I knew that I wanted to study music in college, but I didn’t want to repeat my leaving cert. So, I decided to do a level 5 QQI/Btec course in music and sound production here in Cavan Institute. Little did I know that doing a PLC in Cavan Institute was the best thing for me at that time, as I made a lot of new friends who were interested in music as much as I am. In my course, I got to learn the piano and I improved on my music theory also. When I went to Cavan Institute I had little to no knowledge about music production nor music technology which was a worry for me at first but with the help of my tutors and my fellow colleagues I learned so much about the production/technology side of the course. Studying in Cavan Institute has taught me very important skills for college such as getting used to ‘Moodle’, academic referencing in assignments was very important for me to learn as I'll always have to do that in college. "During my first year studying Childcare Level 5 in Cavan Institute, I was overwhelmed with all the support I was given. The staff and people in Cavan Institute always made me feel like I belonged there and never made me feel like an outsider. Everyone did what they could do to help me which made me like the place even more than I already did. Everyone was always friendly and was able to lift the mood when I was having a bad day. One of my favourite experiences was around Christmas time. The canteen and lounge area was filled with Christmas music and decorated all over. The overall setting of the Institute made everyone that little more festive and joyous. The tutors always made sure that we knew what we were doing but then also knew how to keep us on our toes. My tutors knew how to make learning fun by incorporating quizzes and games into the curriculum. Another fond memory/experience I remember was, one of the first days I attended the Institute. One of the best decisions I made recently was returning to full time education. The staff and tutors were amazing in their support and encouragement on my journey back to education. I am delighted I took the plunge and went back to college. Work experience is a very useful part of the course and can be in a local business. I was lucky enough to take part in the Erasmus programme where I spent my two weeks work experience in Slovenia. I worked in a company which was involved in the development of local and regional projects. My job was to review documents and reports that were translated into English and check and correct grammar errors. I found it very beneficial as it was my first taste of “real office work” for a long time.
