  • Kevin Patterson Hayes | Cavan Institute

Kevin from Carlanstown, Co Meath studied year 1 and year 2 of the Hairdressing course at Cavan Institute. "In the down turn in the economy, I found myself wanting to up-skill in the workplace, I had always had a keen interest in Hairdressing and decided that at 41 years of age, it was the time. Next for me was to find the right college and that was Cavan Institute. Cavan Institute was ideally located, very affordable and importantly, offered a worldwide recognised City and Guilds International Diploma that could be used anywhere. Throughout the course I had fantastic mentoring, continuous assessment of my improving skills and was able to participate in an overseas student exchange programme. Since finishing my studies I have kept full time employment in a job I love and I am in the process of opening a new business in the coming months. I would highly recommend Cavan Institute and their friendly staff and tutors to anyone with aspirations, of any age, to enhance their knowledge or skills." • Abigail Brennan | Cavan Institute

Abigail Brennan joined us in September 2021. She is from Longford and tells her story here. "In 2021, I was unsure of what career path to follow. After researching many courses, I decided on the Office Administration and Technology course at Cavan Institute. It has a range of both practical and theoretical modules, with good employment and progression opportunities. Travel to the college was convenient for me and the fees were low. The course has more than met my expectations and has been enjoyable, rewarding and confidence boosting. The teachers are all, without exception, enthusiastic, encouraging, helpful, supportive and positive. Work experience is a key element of the course, and we were required to find a ten-day placement. I had no experience of office work and was unsure of how to find a placement that would be beneficial, suitable and enjoyable for me. My work experience teacher gave me advice on job finding, CV preparation and interview skills as well as the contact details of local employers who were, at that time, offering placements to suitable candidates. This gave me the confidence to apply for and secure a part time receptionist’s job at the Cavan Crystal Hotel. This I have been able to do at weekends whilst I complete my course. A collaborative approach to learning is encouraged and, as a result, our class group were really friendly and sociable both online and on site. It was a very effective way to work and learn and it helped us all progress very well. There was a good mix of students with some who had just left school, mature students and both male and female in the class. It meant we mixed with people of different ages and backgrounds and nationalities. We forged great friendships and made time for tea breaks and laughter along the way. Under the guidance of our tutor, we became a connected and inclusive group. My advice is if you are unsure of what career path to follow the Office Administration and Technology course is a great place to start as the skills learned are useful no matter what area of work you eventually decide to enter." • Mandy Freehill | Cavan Institute

Mandy Freehill studied Office Administration and Technology at Cavan Institute. Here is Mandy's story: "I decided I wanted to leave the retail sector. I felt I needed a new challenge and a change in direction. I enjoyed working in an office environment prior to retail but knew that I would need to upskill. I applied for the Office Administration and Technology course at Cavan Institute. As a mature student, I can’t recommend Cavan Institute highly enough. One of the best decisions I made recently was returning to full time education. The staff and tutors were amazing in their support and encouragement on my journey back to education. I am delighted I took the plunge and went back to college. Work experience is a very useful part of the course and can be in a local business. I was lucky enough to take part in the Erasmus programme where I spent my two weeks work experience in Slovenia. I worked in a company which was involved in the development of local and regional projects. My job was to review documents and reports that were translated into English and check and correct grammar errors. I found it very beneficial as it was my first taste of “real office work” for a long time. I would strongly advise and encourage anyone, especially mature people or people who have been out of education for a while to go back and give it a go! There are many supports available to you in Cavan Institute and a dedicated team of staff and teachers on hand to guide and help you on your way. As a result of graduating from the Office Administration and Technology course, I am now working as a secretary at a local school." We wish you continued success Mandy.
