  • Conor Finegan | Cavan Institute

Conor from Kells, Co Meath attended St Ciaran s Community School, Kells. When I completed my Leaving Cert, An Garda Síochána was not recruiting. I attended Cavan Institute for two years studying Security Studies and Security Operations and Administrations. Completing both courses helped me build a strong foundation that assisted me in joining An Garda Síochána. The classes I attended at Cavan Institute prepared me for what was to come while training in Templemore. Currently I am a Trainee Garda and I am nearly finished phase one of my training. I could not have got this far without the help and guidance I received from the Security Studies team at Cavan Institute.' • Eli Mellor | Cavan Institute

Eli from Lough Gowna, Cavan studied year 1 and year 2 of the Sports Therapy /Physiotherapy Studies at Cavan Institute and progressed to study Physiotherapy in Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, Holland. "Without Cavan Institute, I doubt that I would be in the position that I am in today. I knew that I would not get the points needed in the Leaving Cert to do a Physiotherapy Course in Ireland, so I used Cavan Institute as a stepping stone to get into a University abroad. The course itself in Cavan Institute is filled with interesting topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Injury Treatment and Prevention, Nutrition and Taping and Strapping. The knowledge that I attained in this course gave me a great start to University. I had a good foundation in the basics of Physiotherapy. Outside of the course, the college is perfect for educating people on how to prepare for life in University by allowing them to take on a more responsible role in their education. This includes completing assignments, practising self-study and meeting deadlines. If progressing into physiotherapy is not for you, there are still opportunities available to work within the sports sector. Before I started my physiotherapy degree, I gained knowledge during the Summer of 2018 by working with various football and soccer teams as a sports physio throughout the Cavan-Leitrim region, but mainly with Gowna GAA. It allowed me to develop my skills in taping and strapping, performing sports massage and using first aid as well. All of these skills are very desirable in the world of sport. My two years in Cavan Institute have allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a Physiotherapist and for that, I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute for anyone who wants to do Physiotherapy or become a Sports Physio." It also showed me the other options for becoming a midwife such as the UK (through UCAS). It gave me a good insight into the work required such as referencing to use now at third level. • Aoife O'Flynn | Cavan Institute

Aoife from Ballyhaise, Co Cavan enrolled on the QQI Level 5 Hairdressing at Cavan Institute in September 2019. "Starting college as a mature student with children was very nerve wrecking, however Cavan Institute made the transition very relaxed and smooth. They helped with grant applications, childcare and even with my total lack of computer knowledge. There are a number of resources available in the college that are available to all students. The knowledge and experience I gained on the Hairdressing course last year I will carry with my throughout my life. It's not just about throwing a colour in or a quick trim you are taught everything from the hair structure to layer cuts, mens cuts, hair extensions and wigs to name but a few. Doing assignments was a whole new concept to me but with the help of fellow students and lecturers I ended up really enjoying them. My advice to anyone thinking of joining Cavan Institute is 'if in doubt go check it out'. There is a course for everyone. Last year I ended up picking up extra modules and doing make up and massage and I also did a gel nail course while juggling home life and the kids, all with the help and thanks of my family, friends and Cavan Institute." • Fidelma Reilly | Cavan Institute

Fidelma Reilly from Drumalee, Cavan tells us about her move from the beauty therapy industry to our Reception and Frontline Office Management course and then employment in administration with HSE. "After being a Beauty Therapist for over 13 years, I decided to go back to education full time as the Beauty Industry was badly affected by the Covid19 Pandemic. I looked at many courses, both part time and full time, and settled on the Reception and Frontline Office Management course in Cavan Institute as I felt it would give me the skills I needed to gain employment as a Clerical Officer or in Administration. I was also drawn to the course due to it offering Manual & Computerised Bookkeeping, an area I had particular interest in as I had seen many jobs advertised throughout the pandemic in this area. I was nervous about returning to studying full time especially as some classes were taught online through Microsoft Teams. The tutors were very supportive and when the course transitioned to being completely taught online the tutors’ support was second to none. They are all very helpful, obliging and encouraging. They were always available for any question or query and the attention to the course work was exactly the same as it had been in the classroom setting. I completed this course in May 2021 and have gained employment as an Administrator in the HSE. I also have made a panel for a Clerical Officer position in the Civil Service. I feel this is due to the modules I completed on the Reception and Frontline Office Management Course in Cavan Institute. I hope to continue to study to gain my Level 6 in BookKeeping part time in the Institute. I would highly recommend this course as I feel it has opened a new door to a new career path for me." Fidelma outlines the many benefits that can be gained from retraining and up-skilling. Well done Fidelma and thanks for sharing your insights with us. We wish you continued success in your (new) career. Fidelma Reilly Office Administration and Technology Fidelma Reilly Office Administration and Technology Student testimonials Previous Next
