan B, I decided to work for 3 years. In 2019, I chose to study Music and Sound Production in Cavan Institute as this was a subject area that I had a strong passion for. Studying at Cavan Institute was the best decision I ever made. Throughout my two years there I learned everything I could possibly need to go to higher education or even to join the world of work. My modules varied from theory elements, to practical elements of the music industry. We learned how to use industry standard equipment to a high level, I even gained a full qualification in Pro Tools which was included on top of my other modules and I also completed work experience which gave me insight into what life is like in the music industry outside of an academic institution. In terms of academic learning, I gained knowledge in how to complete assignments to a high standard and how to reference and complete thesis level papers. I have made some life-long friends during my time at Cavan Institute and thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience. On campus life and even virtual life during the pandemic felt great and I had all the help I could ever need from my tutors. I feel prepared to start the next step of my journey in a level 8 music production course, and would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anybody who has a passion for this subject." • Amy Smyth | Cavan Institute

Amy attended Bailieborough Community School before joining Cavan Institute to study Make-up Artistry. Amy is currently working part-time as a freelance make-up artist, as well as a resident make-up artist at LUXE - The Experience Cavan. "My experience as a student of Cavan Institute can be described as many things – challenging, demanding, even difficult. While these words might sound a little negative, but I’m so grateful to have experienced these words. Where I met challenges, which may have been demanding and difficult, I was guided through them with care and expertise by my tutors, and the outcomes were always worth the intensive labour that you invested. Personally, I found the more effort, passion, creativity and time I invested in my projects and assignments, the more experienced I gained. Where I stumbled, I may have learned new tricks, a new style, technique, method or gained a better outlook. There were always resources made available to me to help me along, and if I needed help, it was always offered. Ultimately, I achieved everything I had set out to in terms of qualifications, having left with an ITEC Diploma in Make-Up Artistry as well as multiple QQI awards in my modules on the course. However, I also left with a better understanding of what it means to be passionate in your career and loving the work you do, rather than just having a job. I now have the job I’ve always dreamed of and love waking up to do it every day, going to sleep every night feeling rewarded and proud. I feel completely prepared for every aspect of it, and for any obstacle I’m faced with. I’m excited to keep building my career with the tools and opportunities Cavan Institute has given me."
