  • Dylan Hickey | Cavan Institute

Thanks for sharing your story Dylan. "When I originally finished my leaving cert in 2016 I unfortunately didn’t get the points that I wanted for my course and because I had no plan B, I decided to work for 3 years. In 2019, I chose to study Music and Sound Production in Cavan Institute as this was a subject area that I had a strong passion for. Studying at Cavan Institute was the best decision I ever made. Throughout my two years there I learned everything I could possibly need to go to higher education or even to join the world of work. My modules varied from theory elements, to practical elements of the music industry. We learned how to use industry standard equipment to a high level, I even gained a full qualification in Pro Tools which was included on top of my other modules and I also completed work experience which gave me insight into what life is like in the music industry outside of an academic institution. In terms of academic learning, I gained knowledge in how to complete assignments to a high standard and how to reference and complete thesis level papers. I have made some life-long friends during my time at Cavan Institute and thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience. On campus life and even virtual life during the pandemic felt great and I had all the help I could ever need from my tutors. I feel prepared to start the next step of my journey in a level 8 music production course, and would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anybody who has a passion for this subject." • Amy Smyth | Cavan Institute

Amy attended Bailieborough Community School before joining Cavan Institute to study Make-up Artistry. Amy is currently working part-time as a freelance make-up artist, as well as a resident make-up artist at LUXE - The Experience Cavan. "My experience as a student of Cavan Institute can be described as many things – challenging, demanding, even difficult. While these words might sound a little negative, but I’m so grateful to have experienced these words. Where I met challenges, which may have been demanding and difficult, I was guided through them with care and expertise by my tutors, and the outcomes were always worth the intensive labour that you invested. Personally, I found the more effort, passion, creativity and time I invested in my projects and assignments, the more experienced I gained. Where I stumbled, I may have learned new tricks, a new style, technique, method or gained a better outlook. There were always resources made available to me to help me along, and if I needed help, it was always offered. Ultimately, I achieved everything I had set out to in terms of qualifications, having left with an ITEC Diploma in Make-Up Artistry as well as multiple QQI awards in my modules on the course. However, I also left with a better understanding of what it means to be passionate in your career and loving the work you do, rather than just having a job. I now have the job I’ve always dreamed of and love waking up to do it every day, going to sleep every night feeling rewarded and proud. I feel completely prepared for every aspect of it, and for any obstacle I’m faced with. I’m excited to keep building my career with the tools and opportunities Cavan Institute has given me." "Without my time at Cavan Institute, I would not be doing what I am doing now. The friendly helpful learning environment at Cavan Institute set me on my way to becoming a Social Worker with a level 9 qualification. The level 8 honours degree secured me a place on the Social Work Masters programme and also a job in Social Care so that I could pay for that Masters qualification. It all started in Cavan Institute. Without the firm foundation I got there, I would still be stuck in a job I hated." Thanks for your input Alan.
