  • Mandy Freehill | Cavan Institute

Mandy Freehill studied Office Administration and Technology at Cavan Institute. Here is Mandy's story: "I decided I wanted to leave the retail sector. I felt I needed a new challenge and a change in direction. I enjoyed working in an office environment prior to retail but knew that I would need to upskill. I applied for the Office Administration and Technology course at Cavan Institute. As a mature student, I can’t recommend Cavan Institute highly enough. One of the best decisions I made recently was returning to full time education. The staff and tutors were amazing in their support and encouragement on my journey back to education. I am delighted I took the plunge and went back to college. Work experience is a very useful part of the course and can be in a local business. I was lucky enough to take part in the Erasmus programme where I spent my two weeks work experience in Slovenia. I worked in a company which was involved in the development of local and regional projects. My job was to review documents and reports that were translated into English and check and correct grammar errors. I found it very beneficial as it was my first taste of “real office work” for a long time. I would strongly advise and encourage anyone, especially mature people or people who have been out of education for a while to go back and give it a go! There are many supports available to you in Cavan Institute and a dedicated team of staff and teachers on hand to guide and help you on your way. As a result of graduating from the Office Administration and Technology course, I am now working as a secretary at a local school." We wish you continued success Mandy. Caoimhe from Virginia, Co Cavan attended Virginia College and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete Health Service Skills - Occupational Therapy course in May 2016. "After completing my Leaving Cert I was unsure of what path to take or what career to pursue. Cavan Institute gave me the opportunity and confidence I needed to progress. By doing this course in Cavan I was given a better insight into the role of an Occupational Therapist in the lives of people with physical or mental disabilities. • Philip McKeon | Cavan Institute

Philip from Aughnacliffe, Co Longford attended Moyne Community School and progressed to Cavan Institute to undertake and complete the QQI Level 5 Architectural Technology course in May 2019. Philip decided to continue his studies at Cavan Institute and enrolled on the Level 6 Renewable and Engineering Technology course. "When I finished my leaving cert I went straight to college in Galway and realised that the high numbers in lectures and the intense nature of college wasn’t suited to me. I then made the decision to leave and join a course in Cavan Institute which was closer to home and also provided me with far more tuition than any IT or university could ever provide. I always had a keen interest in the built environment and CAD so I decided to do Architectural Technology Level 5. The skills and work that I completed felt like they were way out of my depth before I started but through a lot of 1 on 1 guidance with tutors and also making themselves available for any questions whether through email or phone, I found that this was the best experience I could have had post leaving cert. In the space of a year I managed to complete modules containing AutoCAD, Revit and Photoshop while also completing standard modules such as communications and maths. After year one, I decided to branch off and study Renewable and Engineering Technology. This course was brilliant for me as it was a three day a week course. The course left the opportunity for work experience which I believe is the best way to learn an industry or trade. I would definitely recommend Cavan Institute to anyone, whether if you are not sure what you want to do or if you’re interested in a pre university course, the guidance of the tutors and opportunities such as work experience in my case led to a job. I would like to thanks my tutors, Shane McCabe and Stacey Gardiner as they were very helpful throughout my time in Cavan Institute and has paved my way from school to the working life." • Grace Irwin | Cavan Institute

Grace from Magheravelly, Shannock, Co. Fermanagh studied year 1 and year 2 of the Accounting Technician - Computerised Accounting course at Cavan Institute. "Prior to studying at Cavan Institute, I completed a BSc in Architecture in Queens University Belfast. However, given the lack of local work in the industry, I ended up working in a local shop for a year and then decided to head back to the books and change my direction of career to Accountancy. Given the vast change in direction in career path I was nervous about starting again but, the staff in Cavan Institute made this very easy. Each Tutor put every ounce of passion they had for their subjects into the classes and were more than helpful with tailoring the classes to suit the students’ needs and not just focused on getting through the syllabus. With a lot of hard work and dedication I am pleased to say I completed the 2 year full time course in Cavan Institute and finished with a Distinction. As I already had a degree, there was no help financially for me to go back to college so I started baking cakes. Through the power of Facebook, word of mouth and recommendations the little enterprise I set up was soon known near and far. It was tough to get the balance right between books and cakes sometimes, but I believe this has made me the person I am today, strong willed, determined and will put everything into the job in hand. It taught me the need and importance of being organised which is a big asset to have when in the work place. During the 2 years at Cavan the course schedule allows for 1 day of work experience and again the tutors were ever so helpful in making sure everyone who wanted to gain experience got a job. I am delighted to say I got work experience in M O’Toole Accountants Ltd. I worked one day a week up until Christmas when they kindly offered me a full time job for when I finished my exams in May. The experience I gained from this placement was invaluable to the course; I found it really helped relate the content from the class to real world situations and also to bring a real situation into the classroom to help understand the course. I am now a full time member of the team at M O’Toole Accountants Ltd and love every minute of it. I hope to continue my accounting journey with CPA. With the option to do this online it means I can continue working while studying. Cavan Institute was the stepping stone I needed to get into Accountancy and it has been a truly amazing experience from start to finish. I couldn’t recommend the course enough to anyone thinking of going back to college, whether that be a student fresh from school or heading back as a mature student, the tutors have an amazing ability to cater for the needs of all abilities."
