- Emma Carolan | Cavan Institute
"I choose Cavan Institute because it was convenient to me and I had heard good reports about the college and tutors. During my second year at Cavan Institute, studying Early Childhood Care and Education Year 2 , I received great assistance and support from my tutors. Work experience was very beneficial to me as it allowed me to gain an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers. I also learned about the day to day running of a childcare setting. As a result of my work experience, I have been given a full-time position in my work placement childcare setting. I developed skills in assignment presentation as well as communication skills. Cavan Institute is a great learning environment, but there is also a good social aspect of it. There were numerous days in which events were arranged for us to attend e.g. Mental Health Awareness, Well Being etc." We wish you all the best in your career Emma and thanks for sharing your story with us. - Aine Smith | Cavan Institute
Aine Smith from Cootehill, Co. Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Childcare course in Cavan Institute and progressed to study BA Hons Degree in Dundalk Institute of Technology. "When I completed my leaving certificate I had no idea what I wanted to do. So, I opted to do a year in Cavan Institute in Childcare, this then progressed on to two years. The modules covered were excellent if you wanted to gain an insight into the early childhood sector in particular, child development and early childhood curriculum these elements were interesting but also are fundamental in the work place today. Each of the modules covered in the course give you the basis and confidence to go on to work in the sector but equally to progress in your studies. I developed skills in assignment presentation but equally in time management and meeting deadlines. The variety and consistency of work placements allowed us, as students, in Cavan Institute to get a taste of what it is like to work in the early years sector. I attended placement in Halle, in Germany as part of my studies with Cavan Institute, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. This experience allowed me to get a flavour of what it is like to work in the early years sector in an international placement. It allowed me to broaden my horizon as to the various job opportunities there are abroad. This childcare course at Cavan Institute really emphasises the importance of early year’s educators to have a good knowledge of child development, but also to provide children with rich learning experiences. As a student you are encouraged to share any thoughts and ideas in relation to each module and this is extremely important as it also broadens your knowledge. It is true to say that I would not have gone on to complete my BA Hons Degree in Dundalk Institute of Technology only for the supportive tutors that I had in Cavan Institute. I am currently working full time as a preschool leader in a prestigious early years' service in Cavan. As the early years sector continues to strive towards quality provision, it is essential to have quality trained staff. At present I am engaging in continual professional development in a Leadership for Inclusion programme (LINC Programme) which is designed to facilitate early years’ educators to promote the inclusion of children with additional needs." It was a brilliant course that covered plenty of areas in the motor industry and in doing this course it helped me to decide that motor mechanics is definitely for me. The tutors were all extremely helpful and went above and beyond to ensure you do well. It helped build my confidence and knowledge in the motor industry and opened plenty of doors for me. I am now doing an apprenticeship and delighted I attended this course as it changed my life for the better." - Monika Cerekaviciute | Cavan Institute
"There was no doubt in my mind about choosing to enrol in Cavan Institute after seeing the successes my friends have reached in their careers by attending this college. It was the best decision I had ever made to attend here, not only because I got to expand my knowledge and earn a qualification in doing so, but also because I made friends for life who share similar interests as myself. I have my class tutors to thank as they were extremely supportive throughout the year and always offered a helping hand, even if I just needed a chat, or some guidance with an assignment. Every single module that this course delivered was extremely beneficial. I found that having work experience as a module was especially useful because I got hands-on experience in this field of work and will now feel confident seeking full-time employment once I complete my Level 6 in Early Childhood Care and Education next year. I am also very delighted to say that I managed to get a summer job in the creche I did my work experience in. If there was no work experience module, I would not have gotten this amazing opportunity. I know just how nerve-wrecking it can be having to sit a big exam at the end of the year, containing questions about everything you’ve had to take in from September until May. In that situation, a lot of us would crack under pressure and underperform, affecting our final grades. Luckily, Cavan Institute takes a different approach to assess their students, called continuous assessment. I found this method of assessment to be much more effective than any other form of assessment. Having guest speakers come in and talk to us students was very advantageous as it gave us a greater insight as to what childcare and special needs assisting entails. We also got to do a Patient Moving and Handling course, first aid course, and a Lámh course. These courses are very beneficial to us students and I’m incredibly grateful that the college, along with my class tutors, provided us with an opportunity to complete them. I am so happy I chose to enrol in Cavan Institute and I cannot wait to return this September to complete Level 6 Early Childhood Care and Education." Wishing you all the very best in your studies and career Monika. - Natasha McKenna | Cavan Institute
Natasha is from Ballinagh, Cavan. She attended Breifne College, Cavan. Natasha is currently studying Business Studies (Level 8) in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Natasha tells us how studying at Cavan Institute helped her on her educational journey. "I first decided to go to Cavan Institute as I was young leaving secondary school (17) and still had no idea what course I wanted to study. I decided on business studies as it was something I had not done before at all and would be completely different to any subjects I had taken in school. When I was studying at Cavan institute, I gained a lot of skills that have stood to me today. These skills have been very beneficial to me studying on the Bachelor (Hons) of Business degree in DkIT. These skills included being able to stick to deadlines, completing continuous assessments, being able to use different computer software packages such as Excel and Sage. Being able to reference my work was also a great advantage to my current course. I completed work experience while studying at Cavan Institute. This helped me gain a lot more confidence working with the public and with other people. The tutors at Cavan Institute gave great support and guidance and really helped every student in any way they could. I gained my full distinction award in QQI L5 Business and used this to apply to DKIT through the CAO Higher Education Links Scheme. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cavan institute I made great friends and I would really recommend completing a PLC course before attending college not only are the skills you learn great but it’ll help students decide whether or not the course they want to do is really for them.
