Lindsay Carolan from Nobber, Co. Meath attended Cavan Institute from 2014 to May 2016 and studied the Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation (formerly known as Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistant course). Joy Spendlove from Kilmacanogue, Co. Wicklow commenced the QQI Level 5 Occupational Therapy Studies course during 2019/20 with the objective of using her Level 5 Award to progress her studies in the Occupational Therapy area. After achieving her full award with Cavan Institute, Joy was offered a place on the Masters in Occupational Therapy programme at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh Joy really enjoyed her time at Cavan Institute and says that "throughout my time in Cavan Institute, I made so many new friends both in College and in my host family, where I stayed during the week. I found that the staff and tutors were always there for guidance and queries. I applied to all three Universities in Scotland and two in England and was fortunate enough to gain a place in all of them. "When I completed my leaving certificate in St Clares, Ballyjamesduff, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I got accepted to DIT for sports but I opted for sports in Cavan institute which I completed, but didn't continue the sports. Then in September 2013 I started my Hairdressing year 1. Each module was covered in great detail and gave me the love to stay at hairdressing, developing skills I never knew I had. Without the excellent teachers, with great ambition and passion, to help each student to obtain their highest ability, I wouldn't be the hairstylist I am now. During my advanced course I worked part time in a hairdressing salon which lead to full time employment. I felt I was ready to make the jump and open my own hairdressing salon in October 2018. The salon is situated on Main Street Cavan "LUXE the experience". I am always up-skilling with the best in the business and I will continue to bring the best to Cavan. Early Learning and Care with Special Needs Assisting QQI Level 5 Course Code CJ Major Award Code 5M21473 Apply Now About This Course The Early Learning Care with Special Needs Assisting course equips the student with the knowledge, experience and practical skills necessary to work in a range of childcare and early years services, promoting and supporting the holistic needs of children 0-6 years. This award also provides the student with the opportunity to progress into the Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care and into higher education and training. Students must complete 150 hours of professional practice placement in a minimum of two Tusla-approved settings: (1) working directly with children aged between 0- 2 years 8 months, and (2) working directly with children aged 2 years 8 months – 6 years. Students who are registered on the ELC programmes who undertake placements relating to children will require National Garda Vetting and Police Vetting if applicable. NB – It is important to note that the six mandatory programme modules are not accredited awards in their own right. "There was no doubt in my mind about choosing to enrol in Cavan Institute after seeing the successes my friends have reached in their careers by attending this college. It was the best decision I had ever made to attend here, not only because I got to expand my knowledge and earn a qualification in doing so, but also because I made friends for life who share similar interests as myself. I have my class tutors to thank as they were extremely supportive throughout the year and always offered a helping hand, even if I just needed a chat, or some guidance with an assignment. Every single module that this course delivered was extremely beneficial. I found that having work experience as a module was especially useful because I got hands-on experience in this field of work and will now feel confident seeking full-time employment once I complete my Level 6 in Early Childhood Care and Education next year. I am also very delighted to say that I managed to get a summer job in the creche I did my work experience in. If there was no work experience module, I would not have gotten this amazing opportunity. I know just how nerve-wrecking it can be having to sit a big exam at the end of the year, containing questions about everything you’ve had to take in from September until May. In that situation, a lot of us would crack under pressure and underperform, affecting our final grades. Luckily, Cavan Institute takes a different approach to assess their students, called continuous assessment. I found this method of assessment to be much more effective than any other form of assessment. Having guest speakers come in and talk to us students was very advantageous as it gave us a greater insight as to what childcare and special needs assisting entails. We also got to do a Patient Moving and Handling course, first aid course, and a Lámh course. These courses are very beneficial to us students and I’m incredibly grateful that the college, along with my class tutors, provided us with an opportunity to complete them. Michelle Dyland is originally from Dublin and moved to Cavan over 11 years ago. She was always interested in getting an accounting qualification so she decided to undertake the two year Accounting Technician (ATI) course in Cavan Institute. In May 2013 Michelle passed all her subjects with distinctions. Michelle started work almost immediately with the Radisson Blu Farnham Estate Hotel as a Payroll/Purchase Clerk. In January 2016 Michelle was promoted to Assistant Financial Controller and is really enjoying her new role.
